Call 212-664-4444

Game 3 of the Penguins-Flyers series will not be shown on the big screen outside of Gate 3 of Mellon Arena due to a decision by NBC.

EN: What a rotten decision by NBC. It makes sense. They want as many sets of eyes on their broadcast so they can brag about how it matched re-runs of "Herman's Head" on WGN. That way, they can justify whatever they charge Heineken to run those horrendous "beer closet" commercials.

Still, leave it to the Peacock to ruin not only hockey broadcasts in general with Pierre McGuire and Mike Milbury slobbering all over each other in fake arguments in attempts to be edgy and "ESPNy," but they have to squash out something that was just so... right?

If NBC is concerned about this being a drag on its ratings, we would suggest they ask if FSN Pittsburgh's ratings were hurt by the screen for Game 1:

It sure seemed to hurt WPXI's that night.

If you don't like the decision, call NBC Sports directly at 212-664-4444.

What a bunch of jerks.

"As a policy, NBC Sports does not allow teams to show their broadcasts on arena screens."

Did they just implement this new policy today?  Why did they allow it last year?  Surely they were aware...they proudly showed outdoor-big screen watching Pens fans celebrating goals on their broadcast.  Why are they being the fun police?

These are just frustration induced rhetorical questions Seth, please don't think I'm peppering you for answers.

Its probably a good decision for a TV network to prevent people from watching.  Especially considering their crap product.  Bill O'Reilly is right about NBC.

You guys can come over my house and watch if my wife says its OK.

I wonder if NBC knows that the money collected to watch the away games in the arena last year went to a charity.  Basically, in order to make the most money from their awful broadcast, they're going to steal from a charity.  Way to go NBC.  I wish there was a way to boycott NBC.

This is really lame. NBC games are painful to watch. Enough with the staged arguments, it is not fun to watch. I really hope the peacock's days of broadcasting hockey will be over soon.

This is what happens when a sports network (or the sports division of a broadcast network, in this case) hangs around the NFL too much.  They get wind of how the NFL's "no Super Bowl parties" thing works and how it "boosts" ratings, and so they want to try it out.

This could be the beginning of the end, though, of the outdoor screen, if my paranoid delusions become truth.  What if Versus catches on to this and tries to enforce a similar policy for the later rounds?

Though, I have an idea.  I don't know if it will fly with the minor leagues, though.

Someone call up the AHL and see if they will allow the arena to put the Baby Penguins' Game 3 on that big screen.  (I'm sure they can afford the nominal Internet streaming fee of $8.)  People can then still gather around the screen and watch some hockey while they listen to the Pittsburgh game and, at the same time, thwart NBC's attempt to boost ratings.

It won't be long before other networks follow suit. Leave it to a bunch of guys in suits sitting around the boardroom to ruin a good thing.

Hogan's Heroes > Herman's Head

Hogan's Heroes was solid.

"Ask Jay" > "Law and Order".

I called the number. Got some lady who barely spoke english who sent me to a voicemail box. The recording was "Leave a comment and we will send it to the right party", i.e. if you want a leave message..go ahead, but don't expect us to do anything about it. Of course I left a message, but NBC is a joke. Millberry and McGuire are as well. This is very disappointing.

Beavis & Butthead > Milbury & McGuire

If my above idea fails, I have a secondary idea (which may actually be better than my first).

I sense the perfect marketing opportunity for WXDX-FM to celebrate its new extended radio contract with the Penguins by hosting a "Game 3 Listening Party" outside the arena.  Replace the screen with speakers, crank them up, and let the fans rejoice in the dulcet tones of Mike Lange and Phil Bourque while protesting NBC at the same time.

Township rebellion, bulls on parade, rally round the family...use whatever Rage lyric you want.  Such are the thoughts going through my head right now.  Turn that anger into action, folks.

Rumors are swirling here in Minny that McGuire might be the next GM of the Wild.

Go to the following website and click on "Free Stuff".  At the top of the page you will see "Radiodelay".

Download and install this great software to eliminate the delay between the Radio broadcast with Mike Lange and the stupid NBC nitwits.

or just click here to get it directly:

The Pens aren't the only team that does this...I wonder if NBC are being jerks in all the playoff cities too?

I think it was Buffalo that first erected a big screen outside.

Great idea NBC, alienate a load of Pens fans, who will just go and watch the game in a bar instead. It could have been a great PR act by showing the game on the screen and then cutting to the fans outside the igloo during stoppages. They are not going to increase rating by that much because the people who would sit outside the igloo are just as likely to go to a bar and watch it there...

How do you know the screen didn't hurt FSN?  What if FSN would have gotten an 18 rating without the screen?

JP Connection wrote re: Call 212-664-4444

This is really annoying.  How did NBC not see that giant screen last year when they showed the Pens?  The Pensblog has a nice list of contacts for people at NBC Sports if you want to e-mail them.  I did.  Not sure how much good it will do but it made me feel a little better.

Just another reason to Hate NBC, and I can't even take advantage of the screen. I live in Colorado.

LET"S GO PENS!!!

maninthestrip. Fair question and point. The point I was trying to make is that, its very rare for a cable network, of any kind in any circmustances, local or national, to lead in ratings during a time period like that.

I was going to have a group of people over to my place to watch the game Sunday, but not anymore.  I'm boycotting NBC for the rest of the playoffs.  We're all going to the bar instead.  Since I'm a Nielsen household, I figure that more than makes up for the few thousand eyeballs they'll gain from shutting down the big screen.

I'll begin watching again when they fire McGuire and Milbury.  Your turn, NBC...
