Empty Netter Assists - 9-4-09

Penguins

-Speaking of Zigmund Palffy, the former Penguin thinks Evgeni Malkin (above) is the most "comprehensive" player in the NHL.

-Remember when the Penguins weren't going to win ever again after losing Marian Hossa?

-James Mirtle dug up some interesting dirt on Jim Balsillie's courtship of the Penguins several years ago.

-The NHL seems to be rusty on its Pennsylvania geography.

-Former Penguins forward Mark Johnson, the son of former Penguins coach Bob Johnson and a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic men's hockey team, will coach the United States' women's hockey team in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

-Happy 45th birthday to former Penguins forward Tomas Sandstrom (right). Sandstrom's 155 points with the Penguins are the most by a Finnish-born player in franchise history.

-Happy 40th birthday to former Penguins forward Alex Hicks. Hicks had three game-winning goals for the 1996-97 Penguins. Only Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Petr Nedved had more.

Atlantic Division

-Because they seemingly can never resist over-the-hill, worthless players, it looks like the Rangers have brought in former Sharks defenseman Kyle McLaren as a non-roster invitee.

-Islanders defenseman Andy Sutton has had trouble staying healthy the past few seasons.

-New Flyers goaltender Ray Emery seems to think he's better than his predecessor, Martin Biron.

Northeast Division

-The Bruins are expected to award a contract extension to coach Claude Julien today.

Southeast Division

-The Thrashers will bring former Atlanta defenseman Mark Popovic, former Blues goaltender Manny Legace and former Wild forward Dan Fritsche to training camp as non-roster invitees.

-Despite being a free agent, defenseman Dennis Seidenberg has been working out with his former team, the Hurricanes.

-The Capitals outdrew the Redskins and Wizards in total attendance in 2008-09.

-Capitals defenseman Mike Green's bobblehead is a lot less lame than himself.

Central Division

-The Blues will bring former Penguins defenseman Darryl Sydor (right) and former Hurricanes forward Ryan Bayda to training camp as non-roster invitees.

-Blackhawks forward Ben Eager did some training with the Marines and managed not to assault someone.

-The Predators will unveil a third jersey later this month.

Northwest Division

-Former Islanders (and Predators, Blues, Coyotes, Blue Jackets, Senators, Panthers, Lightning, Flyers, Canucks, Mighty Ducks and Red Wings) forward Mike Sillinger joined the Oilers as director of player development.

-With goaltender Roberto Luongo locked up, the Canucks want to sign forward Ryan Kesler to a long-term deal.

Norris Division

-This whole NHLPA mess keeps getting uglier. Former Islanders goaltender Glenn Healey resigned as the NHLPA's director of player affairs.

-Red Wings hall-of-famer "Terrible" Ted Lindsay (right), one of the founders of the NHLPA, called the firing of Paul Kelly as head of the NHLPA a "scam job."

-The NHL is steering clear of this whole DirecTV-Versus tiff for the time being.

-The United States beat Canada, 4-2, in the women's Hockey Canada's Cup.

-You think the start of the NHL's season is coming up soon? The DEL in Germany begins play today.

-The ECHL announced its preseason schedule.

-Happy 81st birthday to former Pittsburgh Hornets defenseman Ray Gariepy.

I don't know if anyone saw this but as a recent grad of Robert Morris, I thought this was pretty cool.  Brianne McLaughlin was the goalie at RMU and was named a goalie on the US Women's Olympic team.  Here's the link from the RMU website.
