Empty Netter Assists - 10-05-09

Penguins

-How much upside does Chris Bourque have?

-Can the Penguins make Bill Guerin (above) an alternate captain?

-In its time, Mellon Arena was cutting edge.

-Can the Islanders find inspiration in the Penguins' past problems with securing a new arena?

-A few photos from EN readers from over the weekend. Kelli Zappas sends us this... well... it's a jersey foul for sure. But we would classify it more in the area of being a life foul:

-Tim Wallace and Matthew Barnaby not impressed.

-From EN reader Jason Long comes this jersey foul:

-From Gregg Thomas, Maxime Talbot getting one last touch with the Stanley Cup:

And an Ogie Oglethorpe jersey:

-Happy 44th birthday to the greatest athlete in Pittsburgh sports history.

-Happy 77th birthday to former all-star Penguins forward Dean Prentice. Prentice was the leading scorer on the 1969-70 team with 51 points (26 goals, 25 assists).

-Happy 43rd birthday to former Penguins defenseman Fredrik Olausson. Olausson had the secondary assist on the Penguins' final goal of the 1996-97 season.

-Happy 62nd birthday to former Penguins goaltender Gary Edwards. Edwards recorded the team's only shutout during the 1981-82 season.

Atlantic Division

-The Devils are going to be using U2's plane for some road trips. Insert "Elevation" joke here.

-Not surprisingly, rough and tough forward Ian Laperriere is fitting in well with the Flyers.

-The Rangers have little depth on their blue line.

-EN reader John-Paul McCormick offers this thought:

"Is it me, or does Philip Rivers look a heck of a lot like Sean Avery?"

Northeast Division

-The Canadiens recalled defenseman Yannick Weber from Hamilton of the AHL.

Southeast Division

-Former Penguins forward Dominic Moore agreed to a one-year contract with the Panthers worth $1.1 million.

-Hurricanes forward Erik Cole will be sidelined four to six weeks due to a broken left leg. This is how Cole was injured:

-Lightning defenseman Kurtis Foster is dealing with a "lower-body" injury.

-Alex Ovechkin's mom isn't thrilled with the prospect of her son not playing in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Central Division

-The Blackhawks demoted goaltender Corey Crawford to Rockford of the AHL.

Northwest DIvision

-Only in Vancouver would an October game against the Blue Jackets be considered a "must-win."

Pacific Division

-Stars forward Mike Modano is dealing with some sore ribs.

-As shocking as this might be to hear, Ducks defenseman and former Penguin Ryan Whitney was responsible for a shorthanded goal Saturday night by the Sharks.

-New Coyotes coach and former Penguins forward Dave Tippett is pretty much the antithesis of his predecessor, Wayne Gretzky.

-Kings captain Dustin Brown is dealing with a muscle strain in his butt.

Hi Seth!

Great job as always :)   Just a heads-up - the Hamilton Bulldogs are Montréal's farm team, not Chicago's.

Looks a million times more like Kyle Wellwood.

I thought the Wideman hit on Cole was pretty dirty, he clearly misses with the hip check so he extends his leg, just my thoughts though.

you never really know how bad something looks until someone takes a picture of your back at 7:30 on a Sunday morning while waiting in line to get your picture with the cup and posts it online :(

we are going jersey shopping tonight.

Not only is Modano still playing, but I see his name mentioned in every list of potential members of the U.S. Olympic Team.

I am so grateful we do not have to listen to knucklehead announcers like Jack Edwards on a regular basis. His picture has to be next to the words "homer" and "hyperbole" in the dictionary.

Just sayin

HPL, +1 for the heads up.

JG, I though it was just unfortunate more than anything. If you slow it down on the third replay, you'll see Wideman actually ends up hitting Cole with the back of his own leg. Wideman appeared to be going for a hip check. Cole cut inside and they hit legs. Not blaming Cole or Wideman for the hit. It's just something that tends to happen in a contact sport.

mikeyphi63, +1 for being brave enough to buy those jerseys.

Hexatron and DCFF, Modano could be at least a No. 2 winger on just about ever NHL team out there. He could be a No. 1 winger on the Penguins.

jdd40, I like Edwards simply because I think he's funny. He's so over the top. It's like watching wrestling.

missdaburgh, How do we know the Bulldogs didn't have a third jersey with their names on them? Huh? Maybe when they rolled into Charleston for that one game, they were wearing their third jerseys. So many questions.
