HOUSTON -- It might take a little extra work from baseball operations' genetics staff, but there clearly is a solution for all that ails the Pirates' rotation.
Paul Maholm is good. And his teammates sounded after his latest fine effort last night as if they are getting tired of playing behind starting pitchers not named Paul Maholm. Check the Ryan Doumit audio file on that page to get a good feel.
Once again, your club has been stripped of all its haps, this time by one of my favorite people in the business: Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle. We need to create new rules about using the word "hapless:" 1. If the team you cover is either tied or behind the "hapless" team in the overall standings, that is worth one hap for the Pirates. 2. If the team you cover is outscored, 17-5, in the first two games of a series, that is worth two haps for the Pirates. 3. Two bonus haps if the Pirates win one of those games with a starter whose last W came four years ago.
The Astros lose all grip of reality on the day they fall into a last-place tie with your four-hap Pirates.
Google turns up 1,200 references to "hapless Pirates."
Danny Moskos slams into the standard first-full-year-on-buses wall.
Bob Smizik in one corner, Dave Littlefield and all his draft picks in the other.
It might not be long before Jason Davis' name comes up in rotation talk. I would point out that he would have to be added to the full 40-man roster, except that it is becoming abundantly clear how little of an issue that is.
