Jesse Chavez heading to Pittsburgh

By Dejan Kovacevic | 12:45 a.m. Wednesday

There is word early this morning that the Pirates will promote reliever Jesse Chavez from Class AAA Indianapolis in time for the game this afternoon.

Nothing yet on corresponding moves, but two will be necessary: One is the obvious, that a 25-man roster spot must be cleared. That could mean a brief demotion for Craig Hansen after his implosion last night. (Indianapolis is done playing next week on the day September recalls can be made.) Also, a 40-man roster spot must be cleared. That could be as simple as moving injured starter Phil Dumatrait from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day.

Chavez, who turned 25 last week, never has pitched in the majors. He was the pitcher obtained for Kip Wells at the 2006 trading deadline, and he has been a late-inning fixture at Indianapolis since then. This season, he has a 3.80 ERA in 51 appearances, with 70 strikeouts and 22 walks. He throws hard and, for those who have not seen him, has a fairly animated delivery.

As long as he can walk guys on 4 straight pitches with the bases loaded, he'll fit right in.

Throwing another log on the fire, or maybe some actual real help?

welcome jesse.

work quickly, change speeds, throw strikes.

throw inside. hit a few if need be. walk no one.

people can field who play beside and around.

hold them to less than 7 runs and we have a chance.

Make any point you wish on any subject, but keep it clean. This is and will remain a board that any family member will be able to navigate without worrying about crude language.

Oh oh. Somebody got busted...

Welcome to the 2008 second-half Bucs, Jesse. Mutiny is in the air. Better be ready to walk the plank.

i saw this kid pitch this past Friday night and he looked really sharp. He got through the 9th inning with 7 pitches. Now how that translates to the majors, only time will tell. But he threw hard, threw strikes, and looked real confident on the mound.

this guy needs to come in and throw hard and tight once in a while..think old time ron vallone..put some fear in someone at the plate--not the puss that most of the bucs pithcers throw
