Five things which haven't changed - 5-29-09

Five random things which haven't changed from last year's Stanley Cup final:

1.) Winter Curse. Anytime a road team wins the Winter Classic aaaand has Ty Conklin (above) in net, they lose the Stanley Cup final. Yeah, there's that whole, "It's only happened one time you dumb$*@$#!" argument, but we're not going to get in line to quibble with a .000 winning percentage under those circumstances.

2.) Detroit's Depth. Few teams have anything approaching the organization depth the Red Wings have. Players like Darren Helm (above) and Ville Leino could be second-liners on most NHL teams. With Detroit, they're AHLers. The Red Wings were without players like Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom in the Western Conference final but still managed to dispatch Chicago in five games.

3.) Osgood really that good? A common complaint about Chris Osgood is that he's just the product of a good defensive system. We've made it and we believe it. If you stuck Osgood on the Penguins, they probably don't get out of the first round. But he doesn't play on the Penguins. He plays on the Red Wings. And he's gotten them to the Stanley Cup final for the second consecutive season. Who care's if he's part of a system? Especially if it's a really successful system.

4.) Battle up front. Last season, Hal Gill and Tomas Holmstrom proceeded to beat the daylight out of each other in front of Marc-Andre Fleury. If you're into seeing two grown men legally assault one another, keep an eye on these two. They should put on an encore performance.

5.) Home sweet home. Detroit has home ice in this series and that means the Red Wings will get to put Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk on the ice against Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin should they choose those match-ups. Zetterberg won the Conn Smythe Award last year for his defensive effort, especially on the power play, against the Penguins' best offensive weapons. Don't expect that strategy to change.

I will never criticize success by saying someone is just "part of a system" because that's what everyone STILL says about Big Ben.  And if it is a system, who cares if it works? Anyway, I say Pens in 6.

I thought Gill should have been benched in the Carolina series (or at least limited to PK duty only), but he will have to be a huge part of the finals. Carolina had a fast and aggressive forecheck, which was bad news for Gill (or any defenseman who can't make quick decisions with the puck). Detroit, on the other hand, scores most of their goals in front or because of traffic in front. Gill might not be the most physical guy around, but I'm sure he's seen what Pronger did to Holmstrom and will make his life miserable if he wants to stand in front of Fleury.

2003 Heritage Classic, Edmonton had Conklin in net.

The next time that they were in the Stanley Cup finals they lost.

Coincidence?  I think not.

Chris Osgood is soooooooo beatable. They've lost just as many potential Cups with him as they've won with him.

I was at Staples Center the night the Kings scored 3 goals in the last 8 minutes of a playoff game to tie the Wings, then LA quickly won in overtime, and went on to win a series in which they didn't even know if they could win a game. It was a major upset. Even LA knew that. Osgood was the Wings goalie.

Osgood reminds me of, when you're playing dek hockey, or rec league, the goalie who just laughs at the other team because you can't even get a shot on him. But you can definitely get in his head.

The Penguins just never got into Osgood's head last year. Maybe this year they will.

BTW, are you going to post I Like Mike for Game 4 of the Canes series? I want to hear the best call of all: "Spit shine your shoes .... we're going dancing with Lord Stanley."

The Penguins Web site does such a poor job of promoting their Hall of Fame announcer.

I love how everyone thinks Osgood is a weak goalie playing in a system which prevents him from facing tough shots. Just watch some of the highlights from Game 5 against Chicago. Osgood like it or not is a future Hall-Of-Famer!!! He is currently in both top ten lists for regular season wins by a goalie and playoff wins. I like the Pens chances this year and they have a real shot to dethrone the reigning champs. if Detroit has a weakness it is the penalty kill and the injuries to key players. Still, I would take the Wings defensive corps over Pittsburghs' d-men, and Detroit is still deeper even though the Pens have improved in that area. Should be a great series again! Wings in 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Osgood might be a Hall of Famer simply out of longevity, thus he'll get the votes because he has the "numbers." He was sitting pretty on a great team all those years. Anyone can make some great saves in any given playoff game. Lots of goalies would have all those Cups. Some better ones would have had more on that team (Roy, Hasek).

Osgood is not scary to face. He's totally beatable if you can attack them.

Did he lift a poor Islanders team when he played for them? No.

Seth, is that pic of Gill and Holmstrom the same one you used a few posts ago, from the reverse angle? Looks familiar...

Umm yeah. Osgood is really good. He outplayed Fleury in last years Cup Finals. And he has been clutch in this year's playoffs. Fleury had a great series against Caroina. So did Osgood in the last round. The guy just turns it up in the playoffs. Who cares about the regular reason?

To Sean94, after two games do you still think Osgood is soooooooo beatable? Would you rather have Fleury over Osgood? I smell a Conn Smythe Trophy with Osgood's name on it. Betcha Fleury becomes trade bait after this year if he doesn't pick up his game. Cindy wants to dump her blind date Henrik in Pittsburgh, he won't leave her alone.
