Penguins sign Guein - 7-3-09

Eat your heart out Bill Thomas.

The Penguins have signed former Flyers defensmean Nate Guenin, a native of Sewickley, to a one-year, two way deal.

Guenin appeared in one game last season with the Flyers and recorded no points. In 77 games with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL, he had 17 points (four goals, 13 assists).

EN Says: This is a signing for the sake of organizational depth. He'll get a look at as the team's sixth or seventh defenseman. That said, we'll be surprised if he makes the team out of training camp unless another defenseman is injured or something. Guenin had trouble sticking with the NHL club the past few seasons where depth on defense has always been an issue.

There's a Guenin-Guerin joke in there somewhere which we can't put together at the moment.

NOTE: Tom Fitzgerald, who served as an assistant coach last season, will be moved to a newly-created position of assistant to the general manager. The team will hire a replacement as assistant coach.

Not sure about the dig at Thomas. As we saw with Letang, HCDB has a habit of screwing with guys he doesn't like, and I think Thomas was a victim of that as well.  Thomas proved to be a good faceoff man - a position HCDB forced him into when Thomas was first sent down to WBS.  While Thomas will never be Malkin or Ovechkin, he's a solid player who wasn't given a chance to gel in the system in WBS. Consider also that Thomas played very well in San Antonio and was a good 4th liner for Phx, and you have to at least give him the benefit of the doubt for his one year in his home state.  While I am happy for the success both Pens teams had, I don't have faith in HCDB, and his treatment of Letang and Thomas are why.  Bylsma had to be publically browbeaten into giving Letang a chance.  Thomas at least has the talent and demeanor to succeed elsewhere.  In two or three years, will we be able to say the same about the Pens' coaching staff at both levels?

One more thing: we should be so lucky as these kids.  Who else in this screwy economy BUT athletes are getting paid to do something they love?
