Former Penguins backup goaltender Mathieu Garon has signed with the Blue Jackets. The deal is for two years and is worth $1.2 million per season. In 19 games with the Oilers and Pittsburgh, Garon was 8-9-0 with a 3.12 goals again average and .894 save percentage. He only appeared in four games with the Penguins and made three starts. He was 2-1-0 with the Penguins with a 2.91 goals against average and .894 save percentage.
The Penguins acquired him in January from Edmonton in exchange for goaltender Dany Sabourin, forward Ryan Stone and a fourth-round pick in 2011. He will serve as a back up to Steve Mason in Columbus.
EN Says: This isn't surprising. Garon was strictly a luxury in the second half of the season and with the Penguins being squeezed under the salary cap, there was no way the Penguins were going to be able to re-sign Garon for the money he can command.
It's hard to really make much of Garon's time in Pittsburgh given that he only played a handful of games. But we'll always have this goofy picture of him.
