Atlantic Division
-A goal and an assist from Travis Zajac helped the Devils claim a 3-2 win against the Panthers. Teammate Brian Rolston recorded two assists.
-The Devils officially terminated the contract of forward Brendan Shanahan. Shanahan becomes an unrestricted free agent and his $1 million salary cap hit is officially off the books.
-The Islanders put forward Trent Hunter on injured reserve due to a chest ailment and recalled forward Joel Rechlicz from Bridgeport of the AHL.
-Islanders captain Doug Weight re-aggravated a groin injury.
-Islanders goaltender Dwayne Roloson either made a save with his stomach last night or he started to collapse into himself like a neutron star:

-Rangers forward Sean Avery is expected to return to the lineup from a knee injury today against the Ducks.
Northeast Division
-Shootout goals by Blake Wheelers and Marc Savard gave the Bruins a 4-3 win against the Islanders. Matt Hunwick had a goal and an assist in regulation for Boston while Tuuka Rask made 35 saves in the win. John Tavares led New York with a goal and an assist.
-Mike Fisher had a goal and an assist for the Senators in a 4-2 defeat of the Thrashers. Teammates Alexandre Picard recorded two assists while former Penguins Alex Kovalev and Jarkko Ruutu each scored goals for Ottawa. Fire Craig Patrick and Ray Shero.
-Ryan Miller made 25 saves in the Sabres' 1-0 shutout win at Nashville. Pekke Rinne took the loss despite making 41 saves.
-Sabres defenseman Andrej Sekera suffered an undisclosed injury last night.
-Senators goaltender Brian Elliott is sporting a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme on his new mask.
-The Canadiens' last win in Western Canada was the 2003 Heritage Classic played outside in Edmonton.

Southeast Division
-Former Penguins forward Ryan Malone had a hat trick and led the Lightning to a 5-2 win against the Hurricanes. Fire Ray Shero. Teammate Paul Ranger contributed a goal and an assist while Mattias Ohlund and Martin St. Louis each recorded two assists.
-"He's one of our leaders. He does the dirty work that goes unnoticed." - Lightning forward Steven Stamkos on Malone.
-Tampa Bay goaltender Mike Smith is dealing with a back injury.
-Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen is still bothered by his wonky knee.
-The Capitals are having discipline issues.
Central Division

-Former Penguins goaltender Mathieu Garon (above) made 32 saves for the Blue Jackets in a 2-0 win at Phoenix. Fire Ray Shero.
-Shootout goals by Jonathan Toews, Kris Versteeg, Tomas Kopecky and Andrew Ladd gave the Blackhawks a 4-3 win against the Avalanche. Versteeg had two assists. Kyle Quincey led Colorado with two assists of his own.
-With their home opener, the Blackhawks did this really cool thing where they had former players Stan Mikita (No. 21), Bobby Hull (No. 9), Tony Esposito (No. 35) and Denis Savard (No. 18) take part in the pregame introductions in full gear:

-Two saves from Valtteri Filppula helped the Red Wings claim a 3-2 win against the Capitals. Washington has lost three consecutive games.
-The Blackhawks recalled forward Jack Skille from Rockford of the AHL and lost forward Radek Smolenak through waivers to the Lightning. Chicago had originally claimed Smolenak off waivers from Tampa Bay in the preseason.
-The Blues recalled defenseman Tyson Strachan from Peoria of the AHL.
-St. Louis is 0-2 so far in North America this season.

Northwest Division
-Nikolai Khabibulin made 33 saves for the Oilers in a 3-2 win against the Canadiens. Montreal has lost three consecutive games.
-Oilers defenseman Sheldon Souray is still dealing with a head injury.
-The Wild saw forward Cal Clutterbuck (ankle) and former Penguin Petr Sykora (groin) suffer injuries last night.
-The Canucks recalled forward Guillaume Desbiens from Manitoba of the AHL.
-Despite being 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, Canucks forward Rick Rypien likes throwing down with the big boys.
-The Flames demoted forward Jason Jaffay to Abbotsford of the AHL.
Pacific Division

-Teemu Selanne's shootout goal gave the Ducks a 3-2 win at Philadelphia. Selanne had two goals in regulation, including one with 16 seconds left in the third period, while Jonas Hiller (above) made 33 saves for the win.

-Two goals and an assist by Patrick Marleau helped the Sharks claim a 4-2 win against the Wild. Evgeni Nabokov made 38 saves in the win.
-Jonathan Quick made 29 saves for the Kings in a 2-1 win at St. Louis.
-The Coyotes did their white out thing for their home opener:

Smythe Division
-A series of e-mails revealed that NHL discipline czar Colin Campbell targeted former on-ice official Dean Warren for dismissal.
-The mayor of Quebec City met with Gary Bettman about the possibility of the NHL returning to the home of the Nordiques.
-The Robert Morris men's hockey team defeated Queens, 3-2, in an exhibition game.
-Robert Morris' women's hockey team fell to Northeastern, 4-0.
