Cooke suspended two games - 11-29-09

Penguins forward Matt Cooke has been suspended two games without pay for a hit to the head of Rangers forward Artem Anisimov last night.

Cooke was given an interference penalty on the hit which took place in the third period of the Penguins' 8-3 rout of the Rangers.

The teams meet again tomorrow at Madison Square Garden.

EN Says: The NHL got this one right. Cooke left his feet and hit an opponent in the head. The intent and the results were clear. And Cooke's history played a role in this as well.

Additionally, the NHL defuses a potential powder keg Monday with the team's playing back to back games. We're sure it will still be intense. You just won't be as likely to see players like Sean Avery or Donald Brashear trying to extract some frontier justice.

That said, if Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin or any other star player lands that hit, they're playing on Monday.

It is reasons like this that makes the NHL a Joke.  How can you justify suspending Cooke for his hit and not Captain Leadership Mike Richards for his.  Colin Campbell is a JOKE

Richards should have been punished also... Booth is still out.

I don't disagree with this suspension. But, how can they NOT suspend Richards for pretty much the exact same hit?

With Cooke out two games, could we try someone from WBS instead of Chris Bourque?  I think the Bourque experiement is a failure.  Caputi or Wallace both play with a little edge and would fit in well on the third line.

How can anyone agree with this suspention if you disagree with OV & Richards not being suspended? Doesn't makek sense.

OV & Richards didn't get suspended, so neither should Cooke.

NHL has serious leadership issues. Call it even across the board, the Cooke hit should be a suspension whether it's Cooke, Richards, or Crosby that delivers it. Look at how the NFL deals with blows to the head. If it happens it's a penalty regardless of whether or not a "star" is the guilty one.

The lack of discipline on stars in the NHL is amazingly ridiculous.  It's almost to the point where it's comical.  Ovi received a boarding call after hitting Patrick Kaleta from behind.  He received a 5 minute major penalty and a Game Misconduct penalty.  The next night, Patrick Kaleta hit a player from behind and he received a 2 game suspension.  The inconsistency is aggravating as a fan.  I feel like a star will have to kill someone before any discipline will be taken.
