For all the enormously varying reports about Jack Wilson that whistled about the baseball world Thursday, my favorite line of the day came from one source who told me this on the phone: "Be sure of this: The Pirates are trying to trade him. Anybody who doubted that before shouldn't do that now."
Not from within the Pirates, obviously.
Some might look at the news that Wilson is willing to restructure his contract if traded to the Dodgers -- as is being reported on this site tonight -- as a sign that he is OK with leaving Pittsburgh. In truth, from what I gather, that is absolutely not the case. Rather, and this happens quite a bit in professional sports, the athlete hears his name in enough trade speculation, valid or not, and feels as if he has crossed that bridge already. He might even have felt it back with the final home game, where he got that standing ovation from the crowd thick with season-ticket holders.
Well now, add to the mountain of speculation the firm, hard evidence that is out there -- players are not routinely brought into trade talks to discuss restructuring millions of dollars in contracts -- and that feeling probably multiplies.
So, feeling already gone, the sentiment turns to what might be best next.
Linkage to the general coverage ...
The potential restructuring of Wilson's contract is part of a general update that includes, way down at the bottom, the news that John Van Benschoten has agreed to terms with the White Sox. The young man sent a text early yesterday in which he wanted it known that he "really liked Pittsburgh a lot," and I am confident he would not mind my sharing that with you.
And from other realms ...
Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press reports on the Tigers' interest.
Tim Brown of Yahoo! says the Dodgers' preference would be to get Rafael Furcal back.
Tony Jackson of the Los Angeles Daily News writes that the Pirates and Dodgers have not talked about Wilson "in months."
MLB.com ranks Andrew McCutchen the No. 12 prospect in the game, nifty video included. The top 10 still are left to be announced, and players who were drafted behind Pedro Alvarez are on this list, so that probably means he will crack the top 10.
Nobody anywhere tracks the Pirates' system more closely -- and fairly -- than Wilbur Miller, and he has added a page covering prospects from Latin America. Truly, the Pirates are making progress in this part of the world when Wilbur is lending them credibility.
