Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!! - 7-15-09

NBC has decided to use the NHL as a toilet broadcast "partner" for two more seasons.

EN Says: You know our feelings on NBC. Its NHL broadcasts are done cheaply and it shows. They do their intermission show in a closet anytime a game is held at Mellon Arena for heaven's sake.

Combine that with how the peacock put its foot down when it came to viewing parties at Mellon Arena and Joe Louis Arena, this is bad news for anyone who is a hockey fan.

The link doesn't say anything about NBC actually paying something for the rights to broadcast the NHL. Does it mean the ride is for free — again? Shouldn't it be time for the NHL to charge again for it, especially given the ratings during the last playoffs? (And I'm not even talking about FSN's record ratings...)

Check out the quote from the KK article...

“Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final was broadcast television’s most-watched hockey game in 36 years, which makes clear the NHL and NBC are building an audience, are building momentum and are perfectly positioned to continue growing the game.”

That's one of the flimsiest statments to have ever been uttered.  The success of the game 7 broadcast was due to the fact that the teams were in an epic winner-take-all battle with two frenzied fanbases that stretch the entire continent.  NBC did nothing to promote that game nor did anything to improve the quality of their broadcast for it.  How can you give NBC credit for the great ratings?  The quality of play, the ultimate prize and the do-or-die situation reigned in all those viewers.  Not NBC.

Credit should not be so easily doled out when nothing was done to deserve it.  This is sad news for hockey fans.

I wasn't giving credit to NBC. What I was saying is that since they got good ratings (no matter who's to credit for that) they should at least pay for the rights to broadcast the NHL.

Just a point of order, I'm pretty sure Kukla's Korner just cut and paste the release from the NHL into their post. So it's not their statement.

Thanks for the reminder about the olympic break Seth.  I'm going to try and drive up to anaheim for a game.  Want to see a game in Mellon Arena before the season is over too so I know not to visit during those months!

Bettman is a tool. This kind of crap is going to continue to happen until the NHL owners get a real Commish with some vison for the future.
