Talbot to miss 1 to 2 months - 7-7-09

Maxime Talbot's wonky shoulder will force him to miss 1 to 2 months of the upcoming season.

With Talbot sidelined, does that make re-signing Petr Sykora or some other fairly competent second-line winger a bigger priority? Or can the Penguins get by for two months plugging the gap with a guy like Dustin Jeffrey?

Personally, we'd love to see Jeffrey get an audition on Evgeni Malkin's wing. Like Talbot, he can play center or wing. Like Talbot, he picked up his production in the postseason. He had 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 12 playoff games last season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Three of those points were on the power play. He might not be a natural goal-scorer, but he's not afraid to shoot the puck.

We're not suggesting Jeffrey would ever be the long-term solution on the second line, but he's worth a look.

i definitely think dustin jeffrey could hold his own for a month or two at the beginning of the season. i was a big fan of his style when he played up here for a little last season. with fedotenko back for next year we need a guy whos gonna grind it up and throw his body around on genos other wing. imo i feel like fedotenko replaced sykora when he slumped last season (and in the playoffs).

What about trying Caputi there? Obviously, you dont want to rush him. But he's a big body that isn't afraid to go to the front of the net. He could be a lot like Billy G on Sid's line. No one on the current second line really goes to the net, screens the goalie for shots. With Geno's howitzer, a screen would be nice when he tees it up from long  to mid range.

All I know is, they better not try to put Jeffrey in any of the A&L Motors commercials.  There are times when Max is irreplacable.

I think the timing is good for this. I think the Pens need to pace out the older players too. I would have people like Guerin not overdo it in training camp. I think DEtroit's frequent postseason forays cost them some injuries during the Stanley Cup. Luckily the Pens are a very young team. BUt the frequent post season adds a third of the season to the Pens wear and tear. That will have an effect at some point in the near future.

I would use all the depth possible to spell the older players at times during the season.

Last year it seems it was the "year of the high-ankle sprain" this year it was "shoulder injuries"--I hope next year we wont have the same rash of injuries!
