Rangers sign Kotalik - 7-9-09

The Rangers signed former Oilers forward Ales Kotalik. Terms were not disclosed.

Kotalik had 43 points (20 goals, 23 assists) in 75 games last season with the Sabres and Oilers last season.

EN Says: Assuming the terms were sensible (something which is never a safe assumption with the Rangers), this is a nice signing. Kotalik's a solid No. 2 scoring wing. He's fairly consistent when it comes to scoring as he's hit the 20-goal mark four out of the past seven seasons. And while his numbers (2 for 6) in the shootout aren't stellar, he does provide an option in that area.

UPDATE: TSN has the deal as three-years for a total of $3 million.

A 20-goal threat for $1 million a year? We'll take that any day.

EDIT: TSN has updated the total. It's three years for $9 million total. That's a lot for a guy who does nothing but scores 20 goals a season. Kotalik is a very one-dimensional player.

That's 3 years at $3 million per year... that's a little high for 20 goals a year...

that's 3 years totaling 9 million, so 3 million a year for an inconsistent 20 goal a year scorer...not to mention a careen minus player... I would say that's a little overpaid.

ESPN (sports.espn.go.com/.../index) reporting that it is 3 years $9 million. That's the Rangers we all know and love. They couldn't possibly underpay someone.

Guys... not $3 mil a season, a 3-year, $3 million contract. That is 1mil per season. If that is all he cost, we should have got him! Of course we still have those holes in defense and backup goaltending to fill. I see the Bruins signed Sabu. Why didn't we get him back for a 3rd time? He is cheap and decent!

firefox...click on the link that's in the article. TSN says 3 years worth 9 million dollars.

@ irishpants

At the time I clicked on the link, it did in fact say a 3 year, 3 million dollar contract. TSN has since updated it. That said, what a terrible signing. But that is the Rangers.

The Rangers never learn. Would've been better served using that 3 million to re-sign Zherdev.

Fedotenko needs to fire his agent. I know he took less money to stay with the Pens. But the differential is so significant with comparable free agents. I wonder if Fed wanted just one year so he could go back oni the market again. I wish the Pens offered him a tad more and sign him to something like 2 years and 4M or even 4.5M.

Let's be glad that we didn't lose fed in case some other team anted up for him a reasonable deal.
