Penguins

-Dave Molinari's recap from yesterday's game. Brent Johnson (above, stopping New York's Kyle Okposo) might've been the only reason this was a one-goal game.

-The New York Daily News' recap. The Penguins' failed power-play opportunity in the second period gave the Islanders a spark heading into the lopsided third period.

-The Associated Press' recap. Roloson has made 77 saves in his past two games combined.

-NHL.com's recap. John Tavares showed why the Islanders drafted him No. 1 overall in the summer.

-Highlights courtesy of EN contributor GhostWalker40:

-Mike Lange's goal calls.

-Sidney Crosby and Brent Johnson speak:

-Dan Bylsma did not have a problem with Jordan Staal's third period fight with Nate Thompson.

-Games on Long Island mean one thing. Amazing photos from Getty Images. Here's a cool photo sequence of Tavares' winning goal:

(Nice Billy Joel banner.)

-And the overhead view of Tavares' goal:

-Johnson stretching out:

-Evgeni Malkin won't be shaving anytime soon:

-Happy times for Malkin and Matt Cooke:

-Cooke and New York's Trent Hunter got airborne on this hit:

-Johnson getting wet and wild:

-Mark Eaton laid out Trent Hunter with a Muhammad Ali-esque left. We think:

-New York's Dwayne Roloson didn't seem to appreciate having Malkin's butt in his face:

-Johnson sprawled out on this shot attempt by New York's Frans Nielsen:

-Derek Engelland didn't exactly fare too well in his fight with New York's TIm Jackman:

-Staal getting intense with Thompson:

-Fedotenko getting denied in tight by Roloson:

-The Islanders crashing Johnson's crease:

-New York's Josh Bailey being popular:

-Brooks Orpik talks about his day with the Stanley Cup:

-Mark Letestu had a goal and an assist for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 4-3 loss at Rochester.

-With forward Joe Vitale dealing with a shoulder injury, the AHL Penguins recalled forward T.J. Fox from Wheeling.

-Chris Capraro had a goal and an assist for the Wheeling Nailers in a 4-1 win at Elmira.

-Happy 25th birthday to current Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. The first overall pick of the 2003 draft, Fleury's 125 wins are the second-most in Penguins history. His 15 shutouts are also the second-best total in franchise history. He was the team's starting goaltender during its Stanley Cup championship run last season.

-Happy 36th birthday to former Penguins forward Brian Bonin. Bonin is one of three former Hobey Baker Award winners -- college hockey's version of the Heisman Trophy -- to have played for the Penguins. The others were Brian Holzinger and Kip Miller.

Atlantic Division

-Scoreboard Watch for the Penguins: Shootout goals by Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbruner gave the Devils a 2-1 win at Boston. Parise had New Jersey's regulation goal while Martin Brodeur (above) made 32 saves for the win. Tuukka Rask made 36 saves for the Bruins. The Devils are in second place in the Atlantic Division with 33 points, one less than the first place Penguins.

-Brodeur broke Patrick Roy's NHL record for career minutes played and was given an ovation from Boston's fans.

-Brodeur is expected to become a United States citizen Tuesday.

-Devils forward David Clarkson suffered a right ankle injury yesterday.

-Islanders defenseman Andy Sutton suffered a groin injury in yesterday's win against the Penguins. Defenseman Andrew MacDonald is expected to be recalled from Bridgeport of the AHL to replace him.

-Is Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk (right) the favorite to win the Calder Trophy?

-To say the least, Phish and Flyers hockey aren't exactly two things we envision in the same world together.

Northeast Division

-Tim Connolly had two goals and two assists and led the Sabres to a 4-3 win at Philadelphia. Teammate Drew Stafford added a goal and an assist while Ryan Miller made 31 saves in the win. The Sabres snapped a four-game losing streak while the Flyers lost for the fourth time out of their past five games.

-Sabres forward Paul Gaustad and defenseman Craig Rivet each suffered leg injuries last night.

-Flyers forward Jared Ross was injured on a hit into the boards by Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta:

-Kaleta was kicked out of the game for the hit.

-That's a tough call there. Ross turns his back towards Kaleta and that gives Kaleta roughly one second to pull up. He doesn't pull up and Ross gets hurt. That's reminds us of the Brooks Orpik hit on Erik Cole several years ago. How do fault the aggressor in that situation when there's a split second to pull up?

-Rivet had two fights with Philadelphia's Daniel Carcillo:

-Carcillo about to drop the hammer:

-That wasn't the Flyers' only injury. Forward Ian Laperriere blocked a slapper by Sabres forward Jason Pominville with his mouth. He lost four teeth, received a whole mess of stitches and still returned to the game.

-Niklas Hagman and Phil Kessel each had two goals for the Maple Leafs in a 6-4 win at Florida. Teammate Alexei Ponikarovsky added a goal and three assists while Jonas Gustavsson made 26 saves in the win. Dmitry Kulikov led Florida with two goals.

-Check out Kessel's first goal:

-Check out this play Toronto's Jason Blake made after he lost his stick:

-Fight of the night goes to Toronto's Colton Orr and Florida's Steve MacIntyre:

-Hagman > Florida's Tomas Vokoun:

-Happy times for the Maple Leafs:

-Toronto's Mikhail Grabovski was a lonely man in this celebration:

-Vokoun got some help on this shot by Kessel:

-To say the least, Gustavsson was out of place for this goal by Kulikov:

-We said this earlier this week, but the Panthers' new third jerseys don't mesh well with the equipment of Vokoun:

-They're not much better for backup Scott Clemmensen either:

-The Senators recalled defenseman Erik Karlsson, a first-round pick in 2008, from Binghamton of the AHL and demoted defenseman Brian Lee.

-A sprained ankle is expected to sideline Bruins forward Milan Lucic approximately a month.

Southeast Division

-Kurtis Foster (above, with teammate Martin St. Louis) had two goals for the Lightning in a 5-1 rout of the Rangers. Steven Stamkos added a goal and an assist while Martin St. Louis recorded three assists. Mike Smith made 26 saves in the win.

-Either St. Louis is really small or New York's Marc Staal is really tall. Or both:

-There's at least one Dethklok fan in Tampa Bay:

-Maxim Afinogenov and Ilya Kovalchuk each had a goal and an assist for the Thrashers in a wild 6-4 comeback win at Carolina. Tobia Enstrom added three assists for Atlanta while teammate Bryan Little recorded two assists. Ondrej Pavelec made 32 saves in the win. Erik Cole led the Hurricanes with a goal and an assist.

-Happy times for Afinogenov (center), Kovalchuk, Pavel Kubina and Tobias Enstrom:

-Check out the placement of this shot by Kovalchuk:

-Pavelec sprawled out to make this save on Cole:

-In a season full of disappointment, this might've been the Hurricanes' worst loss. The were up 4-1 entering the third period.

-The Hurricanes demoted goaltender Justin Peters to Albany of the AHL.

-The Lightning demoted defenseman Matt Smaby to Norfolk of the AHL.

-With defenseman Tyler Sloan leaving the team for personal reasons, the Capitals recalled forward Alexandre Giroux from Hershey of the AHL.

-The Panthers demoted defenseman Ville Koistinen to Rochester of the AHL.

Central Division

-T.J. Oshie had two assists and helped the Blues win at Nashville, 3-1. Chris Mason (above) made 37 saves to defeat his former team. The Predators had a seven-game winning streak snapped.

-The Blue Jackets recalled forward Alexandre Picard from Syracuse of the AHL and demoted forward Tim Sestito.

-Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom confirmed he will play for Sweden in the Olympics.

-The Blackhawks and Patrick Kane unveiled their "new" third jersey:

-It's essentially a variation of what they wore in last season's Winter Classic. The biggest difference it the crossing tomahawks on the shoulder which are really sharp:

-Blues defenseman and former Penguin Darryl Sydor has embraced his role as a mentor with St. Louis.

Northwest Division

-Miikka Kiprusoff (above) made 40 saves and led the Flames to a 3-0 shutout win at Detroit. Olli Jokinen and Jamie Lundmark each had a goal and an assist for Calgary while teammate Jarome Iginla added two assists. The Red Wings were shutout in consecutive home games for the first time since 1977.

-The Flames got a big break when Red Wings forward Daniel Cleary was called for goaltenders interference on this non-goal:

-That's a bad call.

-Flames coach Brent Sutter warns his players about not shaking Kris Draper's hand. We think:

-We don't want to say Detroit's Chris Osgood played the wrong angle on this shot, but...

-A hat trick from Chuck Kobasew helped the Wild beat the Avalanche, 5-3. Teammate Andrew Brunette recorded a goal and an assist while Minnesota captain Mikko Koivu added three assists. Niklas Backstrom made 31 saves in the win. Chris Stewart led Colorado with a goal and an assist.

-Kobasew's hat trick:

-The Avalanche is banged up. Forward Milan Hejduk suffered a knee injury yesterday. Additionally, defenseman Adam Foote (jaw) was placed on injured reserve. With those injuries, Colorado recalled forward Chris Durno and defenseman Joe Fahey from Lake Erie of the AHL.

-Former Canadiens forward Guillaume Latendresse made his debut with the Wild yesterday.

-When the Avalanche pays a visit to Mellon Arena next week, it will be the moveable object (Colorado's penalty kill) versus the resitable object (Pittsburgh's power play).

-Flames defenseman Cory Sarich is dealing with an undisclosed injury.

-Oilers forward Ales Hemsky will miss the rest of the season due to a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

-Hemsky was injured on this hit from behind by Kings forward Michal Handzus earlier this week:

-The Wild put defenseman Brent Burns (concussion) and forward Martin Havlat (hamstring) on injured reserve and recalled defenseman Jaime Sifers from Houston of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-Remember how the Blackhawks were supposed to be the favorite for the Stanley Cup? Well the Ducks didn't get that memo. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 28 saves for Anaheim in a 3-0 shutout of Chicago. Teemu Selanne (above) led the Ducks with two goals. The Blackhawks had an eight-game winning streaks snapped.

-Happy times for Selanne, center, and teammate Corey Perry. Not so much for Chicago's John Madden:

-We don't want to say Chicago's Colin Fraser and Ben Eager have suspect skating ability, but...

-A shootout goal by Joe Pavelski helped the Sharks claim a 5-4 comeback win at Edmonton. Patrick Marleau led San Jose with a hat trick and an assist. His third goal was shorthanded score that tied the game with 1:26 left in regulation. Teammate Joe Thornton added three assists. Ryan Potulny led the Oiles with two assists.

-This was the best best photo we could find, but Sheldon Souray and the Oilers wore their sharp throwback uniforms:

-Two goals from Lauri Korpikoski helped the Coyotes beat the Stars, 5-2. Matthew Lombardi and Scottie Upshall each had three assists while Ilya Bryzgalov made 30 saves in the victory.

-Bryzgalov has become a Stars killer.

-Cool Photo of the Night: Bryzgalov alone in the spotlight:

-Second Cool Photo of the Night: Phoenix's Shane Doan and Dallas' Tom Wandell taking a faceoff:

-Happy times for the Coyotes:

-Stars forward Mike Modano is 39 years old yet he still looks like he's 27:

-Chicago Cubs Hall-of-Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins caught this game:

-The Coyotes recalled forward Mikkel Boedkker, a first-round pick in 2008, from San Antonio of the AHL.

-Phoenix coach and former Penguins forward Dave Tippett called out forward Peter Mueller, a first-round pick in 2006, for his lack of production.

-The Sharks activated forward Torrey Mitchell (knee) from injured reserve and demoted forward Steven Zalewski to Worcester of the AHL.

Adams Division

-Brianna Delaney had a goal and an assist for the Robert Morris women's team in a 5-2 loss to Rensselaer.

-Today would've been the 95th birthday of former Pittsburgh Hornets forward Modere "Mud" Bruneteau. While with the Red Wings, Bruneteau scored the game winning goal in a 1-0 defeat of the Montreal Maroons at 16:30 of the sixth overtime in the opening game of a semifinal round series of the 1936 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It remains the longest game in NHL history.

-Happy 68th birthday to former Pittsburgh Hornets forward Norm Beaudin.
