About the Ducks - 11-16-09

A preview of the Ducks.

When and where: 7:30 p.m., Mellon Arena.

TV: FSN Pittsburgh, Prime.

Record: 6-9-3, 15 points. The Ducks are in last place in the Western Conference and Pacific Division.

Leading Scorer: Corey Perry, 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists).

Last Game: 7-4 road loss to the Red Wings, Saturday. Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and three assists for the Ducks

Last Game against the Penguins: 4-3 home loss, Nov. 3. Kris Letang had a goal and an assist.

Ducks Player We Would Bet Money On Scoring: How do you go against Corey Perry? He controlled the Penguins crease and scored twice in the Nov. 3 game.

Ex-Penguins on the Ducks: Randy Carlyle, head coach; Erik Christensen, C; Ryan Whitney (right), D.

Ex-Ducks/Mighty Ducks on the Penguins: Dan Bylsma, head coach; Chris Kunitz, LW; Martin Skoula, D.

Useless Ducks/Mighty Ducks Trivia Vaguely Related to the Penguins: The only shutout by the Penguins against the Ducks/Mighty Ducks franchise was a 3-0 win, Dec. 10, 1997. Tom Barrasso made 28 saves while Jaromir Jagr scored two goals.

Best Ducks YouTube Video We Could Find: This will probably be the last time we get to see the dazzling scoring abilities of Teemu Selanne in Pittsburgh. He has said he will retire after this season:

Notes:

-Marc-Andre Fleury (10-6-0, 2.52 GAA, .904 SV%) and Jonas HIller (6-7-1, 3.03 GAA, .910 SV%) your expected starters in net.

-For the Penguins, Alex Goligoski (undisclosed) is questionable. Forwards Tyler Kennedy (groin), Chris Kunitz ("lower body") and Brooks Orpik (undisclosed) are out. Defensemen Sergei Gonchar (wrist), Kris Letang (shoulder) and forward Maxime Talbot (shoulder) are out. Did we miss anyone?

-For the Ducks, forward and noted Penguin killer Saku Koivu ("lower body") is day-to-day.

-0 for 29.

-Ruslan Fedotenko worked well with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin Saturday. (PG+)

-Ducks general manager Bob Murry has been pretty critical of his unerachieving team.

-Getzlaf leads the NHL with 20 assists.

-Ducks enforcer and Washington, Pa. native George Parros is on a homecoming tour.

-Don't boo Ryan Whitney. He didn't steal money from you. He didn't cut in front of you at lunch counter. He didn't key your car door. He just played cruddy defense in front of his own net from time to time. He was was a productive member of the franchise and helped it get to a Stanley Cup final. A polite applause is the least you can offer.

-The Penguins will wear their not-so-dreaded blue throwback uniforms tonight.

-Assuming they don't advance to the Stanley Cup Final, this will be the Mighty Ducks/Ducks' final game in Mellon Arena. All-time, they have a 2-7-2 record in Mellon Arena.

-Cheap Tickets Alert: Tonight is a Student Rush night.

-We can't resist emo-bangs Kunitz:

-Our live blog begins at approximately 6:30 p.m. Please tune in.

Quick yes/no question. If Tangradi dresses for the nex Pens game against the Ducks (which will of course come next season), will he be listed in the "Ex-Ducks/Mighty Ducks on the Penguins" item?

I realize that the NHL modified the scheduling this year, but isn't it weird that we play a Pacific Division opponent 3 times in one season?

Bones: they're only playing each other twice this season. Once @ Anaheim and this game @ Pgh...

Wow, I got my teams mixed up. Saw the hometown Wild play the Ducks at their home opener and  remembered it as the Pens playing the Wild. Gettin' old and confused...

Bones: I can understand that.  I went and saw the Pens @ Ducks in CA, then just saw the Ducks @ Blue Jackets on Friday...

AlexandreGiesbrecht  Yes. We extend the "ex-whatever" designation to prospects and such.

Props to you for the Ryan Whitney comment, Seth.  I wasn't aware he was getting boos from Pens' fans, but if he is, it's certainly not deserved.  Yeah he was pretty iffy the entire time he had come back after his injury, but then again, we didn't win the Cup with Armstrong or Malone either and a good amount of us still like those guys.

It's not like he left because he thought we weren't good enough and then totally stunk it up in the playoffs without playing on a line with Sidney Crosby or something...

That said, we're getting to a point where I wouldn't mind seeing him back on our blue line.  Our defensemen are dropping like they're stock on Wall Street.
