Red Wings-Penguins preview - 5-30-09

(2) Red Wings vs. (4) Penguins

Red Wings Leading Playoff Scorer: Johan Franzen 18 points (10 goals, eight assists).

Penguins Leading Playoff Scorer: Sidney Crosby, 28 points (14 goals, 14 assists).

Red Wings Statistics

Penguins Statistics

Red Wings with Stanley Cup bling: Chris Chelios (3), Dan Cleary, Pavel Datsyuk (2), Kris Draper (4), Valtteri Filppula, Johan Franzen, Darren Helm, Tomas Holmstrom (4), Jiri Hudler, Tomas Kopecky, Nicklas Kronwall, Brett Lebda, Nicklas Lidstrom (4), Andreas Lilja, Kirk Maltby (4), Chris Osgood (3), Brian Rafalski (3), Mikael Samuelsson, Brad Stuart, Henrik Zetterberg (right).

Penguins with Stanley Cup bling: Craig Adams, Chris Kunitz, Ruslan Fedotenko, Bill Guerin, Petr Sykora.

Something worthwhile about the Red Wings: Only two of the 18 players who dressed for the Red Wings in last year's Stanley Cup final are no longer with the team. Forward Dallas Drake and goaltender Dominik Hasek both retired.

Something worthwhile about the Penguins: Sidney Crosby (1.43) and Evgeni Malkin (1.29) have the third and fourth highest career playoff points-per-game averages in NHL history. Only Wayne Gretzky (1.84) and Mario Lemieux (1.61) have better averages.

Something useless about the Red Wings that is vaguely connected to the Penguins: Jiri Slegr (No. 71) and Paul Coffey (No. 77) are the only two players to have worn jersey numbers in the 70s for both franchises.

Something useless about the Penguins that is vaguely connected to the Red Wings: Former Red Wings forward Dino Ciccarelli was the first opponent to record a playoff hat trick against the Penguins. As a member of the Capitals, he scored three goals in a 7-2 rout of the Penguins, April 25, 1992.

Former Penguins on the Red Wings: Ty Conklin, G; Marian Hossa, RW; Mikael Samuelsson, RW.

Former Red Wings on the Penguins: Sidney Crosby, C (He used to play for the Cole Harbour Red Wings....).

Who needs to be the difference for the Red Wings: Henrik Zetterberg. He shut down the Penguins' offense on several key power play opportunities last season and for that, he won the Conn Smythe Trophy. He'll need to continue to be a world-class defensive player and win his fair share of faceoffs in order to help neutralize Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Who needs to be the difference for the Penguins: Evgeni Malkin (right). He is so key to this series. He was out of gas in last season's final and that really limited the offensive output the Penguins had. In these playoffs, he has done some miraculous things with the puck and he need to continue that if the Penguins are to pull off an upset.

(We got those backwards we think...)

EN Prediction: Red Wings 4-3. The Red Wings aren't as good as they were last year, primarily due to their health. The Penguins are a little better this year, primarily because of their coaching. But there's still a gap. Even if some of the parts are a little rust or even a little cracked, the Big Red Machine is still running strong. We just have a hard time seeing the Penguins being able to fully exploit the few flaws Detroit has. If players like Nicklas Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk and others can't go or are even hobbled in one fashion or another, it's another story. But assuming everything is smooth in Detroit, a big assumption mind you, we see the Winged Wheel being just good enough to get by with its second consecutive Stanley Cup title.

Note: We said the Hurricanes would be a challenge in our preview for the Eastern Conference final. So put as much weight into our predictions as you want.

You'll probably get ragged a bit for going in that direction.  Props for actually going there.

Don't take this the wrong way or anything, Seth, but I sincerely hope you're wrong this time.

Rolling 7 d-men and rotating the centers on that 4th line causes a lot of matchup problems for opponents.  I think it's a huge factor in this series.

Stealing game 1 while the Wings are banged up is crucial.

Pens in 6.

I say Pens in 6.

The one tangible change in coaching philosophy will make the difference.   Last year we tried to sit back and counter punch waiting for Detroit to make a mistake which they rarely did and played from the perimeter.

This year, we are much more aggressive and force teams into mistakes and yes I believe even Detroit will make a few more.

I think the Pens will also be a little less overwhelmed by the whole process like last year and easily get a split this weekend and dare I say maybe a sweep if they can win tonight.

I agree Purple Moose.

As long as we don't sit back, Detroit can be had. We've proven Ward to be human, and I feel Osgood is not as strong as Ward.

Pens take the first 2 in Detroit, lose game 3, win game 4, lose game 5, and we get to celebrate Stanley's return in game 6 at home.

Well I can't say you're gonna win any popularity contests with that prediction Seth, but you do make a valid point.

Detroit is without a doubt going to give us the greatest challenge of the playoffs. Philly was well...Philly! I mean come on we live and breath to beat the Flyers. Washington was tough but not unfathomably so. All the hype on Crosby and Ovechkin allowed the rest of our team to quietly emerge and do what needed to be done. Carolina...well I think honestly that Carolina just used up everything they had to get past the Bruins and were just hanging on when they got to us. But Detroit...well Detroit is a whole other beastie isn't it? They have depth, experience, defense, offense, goaltending...the whole package. They've been here... ALOT! They may be tired and banged up and not firing on all cylinders but this team has in now way lost enough of its edge to be taken lightly as an opponent.

I believe we can win this but EVERYTHING is going to have be in sync. Fluery can't wander outside his paint to play the puck or Detroit will bury it in the back of the net every time. He's goin to have to play the series of his young life and own that place between the pipes like the the prime real estate it is. Malkin and Crosby must score that oes without saying and they must do it in tandem. We can't  switch off who wants to be on their game the way we did with Washington. There will have to be some power in the PP and the PK will need to be flawless. We'll need goals from unlikely sources- like that Kasparitis goal way back when- and SOLID defense.

Other then that I think as long as we sacrifice the obligatory virgins/chickens/goats and what have you's; light our candles, say our prayers, eat our wheaties, and taint the water bottles on the Wings bench with swine flu we've got no worries....LOL!

I say Pens in 7.

Pens need to take advantage of their youth and speed.

They need to win at least 2 of the first 3.  Three games in 4 days works to their advantage and they must capitalize.  If they do, Molinari will be proven right.

If they don't, EN will be correct in their Detroit prediction, but it won't go 7.

If Detroit wins at least 2 of the first 3, this will be lucky to go 6.

Must go hard early.

Must be physical.

GO PENS!

Wow, I never expected you to pick Detroit for this one.  I think you're right though, if Detroit is healthy or can get healthy they should take this series.

Datsyuk and Draper are out for game 1.  You said different story if some of the Detroit stars don't play. Any update to the prediction?

I have to agree with Milwaukee Hockey:

Its hard to predict against the Wings. I've always referred to them as the Borg (star trek anyone?). They are one well oiled machine. Even without Datsyuk...but not so much Lidstrom.

BUT....here's hoping the Pens have grown just that much to make the difference. Namely Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Fleury...the team's success rides on these guys.

I agree with PurpleMoose's assessment. Coaching, aggressive style, more experience, and a full-tilt Malkin can be the tonic to upset the Wings.

Looking forward to seeing how far our Pens have come. This is going 7 games either way. You gotta believe...PENS IN 7.

Very interesting... this shift in starting time...and 3 games in 4 days. Unprecedented?? It couldn't have ANYTHING to do with wings injuries? This has BUTTman's paws ALL over it. I predict Hossa steps up big time, and there's no containing him. That should get the boo birds feathers flapping in the Igloo..LOL...Would like to see Wings win it at home, so none of this 6 stuff. Wings in 7...five would be too one-sided(boring)!!

What's up, vegas guy? So scared of the Penguins you are already making excuses for defeat?
