FF Football League Trade 11/10/2009

Xtreme Machine gets Brett Favre:

Warbirds gets Steven Jackson:
Not only is Brett Favre playing well, he's playing like the guy he was 15 years ago. Playing behind the best offensive line in football, with the best RB in football behind, Favre is setup for success and it taking advantage of it.  He's an MVP candidate with 16 TDs and 3 INTs at the mid way point of the season.  Favre also has a very favorable schedule the rest of the way and most of those games will be played in the friendly confines of the Metrodome. You can't talk about the Rams offense without talking about Steven Jackson.  Simply because he IS the whole offense.  The Rams have gone from the "Greatest Show on Turf" to the a "One Man Show".  Despite having a poor QB, no WRs and a poor offensive line, S-Jax still finds ways to make things happen whether its rushing or receiving and contribute at least 10 fantasy points each week.

Trade Analysis:
This is a pretty even trade.  My team has been a mess at QB all season.  Donovan McNabb was injured for the easy part of his schedule and now is facing the tough part.  I can't trust Matt Hasselbeck due to the lack of protection he's getting in Seattle and Vince Young was a gamble.  I'm already loaded at RB (Ray Rice, Ronnie Brown, Frank Gore) and acquiring an MVP caliber QB like Favre is a big step in the right direction.

Warbirds has Drew Brees at QB, so Favre was trade bait that could be used to acquire whatever he needed.  He saw RB as a weakness and solidified that position with Steven Jackson.

What do you guys think?  Did someone get a steal or was this pretty even?

Even? In the words of Lee Corso, "NOT so fast, my friend!"

Nick, your roster now includes 4 QBs. You may have had a problem early in the year because of injuries to Matt Hasselbeck and Donovan McNabb (simultaneously), but now they're both healthy and playing reasonably well. Really, you should have been looking to deal one of those guys in a trade, I think.

Warbirds won this trade, hands down, but based on how both teams' rosters are set up now. In a league this shallow, everyone has at least one serviceable QB, making them very difficult to deal if you've got depth. But that's exactly what Warbirds did. He's now got 4 VERY serviceable RBs (Slaton, Forte, Jackson and Jones). He could easily deal one of those guys for help at WR if he wanted to, or just play the matchups game with them for the next 6 weeks.

Nice job, Warbirds. I'm coming for you, but that trade may have held me off for a few weeks...

Its even in the fact that you traded away a guy that's doing nothing for a terrible team and got a guy that's doing well but has a history of late-season breakdowns.  You probably have the bigger upside getting Favre, but by the end of the year you probably traded one bench player for another.

The way I saw it is thus.  I had a great bench player in Brett Favre who is prone to falling off the face of the earth after the byes are over.  Is this going to happen this year?  Probably not.

I figure a great running back in return for a player I picked up in the something-teenth round in the draft is a good play, especially since this is the only week I would consider starting Favre over Brees.

At the end of the day, trading away a bench player for someone who will probably start every week the rest of the way through is win-win for the both of us.

You also have the added bonus of dropping 2 or 3 QBs to open up extra slots on your roster.  Not that there's a lot of mid shelf talent left or anything, but you got options.

I feel I could have gotten more out of Favre, though I am happy with getting something instead of having him ride the pine.

Who knows, I might have accidentally opened the door for a heck of a comeback run.   Maybe I solidified a runaway for me.

Time will tell.

Oh yeah, just for laughs, my team name "Warbirds" is what I was calling the Penguins while they were pursuing a move to K.C..  I thought it would be a good name for them there.

Oh, more trades to come.  Trying to get a couple blockbusters done before the deadline.

Wow, not a lot of love for this trade from the FF jury.

KZ - McNabb and Hasselbeck are both healthy and playing alright, but I don't like their matchups for the remainder of the season.  McNabb has some tough ones coming up and Hasselbeck, despite having an easier schedule can't be trusted with his offensive line.  His injury history and a bad o-line isn't a good combo.  Part of my problem this year is consistency at the QB position.  Favre has a great team around him, an easy schedule and the home crowd for most of his remaining games.  I had 4 great RBs and I can only play 3 at a time, so having one sit on the bench while I'm having problems at QB would have been less effective.

BurghBuckeye - I can guarantee you, that unless Favre gets injured, he'll be my QB for most of the remaining weeks, if not all of them.

BNaugh - You played the whole situation well.  You had two great QBs, you traded away the lesser of the two (I mean, let's face it you'd have to be crazy to take out Brees) and got something good in return.  I think you may have opened the door for me to make a comeback, but that could just be my optimism getting the best of me.  The KC Warbirds, that's actually pretty good.  I like that.
