Today in misleading NHL advertising - 11-03-09

When you go to the NHL's web site, all of that day's games are listed at the top of the page. And when a game is actually going on at that exact moment, they always put this bold red "WATCH LIVE" underneath that game. The indication is, you can watch the game through GameCener Live, the league's online video package:

Awesome! You can watch the Red Wing and Boston, two original six teams with pretty stacked rosters! Right?

Hmmm.... not quite....

You get a disappointing message stating:

"Watch this game LIVE on TV

US - Check Versus, NBC, or the NHL Network

Canada - Check CBC, TSN, or RDS

Or - Check your Local Regional Sports Network (Fox, NESN, CSN, MSG)
"

Basically, this game is on Versus in the United States so it's not available on GameCenter Live. And while the message on the front of the league's Web site doesn't specifically state is it available through GameCenter, it's heavily implied.

Maybe we're being a little too fuddy-duddy about this, but the NHL shouldn't do this. It's very misleading. Put a red "VERSUS" or "NHL Network" underneath the game. Don't mislead fans into thinking they can watch the game through GameCenter.

THANK YOU SETH!

Finally, someone besides me read the small print... I've e-mailed my displeasure to NHL.com over this.  I work for Directv (Sorry!) and am just sick over the Versus issue.  I think during the next TV contract the NHL should reserve some exclusive distrubition rights, like the NFL does with the 'sunday ticket' pkg.

lol_bp,

Just curious. Where are you watching from? Your screen capture seems to indicate you are in Europe.

There you go. If you have an IP address outside the United States, you're going to get the game.

The NHL should not have to stoop to cheap bait and switch tactics.  Just tell us where the game is!

I mean, what do they really gain by tricking people onto that page?  Besides another ticked of hockey fan?
