Malkin down with shoulder injury - 10-29-09

Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin will be out of the lineup "a couple weeks" due to a strained right shoulder. According to coach Dan Bylsma, Malkin had been playing with the injury for some time and is being taken out of the lineup as a precautionary measure.

Malkin is second on the team in scoring this seson with 14 points (four goals, 10 assists). He does currently have the longest consecutive games streak on the team with 254 games, having not missed a contest since sitting out the first four games of his rookie yelear due to a left shoulder injury. Jordan Staal has the second longest streak at 232 games.

No word yet on any potential call-ups from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

EN Says: This team has found away to fight on despite losing Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury, Sergei Gonchar and countless others for extended periods of time. Now, it will be without arguably its most valuable player.

A lot has been made of how this team has been almost machine-like this season in that it has gotten contributions from just about everyone in the lineup. And how a lot of the parts are interchangeable. Well this is the biggest gear in that machine. And it's hardly irreplaceable.

We're not calling for gloom and doom for this team, but don't expect too many easy wins for time being while Gonchar and Malkin are each on the mend. Those are two very important players on the sidelines.

We're not sure what Bylsma has in mind in regards to line combinations, but we have to imagine Jordan Staal gets bumped up to the second line in place of Malkin. There's constant talk about how he's a No. 2 or even No. 1 center on just about every other team in the league. Well, he's a No. 2 center as of today.

GEEZ, what or who's next? Any word on when he was injured, how long has he been trying to play thru it, who's the punk who hit him, SOB.....if there's gonna be injuries, best to have them at the beginning of the season then at the end? It will be tough but we'll make it, now CROSBY has to step up his game more, & MAF you too,

Missing Geno, Gonch, and Talbot is a big bite out of the Pens lineup. Would be a huge problem if late in the season and/or playoffs. Early season for a couple weeks not as much.

Pens depth will help them tread water until we get Geno back. Then Gonch and Talbot soon thereafter.

Considering Malkin's linemates this year, wouldn't it make more sense to keep Staal with Cooke and Kennedy and just consider that that No. 2 line now? What wingers are better: Cooke and Kennedy or Dupuis and Fedotenko?

Kennedy's out for at least another game, so that's not really an option for now.

I was making the comment assuming Kennedy should be back soon. When TK is back, that line should be reunited.

good thing they built up a good bunch of points already...even if they have a bad couple of weeks here, they should be more than able to recover.  Still, with Crosby, Staal, Fluery, and co, I still think they'll hold their own while Malkin sits out a few.

my fantasy team is really taking hits.  Datsyk, Kovalchuck, and now Malkin.  yeesh.

@KK--- I agree.

@BuBey --- So, what you're saying is, this is all your fault?  :)

It figures this happens a week before I will be seeing them in person for the only time this year in L.A.

@BobaFett - Could be worse.  They don't come to Chicago at all this year, and the only game I could be in Pittsburgh for was the Phoenix game where they stunk up the joint.
