Where's the GOP?

Tom Waseleski

I don't know about you, but I think there's too much of an official Democratic face on the Wall Street bailout. Just look at this morning's Post-Gazette, with the page 1 photo of Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Chris Dodd at the news conference announcing the deal yesterday. All Democrats.

But who begged for the bailout? President Bush and his Republican administration. Meanwhile, it's Republicans in Congress who are still expressing reservations and sounding populist notes that will be sung all the way to Election Day.

Responsible leadership in Washington may have had no choice but to craft this costly, publicly financed rescue. But the Democrats, in a key election year, should have insisted on a bigger public buy-in by their GOP chums.
