Thrashers re-sign Armstrong - 7-16-09

Let the rumors for next year's offseason begin.

The Thrashers re-signed restricted free agent forward Colby Armstrong (right) to a one year deal. He had a career year with 40 points (22 goals, 18 assists). His points and goals were each career highs.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. He will be an unrestricted free agent after next season.

The Thrashers acquired Armstrong from the Penguins in the 2007-08 season in a deal that brought Marian Hossa to Pittsburgh.

EN Says: We like Armstrong. We have no issue with him as a player or the idea of him returning to the Penguins. But the sentiment to bring him back near the trade deadline and next offseason will be more than overwhelming.

Count me in as one who would like to have him back!

Can someone please explain to me what the infatuation is with Armstrong?  He's a 3rd- or 4th-liner here, and we have plenty of those already.  If it's because he's Sid's buddy, well, Sid seems to be doing just fine without him.  If it's because he's a former first-round pick, why are we also not clamoring for Morosov or Kraft?  Seriously, the only thing he's ever done that's memorable for me is break Fedetenko's hand.

cessna: It's not what he's done but what he is.  Pittsburgh fans recognize Armstrong as a quality character and role player guy.  He is just like Max Talbot.  Having Talbot worked out pretty good for us eh?

Arnstrong can score 15-20 goals, kill penalties, throw brutal checks and was one of if not the most popular player on hte team. Outside of that not nuch of a contributor. :)

"Having Talbot worked out pretty good for us eh?"

And not having Colby worked out pretty well too, eh?

I like Colby, but he's not Brett Hull. Cooke does a bunch of the things Colby does. I'm on board with bringing Colby back to replace Cooke at the end of the season, as long as Army doesn't ask for the reported $2+M that he's now getting from Atlanta, unless he develops into a legit, consistent goal scorer.
