The Pirates have had two conversations with free-agent infielder Mark Loretta, agent Bob Garber confirmed this afternoon. A handful of other teams are in the mix, as well.
Loretta, 37, batted .280 with four home runs and 38 RBIs in 261 at-bats last season for Houston. He is a career .297 hitter over 14 seasons and is capable of playing any infield position, including shortstop.
The Astros have until midnight tonight to decide whether to offer Loretta arbitration, but that will not affect his free-agent status. It only affects whether the Astros get a compensatory draft pick because Loretta is a Type B free agent.
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Philadelphia Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers also are interested.
