MILWAUKEE -- It is official. Contract signed. Grievance done.
All over, except for playing baseball.
Updates will be placed here after the conference call, which will start around 6:30 your time. Could time some time after that to process.
UPDATE 6:05 p.m.: Tom Gorzelanny was placed on the 60-day disabled list to create space on the 40-man roster for Alvarez.
6:13 p.m.: Alvarez will head to the Florida Instructional League almost immediately after this.
7:04 p.m.: OK, very quick synopsis of the call, which also included Scott Boras. I asked Alvarez if he was thinking for himself through all this or being unduly influenced by his agent. "Throughout this whole process, I, myself, wanted a fair trial, a fair negotiation. I wanted everything to play itself out. I thought for myself and made decisions for myself." ... I asked what it would take to mend fences, not just with the Pirates but also the many people in Pittsburgh who are upset at how long this took. "I just want the fans of Pittsburgh to judge me as the professional player that I am now, to judge me on the player that I am. I will work my hardest to be the best player I can be, to be a leader on and off the field in the community. It's a big day for me and my family. When I was a little kid, me and my mom dreamed of this. And the fact that it's a reality now ... all I can say is, starting today, I will be the best player I can be. This is a hard, blue-collar community just like where I grew up, and my family instilled that work ethic in me. That's what's going to happen. I'll work my hardest and be the best I can be." ... Frank Coonelly called the contract Alvarez ended up with "comparable in value" to the original agreement. ... Boras disagreed, calling it "a favorable change for Pedro Alvarez ... much different than the one that was previously offered." ... Boras: "This process was really about a fair negotiation. It was one where the design and intent and objective of the draft rules were upheld." Coonelly and Boras agreed that this will put an end to unlateral extensions beyond the deadline. ... Neal Huntington said Hawaii cannot be ruled out for winter ball, but he said that adding Alvarez and removing another player from the Arizona or Hawaii rosters at this point for him would "not be fair" to those players.
7:18 p.m.: Oh, and this, too: He will be heading for Instructional League "sometime this weekend," Huntington said. Some logistics involved, he added.
9:25 p.m.: Here is a picture below, taken by the Pirates, of Alvarez meeting some children of season-ticket holders at a private event ...
