Fantasy Baseball Notes 7/17/2009

- There's only a 50/50 chance that Jake Peavy will pitch again this season.  The Padres ace went down with a strained tendon in his right ankle and its unclear as to whether he'll rejoin the team.  With the Padres out of contention, I don't foresee them pushing this.  If and only if he's 100 percent will he take the mound again this season and right now that seems doubtful.  This would be a big loss for fantasy owners that are probably relying on him to be the ace of their team.

- BJ Ryan is back in professional baseball... sort of.  The former Blue Jays closer signed a minor league deal with the Cubs.  If you're hanging onto Ryan because you're either stubborn or clueless, don't get your hopes up.  Even if he does get on the Cubs, he won't have a significant role with the team.

- The NY Mets walking wounded are still suffering and will be a little while longer.  Carlos Delgado won't be back till August, Carlos Beltran isn't even cleared to jog yet, and Jose Reyes will return later this month if everything goes well.  If you drafted a lot of Mets thinking they would have a big year, you're really hurting by this point.

- Pedro Martinez is expected to make his first start around July 30th when they play the Giants.  That should be a good match up for his first game back as the Giants aren't exactly known for their hitting.

- The Boston Red Sox have expressed an interest in acquiring the hot hitting Scott Rolen.  With Mike Lowell due to return from the DL today, its an interesting trade possibility.  With the way Rolen is hitting, if he were to get injected into the Red Sox lineup, it would give him a huge boost in numbers.

I was able to pull of a version of the deal from the last article:

I give:

Ichiro

Nate McLouth

Jorge Posada

JA Happ

I get:

Jason Bay

Ryan Ludwick

AJ Burnett

I think I did pretty well in this trade. I had to trade Posada since I had Wieters and Doumit was off the DL. But he was too valuable to just drop. Happ has been a VERY nice surprise since I picked him up about a month ago. He threw another great game last night too. It's tough to give him up, but I needed an upgrade with Peavy probably being done for the year. I'm not a big Ludwick fan at all...but getting Bay more than makes up for it. Hopefully Ludwick can put up some good power numbers in the second half.

Great!  I think that's a really good deal for you.  This trade really impact your opponents team in a negative way.  How much longer will Ichiro and Posada play?  Happ looks strong right now, but its still early to have a lot of confidence in him.  With Burnett, you know what you're getting.  For a keeper league, this looks to be a very good future move on your part.

Ludwick is one of these guys that is a product of his environment like Pat Burrell or Jayson Werth.  He'll put up big numbers simply because of the lineup around him.  He had a bad couple of months in May and June, but this month he's on fire.  You really can't go wrong with a guy that bats right before or right after Albert Pujols.
