WVU 23rd in USAToday coaches poll, but wait a minute ...

A strange one here. In the latest USAToday coaches poll, West Virginia is No. 23, you can see it for yourself, click here.

West Virginia being 23rd isn't the strange part, and in reality, the Mountaineers are probably right around the 23rd best college football team in the land right now.

What is strange is this: South Florida is at No. 24 and Auburn one slot lower at 25th. Um, perhaps the pollsters missed those two games earlier this season (one just last week) when, you know, those two teams beat the Mountaineers, head-to-head, on a field.

Anyhow, it goes to further hammer home the point that the polls are really nothing more than fodder for people to talk about.

Is West Virginia, right now, almost two months later, better than an Auburn team that beat them at Auburn? Maybe, yes.

Are the Mountaineers, eight days later, and after struggling with Louisville, better than a USF team that beat them? I don't see how you can figure as much, at least for a poll's sake.

And for what it is worth, West Virginia is tied for second in the "others receiving votes" section of today's AP Top 25 poll with 54 votes. In essence, that means the AP voters have them ranked in a tie for No. 27th with, guess who -- Auburn. South Florida is in the top 25 in that poll, ranked No. 23.
