Empty Netter Assists - 7-5-09

Penguins

-Introducing Chris Conner.

-Imagine this. A five-year plan that worked.

-Andy Bathgate could score the Penguins' first goal at Consol Energy Center. No, not that one (right).

-Cole Harbor, N.S. is abuzz with talk of a certain type of parade.

Atlantic Division

-The Rangers have changed half their roster from last season's opener.

Central Division

-The agent for restricted free agent Blackhawks defenseman Aaron Johnson called Chicago's snafu with several qualifying offers a "debacle."

-The signing of captain Rick Nash to a long-term deal will make it easier for the Blue Jackets to attract other free agents.

-Nash will be a rarity in Columbus: A life-long athlete.

Northwest Division

-Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher isn't like other general managers in Minneapolis.

A comment on Dvorchak's Sunday piece about the Pens' 5-year plan. I know Dvorchak is a veteran among veteran reporters, but the story left something to be desired.

Being the dreaded one-source story, I was left wanting other people's perspective on the last four years.

Maybe some of this would be "old news," but what did Sid think about being drafted by the then-lowly Pens? What did Shero think about having the pocketbook opened all the way in 2008? What did some previous owners think of the Pens' fortunes, then and now?

Also, looking back at Smizik's Friday column that said, don't worry about the Pens' free agency losses this year. I disagree. Losing some wingers in 2008 is not as bad as losing the two shutdown defensemen in 2009. Playing alongside Crosby and Malkin, any middling winger looks good. Why do you think Fedotenko took a pay cut to stay here? He knows he won't perform as well on another team with an inferior center. (Plus wanting to play for a sure contender.)

The Pens need to replace Gill and Scuderi with some talented newcomers.

You need avatars, that is why this blog will never matchup to the PBC blog.

JAL_

If you want to flame in this neck of the woods, fine. Just don't use homophobic material please.

Thank you.

Honestly JAL, can you give it a rest about avatars?  You're the only person on Earth who cares.

Rather classless on your part.  Go back to the PBC blog with the other retired old yentas that prattle on about Donnie Veal and Steven Pearce.

The PBC fans are just trying to boost their morale.  Their favorite AAA baseball team about to set the professional sports futility record.  And now there is a Pittsburgh team whose 5 year plan actually worked in 5 years.
