Road kill (cont'd.)

Tom Waseleski

Here's another potential source of revenue for road/bridge repair. PennDOT just called back to say that if the Legislature raised by $1  the vehicle registration fee (now $36 per passenger car) and the driver's license fee ($26 for general drivers), Pennsylvania would collect another $13 million a year.

The payoff's not as big as a higher gas tax, but it could be another ingredient in a user-fee solution.

I think it's time to bite-the-bullet and raise the gas tax by twenty-five cents. Decaying roads and bridges constitute only one part of this country's deteriorating infrastructure, but it has the greatest impact in terms of employment and commerce. The longer we procrastinate, the more it will cost.
