Matt Cooke cares not for poorly planned parades - 7-30-09

Peter Kooistra, the mayor of Stirling, Ont., must've been a newspaper editor somewhere along the line during his lifetime. Because his communication skills are... well... substandard.

You see, Stirling is the hometown of Penguins agitator Matt Cooke. As you can imagine, Stirlingers (Stirlingians?) were pretty excited about the prospect of their native son bringing the Stanley Cup home for a day.

Kooistra, perhaps sensing an easy way to score some much-needed points in the seedy world of Stirling politics hurriedly organized an epic parade and a day full of festivities to celebrate the success of arguably the city's second-most famous native (We'll give former Sabres goon Rob Ray the benefit of the doubt in that race. He had an ESPN commercial don't forget.)

There was only one problem with all these grand plans.

No one told Matt Cooke about it. And he ended up taking the Cup to Belleville, Ont. where he was born. Cooke told the Belleville Intelligencer:

"It's unfortunate but the Stirling mayor made all these plans without ever talking to me. I still haven't talked to him. I'm disappointed that people are getting the wrong impression about what happened."

Cooke ended up raising $5,000 for his charity, The Cooke Family Foundation of Hope, through his appearance with the Cup in Belleville, but that didn't mean anything to the spurned hearts of Stirling. A call-in radio station in Belleville was flooded with calls from Stirling natives who blamed Cooke for the mix-up.

No word yet on how Kris Draper managed to blame this on Sidney Crosby.

(Kudos to EN reader Leanne for the heads up.)

Nobody cares about what the Mayor of Stirling says but it was on the front page of the local newspaper the same week he said it right after the cup win. It's been on their website ever since.

He stiffed his hometown plain and simple and had to know Stirling expected to see the cup. His name is on signs coming into the village and there's a friggin' shrine to him in the rink. Forget the fact that he was born in Belleville. Everyone from a 30 mile radius is born in Belleville because that's where the hospital is. He was back in Stirling the day after he was born. The Belleville event was held at the grocery store his brother-in-law manages to raise money for the charity named after his wife's niece. Easy to figure out who wears the pants. The cup was even walked through the store so all his brother-in-law's employees could see it.

And he did bring the cup to Stirling to have a photo with the arena manager who gave him free ice time so all this talk about not enough time is BS too. The village has all of 1,800 people in it. A trip from one end to the other is 15 minutes tops and he was already in town so he could have taken a convertible ride and made everyone happy. He screwed up plain and simple. It's not every day you *** off an entire town for $5,000 and he would have made that in Stirling and more. Not that a guy making $1.2 million a year needs the money. How many people do you think will donate to his charity now.

Could you imagine Pittsburgh winning the cup and holding the parade in Philadelphia. Same difference.

Actually insideinfo...Cooke's name no longer appears on the signs entering Stirling.  Someone tore 'em down.

In regards to insideinfo's comment.  I myself am a Stirling native and find it very offensive that you paint us all with your negative comment.  The reality is Matt hasn't lived in Stirling for over 12 years now, he has a family and has moved all over the country.  I myself thought having a charily event in Belleville a central location was a great idea, no hard feeling felt at all.  We are proud of Matt and his Families accomplishments and wish him all the best.  Please stop giving Stirling a bad name. How dare you mention his wife and family at all. It was an outdoor event and we made the trip and thought it was amazing.  If you have a problem with Matt Cooke why don't you just tell him? Congrats to you Matt and your Family.  Thanks for bringing the cup to the area and raising money for charity when you really didn't have to.  For this we are proud of you.

If you're from Stirling insideinfo2 then you should know that Stirling is the most central location in the county, 14 miles from six different communities including Belleville. That's why it's called the Hub of Hastings. This whole mess is all about Matt's family and you should know that too.  He couldn't be bothered to stop at his parents house when he was in Stirling because he doesn't get along with them. He blew a perfect chance to reach out to them and make things right. Instead it was all about putting on a big show in a bigger city instead of thanking the community that gave him his start. Take your blinders off. Belleville is his wife's hometown, not his. That's why the event was held there.
