Eastern Conference playoff update - 4-7-09

A brief update on how the Eastern Conference looks after tonight's games.

-The Penguins clinched a playoff berth for the third consecutive season. They are in sixth place with 95 points. They still have a shot at the No. 4 seed, but need some help in the form of losses by the Flyers and Hurricans obviously.

-The Flyers clinched a playoff berth by beating the Panthers, 2-1. They are in fourth place with 97 points.

-The Devils failed to secure the Atlantic Division title after losing 4-1 to Toronto. They are in third place in the Eastern Conference with 102 points.

-Carolina kept pace with the Flyers by smacking the Islanders, 9-0. They are in fifth place with 97 points. The Flyers have a tiebreaker on them on account of having fewer games played.

-The Rangers moved close to securing a playoff spot by beating Montreal 3-1. With Florida losing, they moved two points ahead of ninth place Panthers who have 89 points. Additionally, the Rangers, with 91 points, are only one point behind seventh place Montreal (92 points).

-The Sabres are on life support. They are in tenth place with 85 points. Basically, the only way the Sabres can get in is if they win their final three games and have the Rangers and Panthers lose the rest of theirs in regulation.

-The standings can be viewed here.

At least that racist scumbag murderer isn't going to get to enjoy these playoffs...

Mr. Perkovic said he did not know where his friend spent the night before the killings, but said he did not sound intoxicated during the phone call. "He sounded like he was scared or injured."

He said the two had been together Thursday night watching a Penguins game. Afterward, he said, Mr. Poplawski commented that the team appeared headed for the Stanley Cup playoffs and that the two should get tickets.

Something tells me those two have bigger issues to worry about in their lives.

Seth, it looks like the Pens are in sixth place -- not seventh.  You scared the bejesus out of me!

MIchael Dion

Why was that murderer labeled a racist? I believe he murdered two white cops and a black cop.

Race had nothing to do with this. He is a pathetic scumbag who will be brought to justice.

But please don't bring race into this.

I'm going to stop this now. We have appropriate forums to debate the killings in Stanton Heights. This is not it.

Unless there is some sort connection to the Penguins, please do not discuss the subject here.

Thank you.

Seth,

Sorry about that.

I have a question though...who do you think we match up with the best in the playoffs?

Thanks

Bettman and his cronies are certainly hoping the Pens finish seventh so he can get his Pens/Caps matchup in the first round. Nice to know we're guaranteed not to have to face Boston...

You have to think that a Pens/Devils matchup would be the most ideal. The Devils are falling apart, have had limited playoff success in recent years, and are not a particularly young team.

I think the Pens/Caps series would be the most exciting, but not the most favorable.

Looks like we can clinch the 6th seed with a win or Montreal loss on Thursday.  Or with an OTL and a Montreal OTL.  An OTL alone will not clinch since if we tie at the end of the season, we will be tied in wins and Montreal has the tie breaker having won all 3 games against the Pens this year with one to play.

Does that sound right?

New Jersey still has Brodeur, no matter how poorly he played the last time the Pens faced him.

Anybody else scared of Carolina in the postseason?

Count me as one hoping to face the Devils in the first round.

For that to happen:

Caps magic number to finish as #2 seed: 1 (2 games left)

Philly's magic number to finish ahead of Pens: 3 (3 games left)

Canes magic number to finish ahead of Pens: 3 (2 games left)

I think its looking pretty good.

I'm hoping the Pens don't face the Whalers in the first round.  Carolina is playing some scary good hockey right now.  Plus, I have secured Whaler tickets for the first 3 rounds.  So ideally, the Pens would play Carolina in round 3 (ideally for me, that is).

NC Dave,  Not going all four rounds.  A pens/Canes Series will be great.  Have to admit going for the canes on that one.  I want to see a third stanley cup series here in Raleigh.

(though boston is going to be tough if the Canes meet them).

SOrry, I have to go with where my money is being spent in a Pens/Canes Series.
