Empty Netter Assists - 5-7-09

Playoff Stuff

Penguins-Capitals

-Dave Molinari's recap from last night's game. Welcome back Evgeni Malkin.

-The Washington Post's recap. "We were playing not to lose rather than to win." - Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau.

-The Washington Times' recap. Simeon Varlamov couldn't do it all for the Capitals.

-The Associated Press' recap. Kris Letang's goal was his first career playoff score.

-NHL.com's recap. Letang was questionable to even play.

-Letang's goal:

-Letang decribed his goal as the most important score of his career.

-Malkin's goal:

(Coat foul on Malkin's mom.)

-"You're forced to respond when you're down 2-0." - Sidney Crosby.

-Maxime Talbot did wonders on the second line.

-The Capitals need to quit taking penalties.

-Marc-Andre Fleury is 4-0 in playoff overtime games.

-Killing all those penalties wore out Washington.

-"They deserved to win." - Mike Green (right) on the Penguins.

-Will Simeon Varlamov's (right) conditioning be an issue with Games 4 and 5 on back-to-back nights?

-Chris Kunitz expected much more than a fine for his cross check to Simeon Varlamov's head in Game 2.

-A question about the power play and Mike Yeo that doesn't involve profanity.

-Bruce Boudreau cares not for the Penguins' accusations of obsctruction.

-Nicklas Backstrom scored his first goal of the playoffs.

-Michael Nylander was pretty much benched in the third period and overtime.

-Brooks Orpik said the Capitals were tired.

-The Penguins' season is just getting started while the Pirates' is all but over.

-"It's kind of a joke." Alex Ovechkin on the Capitals having seven penalties to the Penguins' two last night.

-Alex Ovechkin is, if nothing else, honest:

-Ovechkin > LeBron James?

Bruins-Hurricanes

-Jussi Jokinen continues to score big goals for Carolina. His overtime score gave the Hurricanes's a 3-2 win against the Bruins. Jokinen and Sergei Samsonov each had a goal and an assist for Carolina which took a 2-1 series lead.

-Jokinen's goal:

-Jussi Jokinen = Clutch.

-It's hard to believe the Hurricanes got Jokinen for next to nothing in a deal with Tampa Bay before the trade deadline.

-Carolina forward Eric Staal carried his team once again.

-Jokinen and Bruins forward Mark Recchi began the season in Tampa Bay. Now, they're going at in the second round.

-A turnover by Boston captain Zdeno Chara led to Jokinen's goal.

-Bruins defenseman and former Penguin Andrew Ference left the game in the second period due to a "lower-body" injury.

-"We got outworked." - Bruins defenseman Dennis Wideman.

-Bill Cowher is one Pittsburgh transplant who has switched loyalties.

Red Wings-Ducks

-Anaheim defenseman James Wisniewski (right) was released from a hospital after he suffered a lung contusion in Game 3.

-Grit and toughness can only take you so far in the playoffs. You still need some pure goal-scorers like Ducks forward Teemu Selanne.

-The Ducks have been outshot in every one of their playoff games.

-The Red Wings need to start playing desperate.

Canucks-Blackhawks

-The Canucks don't mind being "Canada's Team."

-The Staals Sutters Ruutus Conachers Sedins are brothers.

-Game 4 is a must-win for the Blackhawks.

-Canucks defenseman Sami Salo ("lower-body" injury) could return for Game 4.

Calder Cup Playoffs

-The Capitals organization was just snake-bitten against the Penguins last night. Mark Letestu's overtime goal gave the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 3-2 win against the Hershey Bears. Adam Berkhoel made 23 save in the win. Hershey has a 2-1 series lead.

-Paul Bissonnette was hospitalized after he suffered a cut artery in his wrist.

IIHF World Championships

-Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and an assist and led Russia to a 4-3 quarterfinal win against Belarus. Former Penguins forward Aleksey Morozov had an assist for Russia. Another former Penguins forward, Konstantin Koltsov scored a goal for Belarus. Fire Craig Patrick.

-Former Flyers goaltender Robert Esche made 47 saves and the United States advanced to the semifinals with a 3-2 defeat of Finland.

-Check out the passing that led to this goal by Blues and United States forward T.J. Oshie:

Non-Playoff Stuff

Southeast Division

-The Lightning's owners are looking for suckers investors.

-Former Islanders defenseman Denis Potvin was let go as a television color analyst for the Panthers.

Pacific Division

-Ducks forward and former Winnipeg Jet, Teemu Selanne, would mind seeing his former franchise, now known as the Phoenix Coyotes, make a return to Canada.

-If Gary Bettman can't keep the Coyotes in Phoenix, will he lose his job?

-Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky could stand to pocket upwards of $22 million depending on who buys the franchise.

-Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper wants another team in his country.

-The fate of the Coyotes has become the top story in Canada.

-The fans in Phoenix are not to blame for the mess the Coyotes have become.

The situation in the desert is not going to turn out good for anyone. Regardless of what happens, Bettman is as good as gone. There is no way he comes out of this looking good.  I feel sorry for the fans most of all. They supported a completely inept franchise for many years.

Okposo-Backes-Oshie for the USA.  Nice to see an all Minnesota line, and St Louis have to love their future with guys like Backes and Oshie.

The Pens and the Baby Pens beat the Caps and Bears last night, both 3-2 in OT, both to bring the series to 2-1. How cool is that?

Does Malkin usually jump into the glass like that after scoring, or was he just mocking Ovechkin?

He really reminded me of Jagr on that goal.
