Empty Netter Assists - 9-2-09

Penguins

-Dmitry Chesnokov has a wonderful Q&A for Yahoo! with Evgeni Malkin (above) who took the Stanley Cup home to Magnitogorsk. And according to Malkin, the Penguins will celebrate with the Cup in the Capitals' backyard Sept. 9 at the White House.

-The Staals are brothers.

-Faceoff-Factor takes a look at Luca Caputi.

-It looks like KDKA-TV has some Penguins-friendly promos in the works:

-Eric Tangradi was among a group of NHL rookies who took part in Upper Deck's rookie card photo shoot:

-Happy 29th birthday to former Penguins goaltender Dany Sabourin. He is tied for 24th place on the franchise's all-time win list with 16.

-Happy 44th birthday to former Penguins forward Kevin Miller, a member of the 1995-96 Penguins team which fell to the Panthers in the Eastern Conference final. Miller appeared in all 18 of the Penguins playoff games and contributed five points (three goals, two assists). He is the brother of former Penguins forward/Jaromir Jagr caddy Kip and former Capitals forward Kelly.

-Happy 66th birthday to former Penguins forward and current Rangers general mangler manager Glen Sather (right). He appeared in all 76 games for the 1969-70 squad and in a bit of irony, was part of one of the worst trades in Rangers history as he was acquired from the Penguins in exchange for future all-star forward Syl Apps, Jr.

Atlantic Division

-How improtant is forward Marian Gaborik to the Rangers' fortunes?

-New Flyers goaltender Ray Emery beat up some kids. We think.

-Former Flyers forward Eric Chouinard has joined the Nuremberg Tigers of the DEL in Germany.

Northeast Division

-Sabres forward Adam Mair will miss the start of the season due to a hip ailment.

-Former Canadiens and Penguins forward Robert Lang is still an unrestricted free agent.

Southeast Division

-Today's example of excellent NHL ownership is brought to you by Lightning owner and former Penguins forward Len Barrie. It turns out he might've used some funny money to buy the Lightning.

-Former Hurricanes forward Ryan Bayda is still an unrestricted free agent.

Central Division

-The Blackhawks had better hope captain Jonathan Toews (right) is a better scorer than singer.

-New/old Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi is happy to be around a lot of old, gray-haired fellows such as himself.

-Speaking of old beat-up power forwards who wear the Winged Wheel, Tomas Holmstrom claims his wonky knees are healthy.

-The Red Wings have made long playoff runs the past three seasons. Will that wear them down for this season?

-The Predators re-signed restricted free agent forward Cal O'Reilly to a two-year, two-way deal.

Northwest Division

-Former Penguins goaltender Jocelyn Thibault (right) has been hired by the Avalanche as a goaltending consultant. Ironically enough, Thibault was sent to Montreal as part of a deal in exchange for franchise goaltender Patrick Roy back in 1995. Roy led Colorado to two Stanley Cup titles.

-Is defenseman Willie Mitchell the odd man out on the Canucks' suddenly inflated blue line?

Pacific Division

-How badly has disgruntled Senators forward Dany Heatley screwed things up with his whining? The Kings don't even want him.

-The Texas Stars, the AHL affiliated of the Dallas Stars, signed former Penguins forward Landon Wilson to a two-way AHL contract. He is officially the first player in the history of the franchise.

-The Sharks' training camp doesn't exactly sound like it will be all that pleasant.

Smythe Division

-Did Paul Kelly deserve to get fired as head of the NHLPA?

-Non-Hockey Note of the Day: Happy 40th birthday to the Internet.

Being down in FL-I'm not 100% in the loop on all things Penguins...do those KDKA commercials mean they are going to show some Pens games on 2?
