I couldn't have said it better myself ...

Something about Friday night's Backyard Brawl that probably didn't get talked about in print journalism circles as much as on TV or the radio, was what happened before kickoff. With the stadium still filling up, both teams came together during pregame warmups and yelled and screamed at each other, never really wanting to fight, but giving the impression they did.

Well, Dave Hickman of The Charleston Gazette -- one of the finest sportswriters in the country -- had a wonderful way of describing the little dust-up. Hickman opined:

"....West Virginia and Pitt players had one of those ridiculous jawing matches at midfield about 20 minutes before the game. No players were injured - or penalized - in the making of what increasingly appears to be made-for-TV confrontations. ...."

Although it was just one graph in Hickman's notebook, it is that kind of wit, sharp delivery and being there to get you that little nugget as to why I hope daily newspaper journalism never dies in this country.

The Charleston Gazette has very good WVU coverage.  I like HIckman and Vingle there.  As a subscriber to two dailies, I agree in the hope that newspapers never die.

Dave and Mitch are two professionals, as are Mike and Jack in the other Charleston paper.

That is a town that has four guys covering a team who, truly are, top notch reporters.

This is the writing that you feel is worthy of hoping print doesn't die?  Sorry, I'm not that impressed.  Sounds like an old-school complaint to much ado about nothing.

Also, no link to the full story?
