Empty Netter Assists - 11-18-09

Penguins

-Meet the "Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Three." (Note: We're determined to make that name stick like the "Muskegon Line.")

-Will the Penguins' rash of injuries prompt Ray Shero to look for talent outside of the organization?

-If you happen to be on Brunswick Streek in Halifax, N.S. tonight around 6:50 p.m., Atlantic Standard Time (They're an hour ahead of us), annnnddd... you happen to be a fan of Sidney Crosby (above) and/or the Olympic Torch.... Good news!

-We're a day late, but here are the highlights in HD of Monday's game courtesy of EN contributor GhostWalker 40:

-R.J. Umberger Nate Guenin is from Pittsburgh Hopewell.

-Were the 2003-04 Penguins the third worst team of this decade?

-FSN Pittsburgh will begin airing three Penguins-specific shows.

-The Penguins will host their own Russian-language show on their HD radio station.

-Injuries to the NHL Penguins have created an opportunity for defenseman Lane Caffaro with the AHL Penguins.

-The WIlkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins announced their bobblehead schedule. They'll be giving away three bobbleheads and two of the players who inspired them are in the NHL at the moment. Current NHL Penguins Deryk Engelland and Ben Lovejoy (right) will be memorialized in ceramic along with goaltender John Curry.

-Given that Curry will have a bobblehead, it might be wise to invest in some Kevlar for Brent Johnson.

-Another day. Another legendary Swedish player joining Modo of the Swedish Elite League. A day after the news of former Avalanche star Peter Forsberg joining Modo, former Penguins forward Markus Naslund announced he would join the club as well.

-Happy 55th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Tom Edur. Edur led all defensemen on the 1977-78 Penguins with 43 points (five goals, 38 assists) then retired after that season at the age of 23 to devote more time towards being a Jehovah's Witness.

-Happy 28th birthday to former Penguins forward Chris Minard. Currently a member of the Springfield Falcons, the Oilers' AHL affiliate, Minard played a total of 35 games the previous two seasons with the Penguins recording five points (two goals, three assists).

Atlantic Division

-Former Devils, Rangers, Red Wings, Whalers and Blues forward Brendan Shanahan (above) announced his retirement after 21 seasons in the NHL.

-Devils forward Zach Parise isn't a fan of this Pronger fellow in Philadelphia or his patented cross checks to the head.

-With forward Arron Asham dealing with a oblique injury, the Flyers recalled forward David Laliberte from Adirondack of the AHL.

-If you have $295 laying around, you can buy a seat from the soon-to-be demolished God-Forsaken, Rat-Infested Pig-Hole Dump Spectrum in Philadelphia.

Northeast Division

-Mike Fisher (above) scored two goals for the Senators in a 3-2 win against the rival Maple Leafs. Ottawa also got two assists each from Chris Campoli, Alexandre Picard and former Penguin Alex Kovalev. Fire Craig Patrick. Pascal Leclaire made 30 saves in the win.

-Leclaire had to scramble to make this save on Toronto's Jason Blake:

-Check out how many Toronto fans were in Scotiabank Place to celebrate this goal by Toronto's Niklas Hagman:

-Toronto's Phil Kessel just makes scoring goals look too easy sometimes:

-Even if the teams aren't that good these days, the Battle of Ontario is still pretty fierce.

-Toronto's Colton Orr rocked the world of Ottawa's Matt Carkner:

-Orr went over the top to land this blow:

-Ottawa's Chris Neil dropped Toronto's Luke Schenn then those two went at it:

-Neil looked like he enjoyed the fight a little too much:

-Neil checking a broken nail. We think:

-Ottawa forward and former Penguin Jarkko Ruutu dropped the gloves with Maple Leafs forward John Mitchell:

-Ottawa's Brian Lee made things really uncomfortable for Toronto's NIkolai Kulemin:

-Leclaire giving out a stick after the game:

-The Maple Leafs have given up the first goal in 17 of the 19 games this season.

-Maxim Lapierre scored the only goal of a six-round shootout and gave the Canadiens a 3-2 win against the Hurricanes. Tomas Plekanec recorded two assists for Montreal while Carey Price made 30 saves in the win.

-Lapierre's goal and Price's clutch save on Carolina's Matt Cullen to win the game:

-A good look at Price's save:

-The video is choppy, but check out this lucky goal Montreal's Andrei Kostitsyn scored:

-Price got some help from Plekanec on this puck:

-Awkward Photo of the Night: Montreal's Paul Mara having some serious issues:

-Carolina goaltender Manny Legace was weighing offers to buy some Molson XXX at the duty free for some Montreal youth. We think:

-We can never turn down a chance to post a photo of the nose of Carolina captain Rod Brind'Amour:

-Carolina's Bryan Rodney and Montreal's Max Pacioretty had some rather vivid facial expressions here:

-From the "Oh Boo-Friggin-Hoo" department, the Sabres have too many healthy defensemen.

Southeast Division

-Scoreboard Watch for the Penguins: Two assists from Mike Green helped the Capitals beat the Rangers, 4-2. Semyon Varlamov made a "whopping" 18 saves in the victory which was Washington's fifth out of its past six games. Marian Gaborik scored both of New York's goals. The win pushed the Capitals into first place in the Eastern Conference with 30 points, two more than the fourth-place Penguins. (Note: It's never too early to scoreboard watch.)

-On the night forward Alexander Ovechkin returned to the lineup after missing six games due to an "upper-body" injury, it was former Penguins forward Matt Bradley (above) who stole the show for Washington.

-Bradley got bloodied in a wild fight with New York's Aaron Voros:

-Cool photo of the fight:

-Bradley recovered from that to score the game-winning goal:

-Fire Craig Patrick.

-Nice to see New York's Sean Avery is as popular as ever:

-Ovechkin has a little captain in him apparently:

-There are four sets of eyes in this photo of the Rangers' crease and they're all pointed in different directions:

-Happy times for Ovechkin and teammate Nicklas Backstrom:

-Cool Photo of the Night: The Capitals stepping onto the ice at The World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden:

-The Rangers' bench:

-Capitals defenseman Quintin Laing suffered a broken jaw last night when he was hit in the face by a slap shot from Rangers defenseman and former Penguin Michal Rozsival.

-It wasn't all good news for the Capitals in terms of injuries to Russian forwards. Alexander Semin is dealing with what is described as a right wrist injury.

-With goaltender Jose Theodore excused from the team for personal reasons, the Capitals recalled goaltender Michal Neuvirth and forward Jay Beagle from Hershey of the AHL.

-For Thrashers forward Nik Antropov, a move from right wing to center was made a lot easier by having Ilya Kovalchuk on the left wing.

-Three weeks after being recalled from Albany of the AHL, Hurricanes forward Brandon Sutter, a first-round pick in 2007, has made a convincing case to stay in the NHL.

-As if things couldn't get any worse for the Hurricanes, they lost goaltender Michael Leighton to an injury.

Central Division

-David Legwand and Joel Ward each had a goal and two assists for the Predators who beat the Sharks, 4-3. Teammate Ryan Suter added two assists while goaltender Pekka Rinne made 29 saves in the win. Joe Thornton led San Jose with a goal and an assist.

-Nashville's Jason Arnott and San Jose's Thomas Greiss each kept their eyes on the puck:

-According to TSN, the expected contract extensions of Blackhawks forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews will have a salary cap hit of $6 million annually and will last five years. The expected extension for defenseman Duncan Keith will last 13 years and will have a lower, unspecificed cap hit.

-The Blue Jackets loaned forward Nikita Filatov, a first-round pick in 2008, to CSKA Moskow in the KHL for the remainder of the season.

-The Blues are another team with just too many darned healthy defensemen.

Northwest Division

-Ryan Wilson had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche in a 3-2 win at Calgary. Teammate Paul Stastny added two assists while Craig Anderson made 34 saves in the win.

-Colorado captain Adam Foote suffered a jaw injury last night.

-The Avalanche recalled forward Chris Durno from Lake Erie of the AHL.

-"Well, we certainly need production from him . . . I'm not going to deny that." - Flames coach Brent Sutter on forward Olli Jokinen (right) who has produced only two goals this season.

-The Flames demoted defenseman Staffan Kronwall to Abbotsford of the AHL.

-The Oilers are holding a contest to watch a game at Rexall Place with filmmaker Kevin Smith.

Pacific Division

-With forwards Devin Setoguchi (leg) and Brad Staubitz (face) dealing with injuries, the Sharks recalled forwards Benn Ferreiro, Frazer McLaren and Logan Couture, a first-round pick in 2007, from Worcester of the AHL.

Patrick Division

-Happy 81st birthday to former Pittsburgh Hornets forward Rudy Migay.

I'm no salary cap specialist, but how are the Blackhawks going to fit those new contracts under the cap?

According to the figures I managed to find in da intarweb, they would need to free some $5 million in cap space just to fit Kane's and Toews' contracts (taking this year's cap as a reference). $5 million would roughly be the difference between the reported $12 million and these players' current contracts.

Plus, it doesn't seem like Chicago has other expiring contracts that are big enough to cover this difference.

And this is not counting Keith's undisclosed new cap number.

Other than the cap going up next year (hardly a certainity), am I missing anything?

"WB-3" does sort of have a good ring to it. (Sorry Scranton)

"Jay McKee out 2-3 weeks" does not have a good ring to it.

Looks like the WBS3 will soon be the WBS4.  It is particularly annoying because I am planning on seeing the WBS Penguins play the Hershey Bears while home for Thanksgiving.

Speaking of scoreboard watching: I get flummoxed trying to interpret the standings when teams have played different numbers of games.  So I did a quick Excel sheet taking the current points per game average and extrapolating that over 82 games.  Two questions:

1) Would this help anyone else if I post it in a comment once a week or so?

2) Seth, would that step on your toes?

For example, right now the projected points and standings look like this:

Projected Points-- Team

121 -- New Jersey

121 -- Buffalo

117 -- Washington

111 -- Philadelphia

109 -- Pittsburgh

101 -- Atlanta

100 -- Tampa Bay

96 -- Ottawa

90 -- NY Rangers

90 -- NY Islanders

82 -- Boston

78 -- Montreal

73 -- Florida

47 -- Toronto

45 -- Carolina
