Draft update: So, what about Alvarez?

By Dejan Kovacevic | 5:13 p.m. Friday

The Pirates and Pedro Alvarez continue to have an open line of communication, at least between Neal Huntington and Scott Boras, but there is no indication -- still -- that it will be used until much later tonight.

Boras' method is to wait until close to the final minute, and a glance around at several of his remaining unsigned clients confirms that will not change this year.

There is some thought that he is waiting for other shoes to drop -- he has Eric Hosmer, the No. 3 guy, and Buster Posey is the No. 5 guy -- but a call I got from San Francisco about two hours ago supports the notion that Posey probably will not end up in Alvarez's pay scale, in terms of offers. Seems unlikely with Hosmer, too, given that Kansas City went through this game with Boras last year with No. 2 overall pick Mike Moustakas and got Moustakas to blink -- $4 million bonus, just 25 percent above slot -- at 11:58 p.m. Why would the Royals change tactics now?

Where is Alvarez?

Still searching. The family source quoted in this morning's article as saying the family was out of New York and out of reach reiterated that late last night. As of mid-afternoon today, there also was no indication that Alvarez was anywhere near PNC Park or Pittsburgh, which would appear -- though not definitively -- to rule out a pre-signing physical.

That might not kill a major league contract, surprisingly. The Pirates do want the physical, but they are amenable to a major league contract. It might even provide a way for the team to get more creative with the terms, as the backloading of bonuses is highly limited except for players deemed to be two-sport athletes. (Don't ask.) Alvarez is not in that category.

Anyway, if forced to take all of my conversations, emails, texts and whatever else, and pile all of them into one big gut feeling, here it is: The Pirates have an offer on the table. They consider it quite fair. Boras wants Mark Teixeira money, meaning something in the range of $10 million. The Pirates are not going to do that, plain and simple. No chance. No circumstance. They have the money, of course. But they have no wish to spend it that way. They sound as if they would be flexible, in some form, off what is currently on the table, but that might not equate to all-out compromise. As I said, no chance, no circumstance of getting near eight figures.

Finally, this: One person I know well in the business -- not involved in these talks, but first-hand knowledgeable of these things -- texted me today to suggest that he feels Alvarez will sign because it is the right thing to do for his family. Never mind the Pirates, the agent, the slot, the image or anything else. He and his family turned down $700,000 from Boston three years ago and took plenty of guff over of it from friends and neighbors in a tight community. This figure will dwarf that one many times over.

UPDATE 7:35 p.m.: Ten of the 30 first-round picks remain unsigned, including Alvarez, Hosmer at No. 3, Posey at No. 5 and Yonder Alonso at Cincinnati's No. 6 spot. The Reds have made public that Alonso has seen his final offer.

@Buc Fever:

I think you are confusing the round a guy is drafted with his talent level.  Grossman, our sixth round pick who got a $1 million bonus, and Miller, our 20th round pick who got $900K, are definitely much more talented than their round would suggest.  Grossman signed a letter of intent with Texas and Miller with UNC so most teams thought they couldn't be signed.

As far as I can tell these two players have received higher bonuses than any other player taken after the fifth round in the whole draft.  Grossman was considered by many to be a top two round talent.  I'm not suggesting we not sign our top two picks, but Pirate fans should be ecstatic that they got these two in the fold.  A couple more to go.  This is a huge commitment by the organization.

All I know is here's a guy in a really nice camper who wants to sign our band. So, i'm signing, you're signing, we're all signing.     ~That Thing You Do!

Quick thoughts:

Alvarez's father has driven a cab for a long time - there is no reason he couldn't do it for 1 more year.

Boras is asking for the moon.  That's not surprising - it's his job.

Alvarez surely has an idea what he will sign for, but it would be against his interest to sign before finding out of the Pirates will throw him the Texiera type deal when the pressure is on.

Go Bucs.

Does the guy always tuck his ears inside his cap?

@Jose Linds Pants - Tremendous!!  "I'm a little hesitant to sign anything that has to do with my music."

In the simplest terms, doesn't this whole NH-Boras staredown have the feel of the 2 kids in the backseat driving through the Fort Pitt Tunnels holding their breath.  It's a race, yes, but everyone knows the end result anyways.

He's signing, and NH and FC are to be applauded for their ability to not blink (at least not too much).

I agree with Dejan that I think Alvarez will sign tonight no matter what Boras tells him.  If you read that long piece by Colin Dunlap, you would get a great sense of his family and his neighborhood, and upon reading that (and I heard Dunlap himself echo this sentiment on the radio a few days later) I realized that this kid will almost certainly sign in the end for his family, regardless of what his crazy, sleazy agent says.

Alvarez needs to remember that this is NOT the last check he'll ever get with his name on it. If he performs to expectations, the kid will be wealthy beyond his family's wildest dreams as a major league baseball player in the future.

Don't know that Alvarez will sign--remember, Boras held JD Drew out for another year instead of letting him sign with Philly.  I think he'll sign in the end--in truth, he'd be foolish not to.  As I think Dejan wrote recently, the sooner he starts playing, the sooner he becomes a free agent, and THAT'S where the huge money becomes available, if he's as advertised.  If he's a bust, he'll still have a nice wad of cash to put in the bank tomorrow.  I hope he signs, for everybody's sake.

So far fans should be satisfied with the attitude of the front office in signing these kids. Their trades and now commitments to drafted players shows a good effort for our program. Alvarez is the icing on the cake. I think we need this one to excite everyone. Still years away but finally hope.

This could well be TA Day-- Turn Around Day for the francise.

@ PIano Legs -

Drew was the exception rather than the rule...

That being said, I have every confidence this deal will get done.

Any chance a deal is done and they're waiting until post-game to announce it? Sure is generating a lot of buzz during a period that is normally all Steelers all the time.

@cocktailsfor2

You're right about Drew.  But the possibility is still there.  That said, I agree with you--I think it will get done.  I just have this lingering doubt in the back of my mind because of Drew and because it's the Bucs (albeit, no longer Littlefield).

Admiral Bucco wrote re: Draft update: So, what about Alvarez?

Ultimately, the decision to sign comes down to Alvarez. It is Pedro Alvarez's name that gets signed on the dotted line, not Boras's name. Boras is an advisor and in the recent past clients have took what the team has offered, not what Boras has advised (Moustakas, KC '07). Having survived an injury riddled college career to date to become the second selection in the draft, one would think the payout is too tempting compared to the risks of one more season at Vanderbilt.

JimmyO wrote re: Draft update: So, what about Alvarez?

Everyone has to realize is the agent works for the player (Pedro Alvarez), unless Boras wants to pay the player himself and lose his commission he'll sign.

I just hope the Pirates stand firm and don't cave in to Boras.

I still think the Pirates should of offered Jason Bay a contract extension before he was traded.  In all sports you advertise the stars (Bryant, James etc. basketball etc.)  The Pirates don't have no one.

Over/Under (or should I say earlier/later) on the time that Alvarez signs.........11:50.

I vote over...err...later.

In 2 years we actually might have some decent talent at all levels in the minors and 3-4 years from now actually have a decent young team. There seems to be a plan and it is being followed....what a concept. Now figure out how to get a couple more young potential studs for Jack Wilson and let's do it! How nice would Jair Jurgens

dtodd,

I'm not confusing rounds with ability. I agree that it is fantastic that the Pirates are signing these guys! My point just remains that, while it's great to get the 48th ranked prospect and the 158th ranked prospect, it won't mean much if you let the #1 ranked prospect get away. As I've said, if we sign Alvarez, this will look to be the Pirates strongest drafts in decades. (Although, that's purely on paper. Nobody knows what these high school kids will develop into, that's why they're more of a risk!) It looks like an impressive draft...now LET'S JUST GET ALVAREZ!

For the record, I think he's going to sign for what the Pirates offer for the good of his family. Let's hope thats true!

With all the above-slot money now being paid out by the PBC, has FC made a gentlemen's agreement with his former employer (MLB) to essentially "look the other way" as he tries to resurrect a team that has been in the doldrums for 16 years?

My first post DK, and let me say you've done an excellent job with the blog!

I think Alvarez will sign, because I really don't think that he's going to let his family go another year when there's this much money on the table.

One thing that bothers me about the draft is the "advisor" staus of these agents. It's not like after the draftee signs he's going to turn around and go with a different guy as his agent. The NCAA should make the baseball players declare for the draft just like they do for the football players. This would eliminate the leverage they have in being able to back to school, and might help bring down some of the ridiculous signing bonuses that are being asked for.

Alverz will sign because he will risk more by not signing.  The only question is for how much.

diehard wrote re: Draft update: So, what about Alvarez?

Alex Rodriguez offers Yonder Alonso a place to live if he "chooses" not to sign with the Reds and plays independent ball in New Jersey instead.  Boras is A Rod agent, but not Alonso's.  This would be called TAMPERING.  A Rod, Boras, and the Yankees should all be fined and face severe discipline from MLB (for whatever that's worth).

diehard wrote re: Draft update: So, what about Alvarez?

Also, Boras basically seem to have Alvarez in hiding.  How is he supposed to sign a contract?  Are the Pirates getting a chance to talk to Alvarez or only Boras?  Does Pedro even know how much money he's been offerred, or does Boras keep that secret?

60FT6 wrote re: Draft update: So, what about Alvarez?

It wouldn't surprise me to hear that Boras is telling Alveraz a lower number (being offered) until at the last minute he "gets" the club to offer more money. "See, my startegy worked, you didn't spend 4 months sitting around for nothing when you could have been already working your way towards the big leagues".

Rocco Demaro on WPGB Pirates postgame show said his source tells him the deal is done, and that his source has been right all year long.  Very interesting...
