Empty Netter Assists - 11-11-09

Penguins

-Shelly Anderson's recap from last night's game. "We generated some chances, and they did, too. They capitalized." - Sidney Crosby (above) on the Bruins.

-The Boston Globe's recap. "You always wonder what’s going to happen next - whether we’re going to score another goal, they’re going to score, or what’s going to happen." - Bruins defenseman Matt Hunwick on his goal which was initally waved off by officials.

-The Boston Herald's recap. The Bruins have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

-The Associated Press' recap. "It won’t be very long he’ll be in it, I know that." - Bruins forward and former Penguin Mark Recchi on the five-game pointless streak of Crosby.

-NHL.com's recap. The Penguins haven't scored a goal in 149:09.

-Highlights (so to speak) from EN contributor GhostWalker40:

-Sidney Crosby, Matt Cooke and Alex Goligoski speak:

-Crosby did little to dispel his reputation as a pouty-faced brat last night:

-Boston's Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron did a good job shutting down Sidney Crosby.

-We don't want to be mean, but Matt Cooke's teeth are a disaster:

-Cooke did deny Bill McCreary's accusations of eating his Buffalo wings:

-Boston's Tim Thomas had trouble locating the puck underneath his left leg:

-Chris Bourque and Boston's David Krejci crashing Marc-Andre Fleury's crease:

-Recchi recorded his 900th career assist. Fire Ray Shero.

-Happy times for Recchi (left) and teammate Daniel Paille:

-FIre Ray Shero.

-Evgeni Malkin described his shoulder injury as "day to day."

-Malkin speaks:

-How does Mellon Arena compare to some older classic arenas like Boston Garden?

-"They’re not only talented, but they’re driven, good leaders." - Tom Fitzgerald, assistant to Ray Shero, on Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal.

-Bruce Ciskie of Fanhouse takes a look at Pengins prospect Carl Sneep.

-They might not be scoring too many goals this season, but the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' aren't giving up too many either.

-If you can find a better Norwegian interview with former Penguins forward Rene Corbet, be our guest:

-Corbet currently plays for the Frisk Tigers in Norway.

Atlantic Division

-Islanders forward Kyle Okposo is the lastest NHLer to be diagnosed with swine flu.

-More bad news for the Islanders. Captain Doug Weight is out four to six weeks due to an "upper-body" injury.

-The Devils players actually "snuck" up from New Jersey to attend team overlord Lou Lamoriello's Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Toronto.

-Injured Flyers forwards Daniel Briere (right leg) and James van Riemsdyk (left pinkie) could return for Thursday's game against the Senators.

-To say the least, Flyers forward and former Penguins prospect Daniel Carcillo has a few issues with discipline.

-Tyler Arnason, who had started this season with the Rangers' AHL affiliate in Hartford, joined Dinamo Riga of the KHL.

Northeast Division

-Shootout goals by former Penguin Alex Kovalev and Jason Spezza gave the Senators a 4-3 win against the Oilers. Fire Craig Patrick. Pascal Leclaire (above, stopping Edmonton's Dustin Penner) made 31 saves in the win. Steve Staios led Edmonton with two assists.

-Check out the smooth moves by Spezza for his shootout goal:

-Ottawa's Nick Foligno went upstairs on this goal against Edmonton's Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers:

-Ottawa's Mike Fisher apparently cares not for the vision of Edmonton's Lubomir Visnovsky:

-Sabres forward Adam Mair cleared waivers.

-The great Mike Zigomanis, a member of last season's Penguins' team, has joined Djurgarden in Sweden. Zigomanis had been playing for the Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate in Toronto this season.

-Maple Leafs overlord Brian Burke has lobbied NHL commissioner Gary Bettman about bringing an outdoor game to Toronto. Bettman responding by asking "Where's Toronto?" while checking the want ads in Phoenix on Craigslist. We think.

-The must do a pregame ceremony before every Maple Leafs game. This one was worthwhile. before last night's Wild-Maple Leafs game, Remembrance Day, Canada's version of Veterans Day, several Canadian veterans were honored honoured:

-Canadian veteran Charles Klein sported some serious medals:

-The Maple Leafs pay their respects:

Southeast Division

-Thrashers captain Ilya Kovalchuk has resumed practicing for the first time since breaking his right foot Oct. 24.

-The Panthers claimed tough guy Steve MacIntyre off waivers from the Oilers.

-The Lightning put forward Drew Miller on waivers.

-One year later, things are a lot different with Rick Tocchet coaching the Lightning instead of Barry Melrose.

-The Capitals only recalled Mathieu Perreault from Hershey of the AHL as an injury replacement. So far, he has three points in three games in the NHL.

Central Division

-David Perron's (above) first career hat trick helped the Blues rout the Canucks, 6-1. Brad Boyes contributed a goal and three assists while Andy McDonald had a goal and two assists. Chris Mason made 22 saves in the win.

-Vancouver's Tanner Glass and St. Louis' Cam Janssen pounded the daylights out of each other:

-Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock will become the 16th coach to appear in 1,000 career games tonight.

-The Syracuse Crunch, the Blue Jackets' AHL affiliate, will host the Binghamton Senators, Ottawa's AHL affiliate, in an outdoor game Feb. 20 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. It will be the AHL's first outdoor game.

(Kudos to Bethany's Hockey Rants for the find.)

-Is Blues coach Andy Murray on the hot seat?

-After missing 29 games last season due to various injuries, Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom has been healthy this season and he's been scoring too.

Northwest Division

-Mikka Kiprusoff (above) made 25 saves and led the Flames to a 1-0 shutout win at Montreal. Calgary captain Jarome Iginla, who has scored in four consecutive games, scored the game's only goal. Jaroslav Halak made 30 saves for the Canadiens.

-Check out the sweet throw bax "Christmasy" jerseys Jay Leach and the Canadiens wore:

-Those seriously look like they should only be worn during Christmas. Kind of like how Cadbury Eggs are only available around Easter.

-The Canadiens extended a losing streak in those jerseys to four games. Granted, the last loss was 99 years ago, but still...

-Montreal's Max Pacioretty cared not for the wet willy attempts of Calgary's Adam Pardy and Mark Giordano:

-Montreal's Mike Cammalleri had issues with his former Calgary teammate, Dion Phaneuf:

-Calgary's David Moss and Montreal's Josh Gorges had trouble finding this puck:

-Mikko Koivu had a goal and two assists and led the Wild to its first ever win in Toronto, 5-2. Teammate Marek Zidlicky added a goal and an assist while Niklas Backstrom made 37 saves in the win. Tomas Kaberle led the Maple Leafs with two assists.

-Backstrom's win was the 100th of his NHL career.

-Toronto's Jonas Gustavsson reached back on this save attempt:

-Gustavsson during a moment of his own:

-Maple Leafs players can't believe: A.) Minnesota's Owen Nolan still plays. B.) Someone still sports a soul patch in this day and age. C.) Both:

-Toronto goon Colton Orr and his Minnesota counterpoint Derek Boogaard had a meeting of the minds:

-With Roberto Luongo healthy, the Canucks demoted goaltender Cory Schneider to Manitoba of the AHL.

-Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk is still dealing with a back injury.

Pacific Division

-A goal by Dan Boyle with one minute left in regulation gave the Sharks a 4-3 win against the Predators. Boyle and teammate Joe Pavelski each had a goal and an assist. Thomas Greiss (above) made 23 saves in the win.

-We spotted this in the aftermath of Boyle's goal last night. It's the back of Predators goaltender Dan Ellis' mask:

-Are those Care Bears?

-Happy times for San Jose's Devin Setoguchi:

-Not so happy times for Setoguchi:

-The Sharks demoted forward Torrey Mitchell to Worcester of the AHL.

"You get a guy like (Jonas Hiller) that's going to be a free agent at the end of the year and myself, making the money I'm making, either I'm leaving or he's leaving." - Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere mouthing off about becoming the back-up goaltender to Jonas Hiller.

-Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere went off about his situa

-The top ten upsets in all of hockey this decade.

-Meet the KHL's version of Detroit. And we're not talking about the Red Wings.

-Non-Hockey Note of the Day: Happy Veterans Day:

-If you have HBO, please do yourself a favor and watch "Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery" tonight at 7:30 p.m. Chances are, you'll gain a whole new perspective on the sacrifices of those in uniform as well as their families.

Here's a close up of the back of Ellis's mask: ingoalmag.com/.../dan-ellis-2009-2010-nashville-predators-mask

Does he perhaps have a son with a first inital of 'K' and a daughter on the way?
