Coonelly 'frustrated' by talks with Alvarez

By Dejan Kovacevic | 7:10 p.m. Wednesday

HOUSTON -- Pirates president Frank Coonelly tonight described himself as "frustrated" by the pace of talks with first-round draft pick Pedro Alvarez, the slugging third baseman out of Vanderbilt University.

"I am frustrated that negotiations haven't concluded of yet," Coonelly said by phone from Pittsburgh. "We were very hopeful to have Pedro playing for one of the Pirates' affiliates by now. Other premier college players who signed early, like Troy Tulowitzki, Ryan Braun and Evan Longoria, have used the additional year of development as a stepping stone to get into majors within 10-12 months of being drafted, and we tried to work Pedro into that situation."

But no more, apparently.

The Pirates had expressed hope upon drafting Alvarez with the No. 2 overall pick June 5 that he would sign quickly enough that be could get enough seasoning this year to have a chance to ascend as far as Pittsburgh by next year. In the three examples Coonelly gave, all three signed within two weeks. These talks already have taken six.

Teams must sign all draft picks by Major League Baseball's Aug. 15 deadline, or those players go back into the pool next year. For Alvarez, that would mean a senior year at Vanderbilt. For the Pirates, that would mean a compensation pick in 2009 at No. 3 overall.

Coonelly became the first since draft day, on either side, to go public about the Alvarez talks. Alvarez and his family have declined requests from the Post-Gazette to be interviewed, and his agent, Scott Boras, has not returned messages, including one for this article.

Because the circle involved in the talks is so small - perhaps no more than four - financial parameters are not known. A team source not directly involved told the Post-Gazette earlier this week that the sides were $2 million apart, but information since then suggests the figure is larger, perhaps much larger.

The general perception in the baseball community is that Alvarez is seeking a bonus in the range of $7 million, plus a major league contract that would guarantee him eight figures. The No. 1 pick, the Tampa Bay Rays' Tim Beckham, signed last month for a $6.1 million bonus and no major league contract.

Coonelly said he is detecting a pattern that agents are advising first-round picks to hold out until the deadline, perhaps to draw a line in the sand. In the 2007 draft, the first in which the new compensation rules were implemented, all 30 first-round picks signed, a great rarity and one that might have been interpreted as unusual complicity. This year, only 18 have signed so far, including just Beckham among the top five and two of the top nine.

"It appears from our discussions that there is a feeling among the player representatives that they shouldn't negotiate seriously until Aug. 15," Coonelly said. "That's frustrating for me and, I suspect, others in the industry."

Coonelly knows the process as well as than anyone: In his previous role as MLB's chief legal counsel, he worked closely with teams on all aspects of draft bonuses.

Coonelly continued to decilne to discuss specifics of the negotiations with Alvarez.

"Those will stay between us and Pedro and the family and Scott," Coonelly said. "We will not negotiate through the press."

He did say, though, that the Pirates, if they do not sign Alvarez, would redistribute his money to "other high-end picks" in their draft class.

Did you mean to quote Coonelly as saying, "We will NOT negotiate through the press?"

Hey Dejan, I certainly hope you misquoted Coonelly at the end there, and it wasn't actually a Freudian slip on his part.

Uh oh.

Not signing Alvarez would mean I have to change my screen name!

Dejan, did Coonelly seem more angry or frustrated?  Seems to me that, by going on the record, he is negotiating through the press - with the fans.  Not to be cynical, but this sounds like pre-emptive damage control in the event that they can't sign Alvarez.  Or, to be fair, was his motivation simply based in frustration over the fact that Alvarez has passed the point of 'accellerated' development for 2008?

"and all but one in the second round did, too"

better check your research on that

To the question about anger/frustration: I did not detect anger in the slightest. Bear in mind, this is not someone new to dealing with negotiations, including hard negotiations, including working with/against Scott Boras.

He felt the need to comment publicly for the first time, possibly because he had so many requests to do so, and he offered a characterization of what is there now. Whether that was calculated or negotiating in public or even a response to the piece our paper had the other day about the $2 million gap, there is no way of knowing.

But anger? No. Not at all.

I love pictures....Every time I see Frankie Koolaid's picture I'm reminded of a young Ronald Reagan...and every time I see a picture of Dejan, I'm reminded of one of the greatest detectives of the 20th century... Shaggy from Scooby Doo... Where are you? ...Paul Meyer does not remind me of Velma, thou...

Dejan,

When players like Nady and Alvarez choose Boras as an agent, do they understand the message they are sending to the club and the fans?  In short they are telling us they are here for the money.

From a fans perspective, there is no reason to get emotionally tied to the player - we know they will depart for cash at their first free agent opportunity.  From the clubs point of view, they know they have no reason to invest long term in the player or market that player heavily to the fans (again, we know they will be gone soon enough).

Due to the points in their career, the situation for Nady and Alvarez are different:

- Nady has said he wants to stay, but his action of retaining Boras has sealed his fate that it won't happen.  With his numbers this year (and improving trend), he could be a star here.  Instead, he will be a 3rd OF'er somewhere else (but he will get his FA $$$$).  This maybe more frustrating to the fans because he bemoans his eminent departure in the press.

- Alvarez has a chance to play ML baseball.  His waiting until after college eligibility showed he has more on the ball than just baseball.  I doubt the offer being made by the Bucs is patently unfair and an early signing would have helped him reach the big club sooner (increasing his dollars long term).  Instead, with Boras, he will wait until the last moment to squeeze every last signing bonus dollar - it will probably translate to more time in the minors (meaning less money long term) and start his career on a sour note.

Sorry for the rant, but I just don't get it.  Surely the money differential is not that great that it means sacrificing these other attributes.  Why choose Boras unless you mean to project "the dollars come first?"

The very last line in the article states that if Pedro Alvarez can't be signed, the Pirates would take the money that was earmarked for Alvarez and redistribute it to "other high-end picks" in their draft class.  If that were the case, would that mean the Pirates would need to break off talks with Alvarez prior to the August 15 deadline since all draft picks must adhere to the same deadline?  To use Alvarez's money for other draft picks, there would need to be some time to negotiate with this "extra" money.  Maybe I'm interpreting that incorrectly, but I hope the team would go down to the wire with Alvarez given the history of Boras draft negotiations.

I would hope that they wouldn't go down to the deadline. To be honest, this years draft class was not all that great, and I doubt anyone would take Alverez in the first round let alone 2nd overall next year. I really hope Papa Alverez is smart enough to terminate the "advisory" role and tell Pedro to ink a deal, because, hombre... it doesn't get much better than it is right now.

Wouldn't it be great if we DIDN't sign Alvarez and then took him next year with a LOWER (compensation) pick? I guess then his options would be Independent ball, a la Drew?

I can dream, right?
