Empty Netter Assists - 7-7-09

Penguins

-The PensBlog covered the premier of the Penguins' championship DVD:

-Sergei Gonchar and Evgeni Malkin will attend training camp for Russia's Olympic team. (Kudos to PensBurgh for the find.)

-Malkin met up with some Penguins fans in Russia this past weekend:

-The term "Penguins Support Crew Russia" might be the greatest grouping of words ever.

-Galleries can be viewed here and here.

-Penguins fourth-round draft pick Nick Petersen is having a heck of a summer. First he got drafted. Next, he'll be getting married.

-The Stanley Cup, the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the World Series Trophy (yes, there is a legit Major League Baseball franchise in this state) will all be on display in the state capital building in Harrisburg today. (Kudos to EN reader Marla Schwartz for the heads up.)

-"Savran on Sportbeat," a Pittsburgh institution, will be canceled.

Atlantic Division

-The Islanders signed former Kings forward and Penguins prospect Matt Moulson.

Northeast Division

-The Maple Leafs signed their first-round pick from last week's draft, forward Nazem Kadri, to a three-year entry-level contract.

-Toronto signed Swedish goaltender Jonas Gustavsson to a one-year deal worth $900,000. Gustavsson was considered the best goaltender outside of the NHL.

-The Maple Leafs also signed former Penguins forward Tim Brent to a one-year deal.

-The NHL is investigating a potential case of tampering involving Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson and Vancouver forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedin.

-The Canadiens hired assistant coaches Pierre Grouix, formerly of the Panthers, and Perry Pearn, formerly of the Rangers.

Southeast Division

-The Thrashers signed former Penguins defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski, former Pittsburgh Forge goaltender Peter Mannino, former Predators goaltender Drew MacIntyre and former Canucks forward Jason Krog.

-President Barack Obama dropped Alex Ovechkin's name while on a trip to Russia.

Central Division

-The Red Wings re-signed forward Ville Leino to a two-year deal worth a total of $1.6 million.

-Detroit also signed former Maple Leafs forwards Jeremy Williams and Kris Newbury. You may remember Newbury for his unfortunate run-in with former Penguins forward Ronald Petrovicky several seasons ago:

-The Blackhawks re-signed restricted free agent defensemen Cam Barker, Aaron Johnson, forwards Troy Brouwer, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser and goaltender Corey Crawford.

-The Blue Jackets signed former Blackhawks forward Pascal Pelletier.

-The Blues re-signed forward B.J. Crombeen.

Northwest Division

-The Canucks re-signed defenseman Shane O'Brien to a one-year deal worth $1.6 million.

-The Avalanche signed former Red Wings forward Darren Haydar and re-signed forwards Chris Durno, Matt Hendricks, David Jones, Brian Willsie and goaltender Tyler Weiman.

-The Wild retained assistant coaches Bob Mason, Mike Ramsey and Matt Shaw.

Pacific Division

-New Maple Leafs defenseman Francois Beauchemin is disappointed the Ducks didn't make a better effort to re-sign him.

-The Ducks re-signed defenseman Brian Salcido.

-The Stars signed former Flames forward Warren Peters.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!

I followed Savran on Sportbeat religiously. Wow, this is a terrible start to my morning.

"The Stanley Cup, the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the World Series Trophy (yes, there is a legit Major League Baseball franchise in this state) will all be on display in the state capital building in Harrisburg today."

Because those mental giants in Harrisburg need any MORE distraction from actually passing a budget.  :p

Also, looking at the list for the Russian team, they only have seven defensemen listed; is it me or is that the bare number you want on the team at all, not just invited to camp?  And three goalies tops.

Sounds to me like the Russians are a lot closer to having their team decided from the get go than the U.S. or Canada's monstrous camp roster.

Wait! Is that Penguin in the Russian Fan Club logo a double amputee?
