NHL Draft - Day 2 update - 6-27-09

Apologies for the delay in updates today folks. We started a new overnight shift and it's taking time to adjust our sleep schedule.

SECOND ROUND - Philip Samuelsson, D - Chicago (USHL)

Having had it work out well twice before, the Penguins picked up a defenseman named Samulesson. They made Philip Samuelsson, the son of Ulf Samuelsson (above), their second-round pick today. He will play at Boston College next season.

Hockey's Future says:

"A very green, but reliable defensive-defensemen who is still developing.  Samuelsson lacks the skill of most drafted defenders, however.

He gets himself into a good position, which makes him a big presence down low. Very conscious in his own end. Does a good job of getting stick in passing lanes and forcing turnovers, especially with a poke check. Should take the play to the opposition instead of waiting. Average skater who needs work to on improving his overall footwork, strength, and stride. Also needs to become more efficient moving the puck out of his own zone. Has a tendency to try and force the puck up ice. Generally stays glued on the back end in the offensive zone. Developing a hard shot from the backend. Needs to get quicker with his hands in all areas. Sees time on special teams.

Samuelsson is a long shot for the NHL at this point. He is noticed for his size and name, but has a lot of development ahead of him."

THIRD ROUND - Ben Hanowski, RW - Little Falls, H.S., Minn.

Hanowski is the leading all-time scorer in Minnesota high school hockey with 405 points. He will play at St. Cloud State next season.

NHL Central Scouting says:

“Ben needs to improve his overall skating, but his unselfishness, his hands and above all his ability to score goals sets him apart. His knack for scoring goals is similar to Thomas Vanek – his extra dimension is scoring goals.”

FOURTH ROUND - NIck Petersen, RW - Shawinigan, QMJHL

Petersen was Shawinigan's second-leading scorer last season with 90 points (37 goals, 53 assists) in 68 games.

FIFTH ROUND - Alex Velischek, D - Delbarton, H.S., N.J.

Velischek is the son of former NHL defenseman Randy Velischek. He will play for Providence this season. Delbarton is the same high school Ducks goon and Washington, Pa. native George Parros attended.

FIFTH ROUND - Andy Bathgate, C - Belleville (OHL)

As you might suspect, Bathgate is related to the former Penguins forward. He's his grandson. This Bathgate had 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) in 44 games with the Belleville Bulls, the junior team of another Penguins prospect, Eric Tangradi.

SIXTH ROUND - Viktor Ekbom, D - Linkoping, Sweden

In addition to having an awesome name, Ekbom had two assists for Sweden in the World Junior Championships this past season.

NOTES:

-The Flames pulled off the big deal of the day by trading for the signing rights of former Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. In exchange, the Flames dealt the signing rights of defenseman Jordan Leopold and a third round pick to Florida. To make some salary cap room, the Flames re-acquired forward Brandon Prust from Phoenix in exchange for defenseman Jim Vandermeer.

-Ducks forward Teemu Selanne will return to Anaheim next season. He was considering retirement.

-The Red Wings took forward Landon Ferraro in the second round. He is the son of former NHL forward Ray Ferraro.

-In the third round, the Rangers selected forward Ryan Bourque. He is the son of Bruins hall-of-famer Ray Bourque and the brother of Capitals prospect Chris Bourque.

-In the fourth round, the Sabres drafted left wing Marcus Foligno. He is the son of former Sabres forward Mike Foligno and brother of Senators forward Nick Foligno.

-In the fourth round, the Capitals took defensman Patrick Wey. He is a native of Mt. Lebanon who played for Waterloo of the USHL.

-In the seventh round, the Kings drafted foward Jordan Nolan. He is the son of former Penguins forward and NHL coach Ted Nolan.
