That clattering sound you hear is Republicans in the Pennsylvania Legislature trying to keep their documents away from the probing eyes of a state grand jury's Bonusgate investigation. Turnabout may be fair play, but apparently not when state Attorney General Tom Corbett, who got indictments against a slew of Democrats last year, fixes his sights on the other party.
Today's story by my PG colleague, Dennis B. Roddy, lays out the closed-door battle before a Commonwealth Court judge between state prosecutors and lawyers for the House Republican caucus. Apparently, the GOP thinks Mr. Corbett, himself a Republican, wants to see too many e-mails, memos and other records to determine if some of the caucus's state-employed staff members were used or paid illegally to work on political campaigns. Funny, I don't remember Republican leaders saying the AG was looking at too many of the Democrats' files before those indictments came down last year.
The best course for the Republicans is to show the prosecutors whatever they want to see. The truth shall set you free, right?
