Old timers - 7-3-09

The Penguins didn't just lose a defensive stalwart when Rob Scuderi bolted for Los Angeles yesterday. The also lost one of their most tenured players.

Scuderi made his debut with the NHL Penguins Feb. 12 2004. Only Brooks Orpik and Marc-Andre Fleury (above, making a stop on Kings forward Zigmund Palffy in his NHL debut during the Penguins' home opener of the 2003-04 season) compiled longer tenures with the organization.

Here's a list of every player currently with the organization (we included unsigned free agents too for the heck of it) who has played in at least one game with the NHL club and the length of days they've been with the franchise since they made their debut in black and gold (or blue and dark blue):

Player First game Days since
Brooks Orpik 12-10-02 2,397
Marc-Andre Fleury 10-10-03 2,093
Sidney Crosby 10-5-05 1,367
Sergei Gonchar 10-5-05 1,367
Maxime Talbot 10-5-05 1,367
Mark Eaton 10-5-06 1,002
Kris Letang 10-5-06 1,002
Jordan Staal 10-5-06 1,002
Evgeni Malkin 10-18-06 989
Petr Sykora 10-5-07 637
Tyler Kennedy 10-27-07 615
Connor James 12-15-07 566
Jeff Taffe 12-20-07 561
Chris Minard 1-21-08 529
Alex Goligoski 2-13-08 506
Pascal Dupuis 2-28-08 491
Paul Bissonnette 10-4-08 272
Matt Cooke 10-4-08 272
Ruslan Fedotenko 10-4-08 272
Eric Godard 10-4-08 272
Miroslav Satan 10-4-08 272
Bill Thomas 10-5-08 271
Mike Zigomans 10-11-08 265
Janne Pesonen 11-1-08 244
Philippe Boucher 11-18-08 227
John Curry 11-26-08 219
Ben Lovejoy 12-8-08 207
Tim Wallace 12-10-08 205
Dustin Jeffrey 12-26-08 189
Luca Caputi 2-3-09 150
Chris Kunitz 2-27-09 126
Craig Adams 3-5-09 120
Bill Guerin 3-5-09 120

Note: When looking at this list, keep in mind, we didn't account for time a player might've been demoted to the minor leagues or juniors. If you played a game with the NHL team and never "left" the organization, the clock kept running as it regards to this list.

Those yellow pads were awesome. I remember Fleury's debut. Didn't he have a really sweet poke-check on a penalty shot in that game?

Some of these players were in the minors for years before their first NHL start. That time doesn't count? They were in the organization and playing together as a team. Maybe I'm biased because I'm from WIlkes Barre. :>
