-Happy 39th birthday to former Penguins defenseman Chris Tamer. The rough and tough Tamer led the 1997-98 Penguins with 181 penalty minutes. He is currently a trainer at Hyperfit USA, a gym in Michigan.
-Happy 53rd birthday to former Penguins forward Bobby Simpson. Simpson appeared in 26 games for the 1981-82 Penguins and recorded a respectable 18 points (nine goals, nine assists).
Atlantic Division
-Claude Giroux had two assists for the Flyers in a 3-2 win against the Devils. Ray Emery made 33 saves in the win. Zach Parise had a goal and an assist for New Jersey which had it's nine-game road winning streak snapped. The Devils fell one win short of tying the 2006-07 Sabres' record of 10 consecutive road wins to open the season.
-Philadephia's Daniel Briere and New Jersey's Martin Brodeur got low and kept their eyes on the puck:

-Philadelphia forward Arron Asham will be out 10 to 14 days due to an oblique strain.
-Devils forward Patrik Elias recorded his first two points - both assists - of the season.
-Two goals by former Penguins prospect Matt Moulson helped the Islanders win at Boston, 4-1. Fire Ray Shero. Former Penguin Richard Park contributed three assists while Dwayne Roloson made 28 saves in the win. Fire Craig Patrick.

-Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said he would like to retire with Ottawa.

-Vincent Lecavalier (above) had two goals and an assist for the Lightning in a 4-1 win at Phoenix. Alex Tanguay contributed a goal and two assists while former Penguin Ryan Malone recorded two assists. Mike Smith made 30 saves in the win.

-Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin is expected to return to the lineup tonight after missing several game due to an "upper-body" injury.
Central Division
-Shootout goals by Fedor Tyutin and Jake Voracek gave the Blue Jackets a 3-2 win against the Oilers. Tyutin had two assists while teammate Anton Stralman contributed a goal and assist in regulation. Former Penguin Mathieu Garon made 23 saves in the win. Fire Ray Shero. Lubomir Visnovsky led Edmonton with a goal and an assist.
-At 18-4, Garon has the NHL's best career shootout record. Fire Ray Shero.
-The Blackhawks are expected to sign forwards Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and defenseman Duncan Keith to contract extensions this week. All three players are scheduled to become restricted free agents after this season.
-The Blackhawks demoted forward Bryan Bickell to Rockford of the AHL.
-The Blues are still trying to figure out if they want to keep defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, their first-round pick in 2008, or send him back to his junior team.
Northwest Division
-Former Avalanche star Peter Forsberg will stay with Modo in the Swedish Elite League this season.
Pacific DIvision

-Jack Johnson's shootout goal gave the Kings a 4-3 win at Florida. Randy Jones led Los Angeles with a goal and an assist while Jonathan Quick (above) made 26 saves in the win. Florida got a goal and an assist from Cory Stillman.
-Los Angeles' Alexander Frolov got a lot of pressure on this play from Florida goaltender Tomas Vokoun and teammates Jordan Leopold and Keith Ballard:

-Los Angeles' Michal Handzus cares not for the personal space of Vokoun:

-Kings forward Ryan Smyth suffered an "upper-body" injury last night.
-Ducks forward Kyle Calder is happy to be back in the NHL.
-Anaheim forward Todd Marchant denied a charge his teammates have tuned out head coach Randy Carlye.
-The Coyotes recalled forward Kevin Porter from San Antonio of the AHL.
-The Sharks demoted forward Logan Couture, a first-round pick in 2007, to Worcester of the AHL.
-Stars coach Marc Crawford has challenged his defensemen to join the attack.
-Today wouldve been the 85th birthday of former Pittsburgh Hornets forward Billy Warwick.
