MILWAUKEE -- No television for the Pirates tonight, so you'll have to listen to the radio to see how Tom Gorzelanny fares in his return to the major leagues. You'll recall that the left-hander was sent to Indianapolis July 5 after a dismal start here against the Brewers on July 4. Gorzelanny's struggles that day were reflected in his body language, which suggested a pitcher struggling to relocate the magic that led him to a 14-10 (3.88) season in 2007.
This season with the Pirates, Gorzelanny is 6-7 (6.57). In 87 2/3 innings, he's walked 61 -- among the many reasons he was sent to Indianapolis. In Class AAA, Gorzelanny was 3-1 (2.06) in seven starts and walked only four in 35 innings.
"He did what we envisioned him going down and doing,'' Pirate manager John Russell said. "We wanted him to have cleaner innings without having the 30-plus pitches [innings]. He did that. He accomplished what we wanted him to do. When he first went out, obviously he wasn't too happy, but he needed to get back on track. He did that.''
We shall see if all the good Gorzelanny did with Indiananpolis translates at the big league level against one of the better teams in the major leagues. The Brewers, still in the chase for the National League Central championship, hold a 2 1/2-game lead over St. Louis for the NL wild-card spot.
The Brewers also have dominated the Pirates at Miller Park, having won 10 straight games and rolling up a 76-28 aggregate score.
Stay tuned for medical updates on Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit later today, plus the roster moves that will be made. Closer Matt Capps and Gorzelanny must be officially placed back on the 25-man roster. Right-hander Romulo Sanchez was sent to Indianapolis after Friday night's game to make room for one of them. Somebody else will have to be moved this afternoon.
UPDATE: 5:15 p.m. The Pirates sent right-handed reliever T.J. Beam to Indianapolis to make roster room for Gorzelanny. Both Beam and Sanchez will return when rosters expand in just over a week. . .McLouth "has turned the corner'' with his stomach virus, Russell said. McLouth was in the clubhouse today wearing street clothes and was eating. "That's a good sign,'' Russell said. . .Doumit will not start tonight but can pinch-hit. Dehydration caused him to leave Friday night's game in the seventh inning. He'll return to the lineup Sunday. . .Jason Davis will pitch in relief the rest of the season. . .Zach Duke will start Wednesday against the Cubs. . .Former Pirate general manager Ted Simmons, the Brewers' bench coach, rides a motorcycle to the ballpark. Saw him pull in today and park his bike next to third base coach Dave Sveum's bike. Made me wonder if the Brewers are the only team in baseball that has two of its coaches ride bikes to the ballpark. "Could be,'' Simmons said.
