It might have been the best $60 million Sony ever spent.
That's what the distributor paid for the film rights to "This Is It," the Michael Jackson movie based on rehearsal footage for the tour that never happened.
The movie has made $21.3 million in North America and $101 million worldwide so far. It was No. 1 at the box office, topping "Paranormal Activity," which was second with $16.5 million. And just imagine the business the movie will eventually do on DVD.
Rounding out the top 10, according to Variety (with final numbers due Monday as always):
3. "Law Abiding Citizen," $7.3 million.
4. "Couples Retreat," $6.1 million.
5. "Saw VI," $5.6 million.
6. "Where the Wild Things Are," $5.1 million.
7. "The Stepfather," $3.4 million.
8. "Amelia," $3 million.
9. "Astro Boy," $3 million.
10. "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant," $2.8 million.
