Penguins re-sign Fedotenko - 7-3-09

The Penguins have re-signed forward Ruslan Fedotenko to a one-year deal. Financial terms of the deal have not been released.

In his first season with the Penguins, he scored 39 points (16 goals, 23 assists) in 65 games. He was the Penguins' fourth-leading scorer in the playoffs with 14 points (seven goals, seven assists).

EN Says: Regardless of the money, we have to imagine this rules out a return for Petr Sykora.

We like the signing. Fedotenko's regular season stats will never blow you away (Though, he probably would've hit the 20-goal mark if his fist didn't have an unfortunate run-in with Colby Armstrong's nose), but he does lots of little things that help his team win and he just works well with Evgeni Malkin on the second line. He goes to the net, will work hard along the boards and most importantly, picks his game up in the postseason.

UPDATE: Dave Molinari has the salary cap number at $1.8. Fedotenko made $2.25 million last season.

EN Says: That's a bargain for a second-line winger. That should leave them plenty of room to sign a competent No. 6 or 7 defenseman.

Now, if the Penguins can somehow acquire Henrik Zetterberg, Travis Moen, Frantisek Kaberle, Brendan Shanahan, Alex Tanguay, Jason Arnott and Darren McCarty, they'll have every active player who has scored a Stanley Cup-clinching goal.

Good for you, Fedo. It'll be fun watching him again this year.

I kept refusing to believe the $1.8M when I first saw it. Kept thinking it was a $2.8M if it was just one year. I'd almost be willing to sign him for two years at that price.

Wow...1.8M...helluva deal.  Welcome back Tank!

Losing Scuds and Fedotenko would've hurt. Like Seth wrote...may not be a 30-goal scorer but does a ton of little things. Especially in the playoffs.

I am shocked at the numbers. To think an over the hill Gill got more money. Something wrong about this picture. Fed is going to make the same as Goligoski, who is talented, but still practically coming off a rookie season.

Wow, just wow.

If Fed accepted another offer for 2.2 , I would have blamed Shero for losing him since 1.8 seemed to be a low ball number. Not even a 2 year contract. I wish they signed him for 2 years 3.8M or something if he was going to give us such a bargain rate.

no 1 yr is perfect, with the cap almost 99% def going down after next season, Shero is GOD, (knock on wood) IN SHERO WE TRUST..

First up - thanks Tenko - I can guarantee he turned down a higher $ 'tract but wanted to win NOW.  Just curious, has anyone heard anything about the Pens offer to Scuds, if one was indeed made.  W/ Tenk's low signing I think they could've afforded him, although the cap sitchu next year (going DOWN) and Letang/Gonch's extensions must be going through their heads.  Will miss Rob S. - he earned his $$$.

Does anyone else think this team will clear some cap space by trading Dupes and/or Godard?  Remember, Godard had as many minutes on the ice in the playoffs as me (ZERO) and Dupes was odd man out when we dressed 7 D.  W/ the Rupp signing I could see us trading them for a prospect and signing a vet D-Man (welcome back Sydor????).  Goodbye Pete Sykora...may you ride off in the sunset w/ another Cup ring.

I've seen reports that had the Penguins offer to Scuderi at either 4 yrs/$8.2M or 5 yrs/10M. And I agree with the earlier comment that one year for Fedotenko works just fine.

I don't see who would trade for Dupuis or Godard...Dupuis maybe, but who really wants Godard? And don't get me wrong, I don't have anything bad to say about Godard. Just can't see why someone would trade for an enforcer. Maybe Philly would. They can't get enough of those guys.

I think it would be a mistake to shoot for a "competent No. 6 or 7 defenseman."  That would leave Half Season Mark Eaton as the No. 4.  Shero should try for a better option.  Acquiring a soild defensive defenseman, whether it be thought free agency or trade, should be his top priority and let Eaton and Lovejoy rotate at 6 and 7.

I agree that it is likely that Dupuis (or Cooke) will be traded.

People keep talking about Cooke being traded and I just can't see that as a good idea; that whole third line bleeds black and gold at this point and did some seriously good work this past year; I think that kind of chemistry would be a real mistake to shake up without a darn good reason (and freeing up their cap space for someone similar but less experienced doesn't count as a good reason to me).

Dupuis is prime trade fodder; he's been ok here but nothing extraordinary and his pricetag seems a little hefty to me for what he accomplishes.

I'm a fan of Godard and want him kept around, but I just have a soft spot for our enforcers I guess and if we're going to keep one around, may as well be him.

Here's the forward lines:

Guerin - Crosby - Kunitz

Fedotenko - Malkin - Talbot

Cooke - Staal - Kennedy

Dupuis - Adams - Godard/Rupp

Some of y'all are talking like Cooke didn't do anything in the playoffs. Cooke got 7 points, Kennedy got 9 points, and Staal got 9 points in the playoffs. Pretty balanced scoring to me, plus when that line cycled down low with the puck, it was doggone near impossible to get the puck away from them.

If anyone should be traded for salary, it's Dupuis. He makes more than Cooke, but, as I said before, Dupuis is going to have to be packaged, just like he was with Hossa in the Atlanta trade last year.

Anyone suggesting Godard getting traded is talking plain foolishness. Rupp can fight, but so can Talbot, Kennedy, and Staal. So you want those guys taking on Brashear in the six games against the Rangers and Carcillo and Cote in six games against the Flyers, and like Goodard is breaking the bank at 750,000. Please...

Shero sells not 1, not 2 but 3 players to take pay cuts...  amazing job.  Still some money left to sign a decent 6th Defenseman and another wing.
