Bruins at Penguins - First Period - 11-14-09

FIRST PERIOD

20:00: Jordan Staal starts on a line with Bill Guerin and Chris Bourque.

19:45: Staal tosses a wrister on net from the left wing. Thomas pushes it away.

19:10: Byron Bitz pushes the puck up the right wing, twists Mark Eaton around and puts a backhander on net. Johnson holds it out.

19:02: Malkin takes the ice with Sidney Crosby and Ruslan Fedotenko.

18:18: Jay McKee busting out some serious scoring touch. Wow! Where did that come from? Malkin chips the puck in from just inside the Boston blue line on the right wing to McKee streaking into the zone. McKee apparoches the net from the left faceoff circle, gets Derek Morris to drop down to block a potential pass then lifts a sweet backhander over the glove side of Thomas. Wow! Thomas looked like he totally didn't expect that. McKee punches the glass behind the net in celebration. Malkin and Fedotenko get assists. The "Hey Song" is busted out. It's McKee's first goal as a Penguin. Malkin's assist is the 100th of his NHL career. Penguins 1-0.

16:25: Bourque takes a pass from Staal on the left wing and rips a wrister. Thomas punches it away with a "thud."

14:49: Chara controls the puck at the right point and chucks a wrister towards the net. Daniel Paille is right in front and re-directs it wide.

14:36: Brad Marchand snaps off a wrister from the slot. Johnson boots it out.

14:21: Martin Skoula gets dumped behind the Penguins' net by Krejci. No call.

13:18: Deryk Engelland shows off part of his game which not a lot of Penguins fans might be aware of. Off a faceoff, he drops the gloves with Bitz. They lock up, wrestle around a bit and Engelland gets a few lefts in before they fall to the ice. We'll give Engelland the slight decision on that one.

13:07: Fedotenko takes a pass on the left wing and chops a shot on net. Thomas fights it off.

12:32: Patrice Bergeron snaps off a wrister from the slot. Johnson fights it off.

12:16: McKee hammers a one-timer from the left point far and wide of the net.

11:43: Michael Ryder chops at a deflected shot on net from the crease. Johnson falls to his stomach and hugs the puck preventing a rebound.

11:31: Krejci controls the puck behind the net and draws Eaton and Alex Goligoski back towards himself. That leaves Blake Wheeler all alone to the left of the net. Johnson doesn't locate him and is unprepared for the shot. Wheeler is able to bang it off Johnson's left skate and into the net. Heck of a job by Krejci to drawing to defenders towards himself. Krejci and Matt Hunwick get assists. Bruins 1, Penguins 1.

11:14: Eric Godard tosseas a shot on net from a tough angle on the right wing. Thomas kicks it out.

9:52: Crosby steaks up the left wing on a partial two one one with Malkin. The passing lane is taken away and Crosby takes the shot. Thomas says no.

9:27: Guerin puts a wrister on net from a tough angle on the right wing. Thomas stops it with his chest.

8:48: Marchand is nabbed for holding the stick of Goligoski. Kind of funny moment as the official held his arm up. Thomas actually skated out of his crease as if his team had the delayed penalty. Crosby, Malkin, Goligoski, Fedotenko and Gueirn take the ice. Fedotenko is on the point with Goligoski.

7:27: Crosby controls the puck behind the Boston net and dishes a quick pass to Malkin in the left faceoff circle. Malkin gets off a quicker wrister. Thomas is able to boot it out.

6:34: Craig Adams came flying back on a backcheck and tried to light up someone in a white jersey. That Bruin braces for the hit and sends Adams spinning in the air and into the boards. Adams is a little slow to recover. That was almost similar to Malkin's hit on Alex Ovechkin a few seasons ago:

5:41: Recchi and a few other Bruins tries to poke in a puck with Johnson sprawled out. A Penguins defender is able to drop to his knees and hold out Recchi's attempts.

5:15: Malkin zips a cross ice pass from the right wing to Fedotenko on the left wing. Fedotenko has a fairly clean shot but can't handle the pass cleanly and fails to even get a shot off.

4:07: Off a faceoff win by Letestu, Cooke

3:36: Ben Lovejoy controls the puck at the right point and whips it on net. Cooke is right in front of Thomas and stops the puck. As Mark Stuart shoves Cooke into Thomas, Pascal Dupuis is able to jump on the loose puck, move to his left and lift a wrister over Thomas on the stick side. What a marvelous dirty goal. Great effort by Cooke to really just cause all kinds of havoc in front. Cooke and Lovejoy get assists. The "Hey Song" is played. Penguins 2-1.

2:52: Bourque dishes a backhanded pass from behind the net to Staal coming in from the left wing. Staal snaps off a shot which Thomas fights off.

1:45: Bergeron dishes a pass to Morris at the right point. Morris hammers a slapper. Johnson is able to glove sit despite some interference by Recchi.

0:22: Malkin chops a shot on net which hops up and is gloves by Thomas. Malkin's stick actually broke on the shot as it was chopped in half by Begin. That's two minutes for slashing. Malkin, Crosby, Guerin, Fedotenko and Goliogski take the ice.

0:00: End of period. Penguins 2, Bruins 1.

FIRST INTERMISSION

-We're not sure if it's the addition of Malkin or the surprising start of Johnson, but the Penguins have a lot more step and a lot more purpose tonight. They are far more aggressive and almost seem more confident when they attack the offensive zone.

-So far so good for Malkin. He doesn't seem to be dealing laboring with any ailment.

-Johnson has been strong so far.

-Each team was pretty aggressive that period. Hopefully for entertaiment's sake, it continues.

-We already have 30 shots on goal. Each team has 15.

-Marco Sturm leads the game with three.

-Staal, Guerin and McKee lead the Penguins with two each.

-Goligoski leads the game with a huge 10:05 of ice time.

-Dennis Wideman leads the Bruins with 8:20.

-The Bruins have a 10-7 lead in faceoffs (59 percent).

-Bergeron, one of the best faceoff specialist in the league, is 5 for 5 (100 percent).

-Staal is 2 for 4 (50 percent).

-Lovejoy leads the game with two blocked shots.

-Click here for the second period.

Agreed on Guerin. It's not like I was expecting a 40 goal season out of the guy, but he's just not bringing a whole lot to the table right now.
