Pirates seal Alvarez deal at 11:59 p.m.

By Dejan Kovacevic | 2:33 a.m. Saturday

It ticked to the final seconds, but the Pirates signed first-round draft pick Pedro Alvarez before Major League Baseball's deadline at midnight last night -- at 11:59 p.m. -- and did so with the largest bonus in franchise history: $6 million, plus the remainder of his college tuition.

"We are good at deadlines," general manager Neal Huntington deadpanned a half-hour later.

That was a reference to the three-team Jason Bay trade last month, also executed a minute before deadline.

It is wholly possible that this transaction, which brings Vanderbilt University's slugging third baseman widely regarded as the best player in the draft, will make that one look humble by comparison.

Start with the cost ...

Alvarez's bonus, part of a minor league contract, far exceeded the $4 million the Pirates paid to pitcher Bryan Bullington, No. 1 overall in 2002. More striking, it was part of total spending on this 32-player draft class that approached $10 million, a figure made possible when owner Bob Nutting early last month authorized a significant increase. That total included $8,166,000 on players in the top 10 rounds and an additional $900,000 yesterday to lure the 20th-round pick, pitcher Quinton Miller.

That not only was a record for the Pirates, but also was roughly $2 million more than any major league team spent on the draft last season. The high last season was the New York Yankees' $8,035,500.

And yet, a case could be made that the Pirates did not end up being forced to give up all that they might have: Alvarez, the No. 2 overall pick, wound up with the minor league contract the team preferred and a bonus that ranked third overall. The San Francisco Giants last night signed catcher Buster Posey, the No. 5 pick, to a $6.2 million upfront bonus and minor league contract. The Kansas City Royals signed first baseman Eric Hosmer, the No. 3 pick and another Boras client, to identical terms as Alvarez. A month ago, the Tampa Bay Rays signed shortstop Tim Beckham to a $6.15 million backloaded bonus.

Coonelly, who in his previous job with MLB advised teams how to stay within slotted recommendations for bonuses, had pledged not to "grossly exceed" the market in signing Alvarez. They ended up greatly exceeding slot, which was $3.5 million, but not the market of the top five.

This much already is known about how the deal was unfurled: Alvarez's agent, Scott Boras, followed his recent pattern of taking negotiations to the closing minutes before ultimately calling Huntington -- the team's lone voice in the talks -- to accept. The Pirates, according to one person intimately familiar with those talks, never budged off their number, and Boras' call came at 11:55 to accept.

It was not immediately clear if Boras advised Alvarez to accept or if he was overruled by Alvarez and his family, who live in the Washington Heights section of New York with Alvarez's father, Pedro Sr., driving a taxi to support them.

But it might have been noteworthy that Huntington and team president Frank Coonelly each acknowledged the family in statements issued early this morning ...

"Pedro is a quality young man who comes from a very strong family," Huntington said. "We appreciate their trust in the Pirates organization."

"We greatly appreciate the faith Pedro and his family have placed in the Pirates organization," Coonelly said.

Before the draft, Boras, encouraged by the Pirates' new management, allowed them two lengthy meetings with Alvarez, with Huntington and scouting director Greg Smith participating in both. Those are visits Boras might not have allowed previous management, and it represented a sign that he viewed the Pirates as serious suitors.

Boras also at the time made the Pirates aware of Alvarez's price, which he compared to that of current Los Angeles Angels first baseman Mark Teixeira, whose $9.5 million bonus from the Texas Rangers in 2001 set a bar still unmatched by a position player.

The Pirates apparently never blinked, and they were crediting Nutting for that early this morning.

On draft day, Nutting was in the room when Huntington, Smith and the rest of the staff selected Alvarez and, according to one source, let them know they would have his support. And he was in constant touch by phone last night, too, for the staredown with Boras.

"Bob Nutting has made a commitment to provide the club with the tools and resources necessary to return the Pirates to the greatness that this organization has achieved so often in its rich history," Coonelly said. "He has further demonstrated that commitment by his active involvement throughout this process and by providing us with the significant dollars necessary to sign Pedro Alvarez. We had to reach to sign Pedro and Bob was fully supportive of our decision."

The whole scene was a far cry from last year, when former general manager Dave Littlefield and his scouts bypassed a Boras client - Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters - and drafted reliever Danny Moskos fourth overall, drawing outrage from the public. The bulk of that was aimed at Nutting, but multiple accounts since then support the notion that it was a baseball decision rather than a financial one, despite what now has become apparent is a great gap between the two prospects in terms of talent.

If the Pirates had not signed Alvarez, they would have received a compensatory pick in the draft next year, No. 3 overall, in addition to their regular first-round pick. Alvarez would return to Vanderbilt for his senior year, then re-enter the draft pool.

Next, in absorbing the scope of the transaction, look at the player ...

Alvarez, 21, established himself as an exceptional left-handed power hitter in three years at Vanderbilt, batting .349 with 49 home runs. This season, in which he lost six weeks to a broken hamate bone in his right hand, his average dipped to .317 with nine home runs and 30 RBIs in 40 games, but Baseball America still ranked him its No. 1 draft prospect.

Initial projections were that Alvarez could play in the majors as soon as late 2009, had he signed sooner and had some seasoning in the minors this summer. But he surely will remain on a fast track, likely beginning with time in the Arizona Fall League after some conditioning in Bradenton, Fla.

Regardless of the path, he instantly becomes the Pirates' top prospect, passing outfielders Andrew McCutchen and Jose Tabata, possibly their best prospect since Aramis Ramirez.

"Pedro Alvarez is an accomplished college hitter with the potential to be a middle of the order bat at the major league level for us," Huntington said. "Pedro is a high-end talent. We are excited to add him to our system and about the potential impact he can have."

On another draft front, the Pirates decided not to sign second-round pitcher Tanner Scheppers, partly because he never convinced management he was fully healthy after missing two months of Fresno State University's junior season to a torn labrum, partly because he sought a bonus in line with a top-10 pick.

As it was, his injury caused him to plummet to No. 48, where the Pirates took a gamble.

"It became clear that Tanner's financial expectations were not in line with the risks presented by Tanner's current status as a pitcher in the early stages of a rehabilitation program," Huntington said. "Unfortunately, Tanner's rehabilitation program timeline changed dramatically from what his representative presented to us prior to the draft. Had Tanner been able to demonstrate that he was fully recovered, we are confident that we could have found common ground."

Scheppers was supposed to pitch for management at the beginning of this month, but it was delayed until Tuesday, and that session was diluted further by less-than-peak velocity and an inability to throw breaking balls.

The slot at No. 48 is $809,000, and the slot for No. 10 was $2.07 million.

The gamble was minimal: For not signing Scheppers, the Pirates' compensatory pick will be the third of the second round, something Huntington mentioned as a factor on the day Scheppers was drafted.

Scheppers can return to Fresno State.

Miller, the 20th-round pick whose $900,000 bonus was the highest for any player taken beyond the 10th round, thought he would be going to college, too.

But the Pirates, upon accepting that Scheppers was not going to lower his price, began at mid-week making strong overtures to bring two high school picks into the professional ranks: One was sixth-round outfielder Robbie Grossman, who signed for $1 million Thursday despite a letter of intent with the University of Texas, and the other was Miller, who had committed to the University of North Carolina.

In fact, as Miller told the Web site InsideCarolina.com, he was preparing to move from his home in Medford, N.J., to the Tar Heels' campus when the Pirates called Thursday.

"Talks had been dead for a couple of weeks," Miller said. "They called, and things picked up from there out of nowhere. They said that they had the money. It was one of the hardest decisions I've had to make, but they gave me an offer I couldn't turn down."

Miller, an 18-year-old right-hander, was ranked the No. 1 prospect in New Jersey by Baseball America - No. 158 overall - by going 6-3 with a 2.13 ERA, 85 strikeouts and 14 walks in 52 2/3 innings as a senior at Shawnee High School.

"Based on potential alone, Quinton was projected to be an early-round selection in the draft but was still available due to his commitment to North Carolina," Huntington said. "We're thrilled to have him join our organization."

Pirates top 5 prospects got pretty interesting in the last few weeks:

1.  Pedro Alvarez  3B

2.  Andrew McCutchen CF

3.  Jose Tabata  RF

4.  Bryan Morris  SP

5.  Brad Lincoln  SP

Compare that to BAs preseason top 5:

1.  McCutchen

2.  Neil Walker  3B

3.  Steve Pearce  1B

4.  Brad Lincoln  SP

5.  Daniel Moskos SP

Definately a significant upgrade.

This could turn out to be a great day for Pirates baseball. It is nice to know that Bob Nutting stepped up when he had to. The future looks much brighter than it did a few weeks ago.

Thanks, DK, for all the great work you have done, both this week and during the trading deadline.

Dejan, you're a stud! :) Thanks for all of your hard work tonight and overall on this blog.

As requested, Colin Dunlap's story about the Pirates close loss to the Mets 2-1, despite getting 9 hits and a great performance by newcomer Jason Davis.

www.post-gazette.com/.../904859-63.stm

Colin also talks about the vast improvement of Sean Burnett as a relief pitcher, Steve Pearce's lack of power at the major league level and the hopefully soon return of Matt Capps in Pirates Notebook. Also the latest from the farm system.......

www.post-gazette.com/.../904858-63.stm

Not sure if this has been reported locally yet, but at least one local kid did well in this year's draft. Pete Hissey out of Uniontown, who was drafted in the 4th round by the Boston Red Sox gets a $1 million bonus.

Well there's something at least.

15 years people! 15 years and finally we have something to smile about! It has been a long time coming, but thanks to Neal and Frank there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I guess Nutting deserves some thanks too, although that is very tough for me to do. I know our record is at a season low this morning, but what a great season it has been. What an impact this new brass has had. They preached and preached accountability and they have certainly practiced what they have preached on the field and now off the field. Bravo Bucco Brass!!! Management really did handle this one well!  The $6 million is irrelevant -- it could have been 8 or 10 and it wouldn't have mattered.  What's important is that (1) they didn't tie their hands by giving out a major league contract, & (2) per the labor agreement, after the $6 million payment, they don't have to invest any additional (significant) money in him for many years to come.  Once again, Great Job!

And the sign, in my view, that this is not the Front Office it was 12 months ago...

..."[T]his 32-player draft class that approached $10 million, a figure made possible when owner Bob Nutting early last month authorized a significant increase. That total included $8,166,000 on players in the top 10 rounds and an additional $900,000 yesterday to lure the 20th-round pick, pitcher Quinton Miller.

That not only was a record for the Pirates, but it was roughly $2 million more than any major league team spent on the draft last season. The high last season was the New York Yankees' $7.6 million."

When was the last time we led baseball in anything other than losses?  Yesterday truly confirmed - Dominican baseball academies aside - that the Pirates are committed (read: financially, not just talk) to building this team right.  I guess this answers all those who questioned whether Frank Coonelly could reconcile his current and past job roles.  Nice job, Frank.  Nice job, Neal.  This feels good.

And thanks to you too Dejan.

I am very happy that the Pirates have signed so many promising players and it looks as though Mr. Nutting is pushing closed the door to all of those years of losing. But I can't help feeling that he could have made that money available earlier, when Kevin McClatchy was the administrative face of the team.

I accept without reservation that David Littlefield made some horrible decisions, and apparently signing Mosko instead of Wieters was his decision and not Mr. Nutting's. But I wonder, stung with having to move Aramis Ramirez for -- well, who the heck remembers anymore -- if DL didn't look to the dollars first and the talent second.

But now that Mr. Nutting has jettisoned Mr. McClatchy and come out of the darkness to take credit for what we all hope is the team's resurgence, the Bucs are spending money and bringing talent into the organization -- money that could have been spent a long time ago. It's pretty easy to ride to the rescue when you're the only one allowed to ride the horse.

from lets go bucs

"Where will Alverez play this season or will he have to wait until next season?"

DK says that he will most likely begin in the Arizona fall league after some initial conditioning in Bradenton.

I still say it's a shame that this kid has missed an entire year of his baseball career over this signing game.  For those of you who are still deluding yourselves that Boras was just an "advisor," and that the waiting game came from "the community" and the family, please note that (a) Alvarez followed the exact same tactics/patterns as Boras's for real clients, and (b) the last minute call to Huntington came from Boras, not Daddy Alvarez.

Dear Mr. Huntington,

Congratulations on your recent success of restocking the PBC with trades and draft signings. Pedro Alvarez is going provide much needed help to, was what was before you arrived, a completely barren minor league system. You had to pay todays going rate for him but less than what the worm (Scott Boras) had wanted. Also, getting the two young bucks to sign after it became apparent that Tanner Scheppers wasn't going to sign was a big coup. I look forward to breaking the streak in '10, competing for the title in '11 and winning it all in '12. It's going to be fun sitting in my seat again without having to endure so many heartbrakes.

Sincerely,

13H6

Dear Mr. Boras,

Please take your $600k commission into your wormhole and use it to help feed some of the other bottom feeders. You've strong armed many GM's in the past but NH wasn't having any of it. I'm sure he can't wait to whup your but again in the future.

SIncerely,

A lifelong Pirate Fan

Dear Mr. Micco,

Your best and probably hardest working writer, Dejan Kovacevic, deserves many kudos (and maybe a raise too) for his work covering all aspects of Our Buccos, especially with his most recent work with the trades and draft signings. Please do not ever re-assign him back to the Pens, as a revolt would ensue the likes of which you would make the Civil War seem like a lovers spat. Lastly, when he leaves the PG in late '11 to become the PBC head of PR, shake his hand and wish him well.

SIncerely,

Couple of things.

I guess the first is to thank Dejan for all his hard work the last few weeks, and actually, all season. He's definitely put in a LOT more time that is visible to the readers than most beat writers. And us hardcore fans appreciate it. One just has to look at this blog to see that. And that his scanners won't have to scan for pitchforks for a while.

This may already be in the works for tonight, I don't know. If the Pirates are smart, and it appears they are...there will be a special appearance at the game tonight. It's the last night of Skyblast, a sellout. There is no more perfect time to introduce Pedro to the Pirate fans, and vice versa. And hopefully, the fans at the game realize what a special occasion this is, and give him the proper welcome.

The most significant part of this story to me is contained in the list provided by Sandlot Wizard at the top of the comments.  It's more than a shuffling of names, and that doesn't even include Grossman and Miller. A far, far cry from the Littlefield-McClatchey years.  It's amazing what can happen when an owner has the resources to build a franchise instead of just keeping it from going under.  A farm system?  A presence in the DR?  Drafting players because you think they're good?  Don't anyone wake me from this fabulous dream...

Did anybody else notice that Nyjer stole 5 bases & McCutcheon added a couple? Seven steals between two people - I cannot remember that happening with the bucs in quite some time....I have to wonder, was Mackey Sasser behind the dish for Durham - I mean, I know those two are pretty quick, but, it sounded like they stole those bases unimpeded. Either the catcher had no arms & simply kicked the ball back to the pitcher or the pitcher's leg kick was a foot higher than juan marchial.

bucs brass' job is to reel 'em in. boras' job is to do whatever he can to get his clients cash. both succeeded. we all win on the pirate ship looking forward to having a 2010 team to contend for years.

nice to see the leadership identify problems and take the steps to change. I'll still have the candles lit, but the depth chart is getting deeper, and the fences seem shorter.

dejan: great reporting

mr nutting: nice to see brass with brass [you know]

mr huntington: great stare down with the devil

boras: you are still ugly, dude.

@Dejan: Bryan Bullington was the #1 pick in 2002, not 2001.

@Jose Lind's Pants: Not only all that, but Nate McLouth has hit 22 home runs; Ryan Doumit is the regular catcher while Paulino's at AAA Indy, and a guy we traded Xavier Nady for almost threw a perfect game against Randy Johnson and the D-Backs. It'd be a hell of a time to come out of a coma...

Okay BN ponied up now, but who held the purse stings?  When the  purse was opened a bit, BAD decisions were made.

So by what has been reported and what may never be fully known is; was it to erase past depts that we were so bad for so long?  was it to make some money before actually putting some back into the Pirates?

We are all happy now and will never get the full story of past mistakes and or reasons.

The future now looks bright for our buccos so let's all let it go and see what the future brings  (World Series anyone?)

Just remember trades must and will be made with some of the people we signed in the future, look back at the past WS and see who we have traded to get there.  I just hope they make the right decisions and keep the most popular and productive players for us to cheer for in the longest terms possible.

Indeed a great day for the burgh!

Kudos to BN, FC and NH for going where no Pirate management team has gone before. To paraphrase the late Bob Johnson: it's a great day for Pirate baseball.

I'd like to add my thanks to the REAL DK (Dejan, not The Dark Knight) for the hard work and quality effort during not only the long haul but especially the recent trade deadline and draft all-nighters. Here is a triple Hap Cap, Dejan, one each for you and the two youngest Kovacevic's who have had to share their dad with us a lot of late.

Important thing to remember.  Wether Boras is an agent or advisor, he works for the Alvarez family.  They always could have made the call before yesterday.  They chose to see if NH would blink, just like Boras.  Pedro has as big a hand in his wasted year as Boras, and probably moreso, since Boras represents him.

Your welcome for the Cap Haps. Sorry to rain on your parade about none for PA. I'm trying to keep them to an exclusive status for those among the PBC and bloggers who have seniority. Of course, if I were to be politically incorrect, I could view Pedro has having "SEN~ORITY." <groan>

You asked about Pedro's father and his taxi. (By the way, it's not a NYC yellow cab, it's jitney, remember?) I was wondering something similar, as in whether he'd take one last ride in it around town blasting the horn for all to hear. Who could blame him? And (again I'm being politically incorrect) do you suppose it's one of those "La cucaracha" horns?

A major wins for Pirates signing Alveraz.  I think it is more of win for us fans.  Could there possilby be some light at the long end of the tunnel?  Could there actually be a dawn in the Pirates night?

I don't know if I am going to be able to handle this, the Pirates with a bright outlook.  A legit bright outlook that is, not the blow smoke Dave Littlefield kind.

I know they didn't win last night, but raise the Jolly Roger anyway, a good night to be a Buccos fan.

"I am concerned that Rocco was "in the know " regarding the Alvarez signing hours before you were. "

Reading the comments on previous posts, Rocco was reporting Alvarez signed a major league deal for $8.5M to $9M, and Scheppers signed.  So out of four data points (Alvarez signing, Scheppers signing, amount of Alvarez's bonus, major vs. minor league deal for Alvarez), he got one right.

You'd do better flipping a coin.  It sounds to me like DK did far better -- reporting nothing until it was confirmed, and then getting all the facts nailed.

I have to echo all the comments about both the Pirates' approach to this signing season and DK's coverage of it.  The Pirates setting their value on Alvarez and basically telling Boras to take it or leave it - but at a reasonable value, not a lowball offer that would cause Alvarez to either walk or accept and feel resentment for his entire career; taking a pass on Scheppers because they felt the risk outweighed the upside at the amount it would take to sign him; investing $10M on signing their draft choices.  These are signs of management and ownership making a commitment to build the organization from the ground up, as opposed to throwing A-grade money at C-grade free agents.

Up until now it seemed to me that the PBC was engaged in a relentless pursuit of mediocrity -- the approach was, "let's grab a couple of half-decent free agents and see if we can break .500 for a year or two".  Now, it seems that they're trying to build for the long term.

And DK's coverage has been simply excellent.

DK, just wanted to say, TREMENDOUS job last night and early this morning, really, thanks for updates all night, this blog is the best thing that's happened to hardcore Pirates fans in years (although hopefully signing Alvarez quickly becomes the best thing).

And since you did all the hard work for us, here's my due diligence for links:

Not to infringe on DK's territory, but here's a link to Baseball America (the premier scouting site) blog about last night's deadline around MLB.  If you are interested in the other prospects its worth a look

www.baseballamerica.com/.../draft

There is an interesting quote in this Sporting News article from Scott Boras who sounds very irritated by the goings on last night and by the deadline in general.  I would have loved to have heard the tone of his voice at 11:58 judging by this quote.  Our local ball club takes up a good portion of the story

www.sportingnews.com/.../viewtopic.php

Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't throw in a link to the fine folks at Mondesi's House for their usual tongue in cheek work...

mondesishouse.blogspot.com/.../wow-wow-we-waa.html

Last Link: Lost in the shuffle has been that we also signed the promising Quinton Miller, who most people know absolutely ZERO about, so here's a link to an old story from Scouts Inc.  It is from January, but is the closest thing I have found to an in-depth report on Miller that doesn't require a subscription.  Enjoy

northcarolina.scout.com/.../724670.html

Also, I don't know that they will put it up on their website or not as a podcast, but ESPN 1250 had Keith Law on earlier this morning talking about the Pirates, I will keep checking to see if it pops up anytime, it was interesting to hear his take.  (He wasn't impressed by Grossman or Miller but at least acknowledged the Pirates were now a legitimate organization.  He also talked about the trades, which he seemed to like a lot.)

Whew, DK this is harder then it looks.

Great that the Bucs signed a player that other teams think can be a great player.  Lets hope he develops into one.  Been a long time since they drafted regular player who made an impact in the majors (Kendal in 1992), though a couple in the minors still have chance (Walker and McCutchen).

I just read Boras' remarks. Give me a break! He spins things to make it SOUND LIKE no one gives event their first offer until the last hours. He does not say that precisely, just gives that impression. Can you say, "disingenuous?" As for a lack of negotiating, are we supposed to feel sorry for some prospect picking up hundreds of thousands up to millions who have never laced up cleats in a MLB setting? Again, give me a break.

For Grandpagreg : Negrych is a pretty good hitter, but his defense and foot speed are going to be a big obstacle to playing above AAA. The only true prospect I have seen at AA  has been Shelby Ford, though the Curve have been on the road since Tabata arrived. Earlier in the season,Luis Cruz showed signs of having ML talent,as did Jason Delaney, both having since moved to Indy of course. For all the rest of you ,think of these past errors : not pulling the trigger on the deal (s) for Ryan Howard in '04 or '05,or the deal last season for Jair Jurrjens ! Of course the final blow was not drafting and signing Matt Wieters.Put all of these together with yesterday's events, and what would you have in Pitts ?

G-Man, he actually DOES say it, not just imply it:

"Teams don't even make offers until hours before the deadline and in many cases minutes before the deadline," said Scott Boras, who advised Alvarez and Hosmer. "This deadline creates a major administrative problems and it completely, for most draft picks, removes almost in its entirety the negotiation process."

I understand what you're saying and I don't disagree. What I was getting at is the carefully chosen words like "teams," "hours," and "minutes" which can be purposefully vague and misleading. Guys like Boras are just like ambulance chasing lawyers who twist words. If you pinned him on it in a court of law. he might have to admit there were only two teams ever in history, and their offers came hundreds of hours or tens of thousands of minutes before the deadline. But you and I are not disagreeing here. I'm just taking an extra shot at Boras. I think people who manipulate words are even worse than bald face liars. Some folks call them "elected officials" or politicians. :)

Okay, here's my first observation:

Old regime:  We pass on Alvarez, draft Scheppers, sign him to an unholy bonus despite his injury.

New regime:  Get's it right on both counts.  We get Alvarez and we pass (somewhat reluctantly) on a talented, but injured player.

Is this a broken-clock moment (broken clocks are right twice a day) or are we finally onto something here?  Time alone will tell (pun completely unintentional)
