There is word early this morning that the Pirates will promote reliever Jesse Chavez from Class AAA Indianapolis in time for the game this afternoon.
Nothing yet on corresponding moves, but two will be necessary: One is the obvious, that a 25-man roster spot must be cleared. That could mean a brief demotion for Craig Hansen after his implosion last night. (Indianapolis is done playing next week on the day September recalls can be made.) Also, a 40-man roster spot must be cleared. That could be as simple as moving injured starter Phil Dumatrait from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day.
Chavez, who turned 25 last week, never has pitched in the majors. He was the pitcher obtained for Kip Wells at the 2006 trading deadline, and he has been a late-inning fixture at Indianapolis since then. This season, he has a 3.80 ERA in 51 appearances, with 70 strikeouts and 22 walks. He throws hard and, for those who have not seen him, has a fairly animated delivery.
