Empty Netter Assists - 10-15-09

Penguins

-Dave Molinari's recap from last night's game. Chris Kunitz (above, with Carolina's Cam Ward) won the game and he still doesn't have a real goal this season.

-The Raleigh News and Observer's recap. Even if they lost, the Hurricanes might've played their best game.

-The Associated Press' recap. The Penguins might be better on the road than they are at home.

-NHL.com's recap. "We were 4-0 on this road trip, but the reality of it was we weren't perfect by any stretch." - Mike Rupp.

-The Hurricanes' replacement of Ray Whitney for Sergei Samsonov on the top line led to Carolina's third period surge.

-Carolina seemed awfully satisfied with its effort.

-Highlights courtesy of EN contributor GhostWalker40:

-Cam Ward's save deserve its own clip:

-The Penguins' first line of Chris Kunitz, Sidney Crosby and Bill Guerin speak:

-What are Jordan Staal's chances at becoming an all-star?

-"They were just better than we were." - Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice explaining why his team was swept by the Penguins in last seasons' Eastern Conference final.

-Maxime Talbot talks about his day with the Stanley Cup:

Atlantic Division

-And the Rangers keep pace with the Penguins. Vaclav Prospal had two goals, including the 200th of his career, and an assist for New York in a 4-2 defeat of the Kings. Michael Del Zotto and Ales Kotalik each added two assists for the Rangers while Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves in the win. The Rangers have won six consecutive games after opening the season with a loss at Mellon Arena.

-Akward Photo of the Night: Rangers Chris Higgins and Henrik Lundqvist having an impromtu meeting about their fantasy football league:

-Vaclav Prospal celebrating with one Rangers fan and eight Wall Street executives:

-Referee Dan O'Halloran apparently turned into a zombie during the game and tried to eat Henrik Lundqvist's brains:

-King Henrik surviving the attack and saluting all those businessmen:

-In a bit of poetic justice, Rangers forward Brian Boyle scored the winning goal against his former team which dumped him in the offseason:

-The irony obviously upset Kings defenseman Sean O'Donnell so much he just had to fight Rangers forward Aaron Voros.

-So far so good for Marian Gaborik in New York. The forward has scored a point in all seven of his games this season.

-All of Gaborik's six goals this season have been scored in the third period.

-Check out this little bit of acting by Sean Avery after a slash by Los Angeles' Jarret Stoll:

-We don't deny that was clearly a slash, but it's amazing how Avery was able to get the shot off then react in "pain," huh?

-Islanders forward Josh Bailey would've fit in well with the Penguins' power play last season. He's not shooting the puck.

-According to the Long Island Press, Islanders owner Charles Wang has abandoned the Lighthouse Project, a proposal which would renovate Nassau Coliseum and develop much of the property surrounding the Islanders' home venue.

-Just keep this in mind Islanders fans. Mario Lemieux and other Penguins officials made trips to Kansas City and Las Vegas when they threatened to move the Penguins. A lot of this could just be, and probably is, posturing to get a deal done.

-Flyers defenseman compared the Los Angeles and Philadelphia hockey markets. For example, In L.A., they only riot when the Lakers win a championship. In Philly, they riot when the sun comes up.

-Devils coach Jacques Lemaire still wants to give forward Patrik Elias (right), a winger by trade, a try at center whenever he returns from his groin injury.

Northeast Division

-After initally saying Thomas Vanek could be out "weeks" due to an "upper-body" injury, Sabres coach Lindy Ruff downplayed his diagnosis and suggested his star forward could return to the lineup by this weekend.

-Two weeks into the season and Montreal is finally having its home opener tonight.

-Check out Canadiens goaltender Carey Price's new lid.

-Bruins defenseman Dennis Wideman is dealing with a shoulder ailment.

-Senators forward and former Penguin Alex Kovalev is apparently a male model now.

-"Milan is making me a better player." - Senators forward Jason Spezza on the play of new forward Milan Michalek, a player Ottawa acquired from San Jose in the Dany Heatley trade.

-"When you're 0-6, you should be grateful they're still coming to the games." Maple Leafs overlord Brian Burke on his team's poor start.

Southeast Division

-The Thrashers will not return forward Evander Kane (right), the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, to his junior team.

-The Capitals took their season-ticket holders to Six Flags America. We assume they sold their places in line to Penguins fans.

-Washington defenseman Mike Green lost 29 pounds in the offseason.

-Former Penguins foward Dominic Moore was finally given clearance to practice with the Panthers. A work visa problem didn't allow him to fully join the organization.

-The Lightning has scored 15 goals so far this season. The line of former Penguins forward Ryan Malone, Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis has produced 11 of them. Fire Ray Shero.

-Tampa Bay defenseman Kurtis Foster is expected to return to his team's lineup tonight after missing a few games due to a "lower-body" injury.

Central Division

-A goal and an assist from Patrick Sharp helped the Blackhawks edge the Oilers, 4-3. Brian Campbell and Jonathan Toews each added two assists for Chicago. Edmonton's Nikolai Khabibulin made 34 saves in the loss to his former team.

-The Blackhawks once again recalled forward Jack Skille (right) from Rockford for the AHL. It is the fifth consecutive day he's been shuffled between Chicago and Rockford. The Blackhawks, who had a rough offseason, keep moving Skille around due to salary cap concerns.

-The Blackhawks and Bears are combining forces on a marketing campaign.

-Blue Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda is expected to be out of the lineup four to six weeks due to a sprained left knee.

-Is a 2-3-0 start a reason to panic in Detroit?

-Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk ("upper-body") and defenseman Niklas Kronwall (leg) are a little dinged up.

-Detroit forward Johan Franzen (right), sidelined for at least four months due to a knee injury, is still holding out hope to play for Sweden in the 2010 Olympics.

Northwest Division

-The Canucks recalled forward Michael Grabner, a first-round pick in 2006, from Manitoba of the AHL and are sticking him on the first line with Henrik Sedin and Alex Burrows.

-A right shoulder injury will sideline Avalanche defenseman John-MIchael Liles for two weeks.

-Former Flames forward Theo Fleury accused the NHL of allowing him to play in games despite failing 13 separate drug tests. The NHL said it wasn't true.

-Fleury announced he will file a complaint of sexual abuse against former junior coach Graham James.

-Just what the Wild needs. Another injury. Forward Martin Havlat suffered a groin injury last night.

Pacific Division

-Marty Turco made 29 saves and led the Stars to a 6-0 shutout out of the Predators. Loui Eriksson paced Dallas with two goals and an assist while Brad Richards added a goal and two assists. Captain Brenden Morrow (above, with Jamie Benn) added two goals.

-Second Awkward Photo of the Night: Dallas' Trevor Daley and Nashville's Martin Erat:

-Two goals from Corey Perry helped the Ducks edge the Wild, 3-2. Jonas Hiller made 32 saves in the win. Eric Belanger led the Wild with a goal and an assist.

-This is kind of a dud of a fight, but check out what Anaheim's Evgeny Artyukhin does to the helmet of Minnesota's Shane Hnidy at the 40 second mark:

-Cool photo of the fight:

-Hnidy looks like he's hanging on for dear life.

-With Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski down due to a shoulder injury, captain Scott Niedermayer and former Penguin Ryan Whitney are picking up the bulk of his minutes on Anaheim's blue line.

-Wisniewski sort of accused Flyers forward Daniel Briere of a dirty hit that led to his injury. A Flyer?!? Giving out a dirty hit?!?! Bite your tongue!

-Awesome Photo of the Night: Los Angeles' Erik Ersberg in the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden:

-The Coyotes demoted forward Mikkel Boedker, a first-round pick in 2008, to San Antonio of the AHL.

-Should the Coyotes give up the White Out out of respect to the fans of the former Winnipeg Jets?

-Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes is still proceeding with his antitrust lawsuit against the NHL.

-Even though he's only 22, Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic has the fourth-longest tenure of anyone on his team's roster.

Patrick Division

-IIHF president Rene Fasel took NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to task for his lack of support in allowing NHL players to play in the 2014 Olympics.

-A few of you have alerted us to this. Check out this kid's shootout move:

-Happy 98th birthday to former Pittsburgh Hornets defenseman Jack Howard.

-Today would've been the 75th birthday of former Pittsburgh Hornets forward Hank Ciesla.

-Happy 74th birthday to former Bruins forward Willie O'Ree. In 1957, O'Ree became the first black player in NHL history.

Best comment ever on the gore

Mike Greene lost 29 pounds over the off season what did he do take off his giant ghetto gold #52 necklace?

Sean Avery faking an injury?

never thought I would see the day that he would do anything to dishonor the sport

I talked to a friend of mine that lives up on Long Island he said the Long Island press isn't the most reputable newspaper he described it to me and told me to imagine if smitzik had his own paper

Re: Islanders' and the apparent collapse of the Lighthouse Project: do not discount the possibility that Charles Wang is NOT posturing.  He may not be looking at Kansas City, Las Vegas, or even Seattle or Houston, but he does have a genuinely viable and much less controversial alternative: the new arena that the NBA's Nets are building in Brooklyn.  One of those new-money Russian tycoons just bought a share of the Nets to help the arena project go ahead, and they may be interested in having a tenant to fill dates in the arena.  Since he is already in the NY area, they may not have to indemnify the Rangers.  Stay tuned on this one.
