Red Wings-Ducks preview - 4-30-09

2) Red Wings vs. (8) Ducks

Red Wings Leading Playoff Scorer: Johan Franzen, six points (two goals, four assists).

Ducks Leading Playoff Scorer: Ryan Getzlaf, eight points (two goals, six assists).

Red Wings Statistics

Ducks Statistics

Red Wings with Stanley Cup bling: Chris Chelios (3), Dan Cleary, Pavel Datsyuk (2), Kris Draper (4), Valtteri Filppula, Johan Franzen, Darren Helm, Tomas Holmstrom (4), Jiri Hudler, Tomas Kopecky, Nicklas Kronwall, Brett Lebda, Nicklas Lidstrom (4), Andreas Lilja, Kirk Maltby (4), Chris Osgood (3), Brian Rafalski (3), Mikael Samuelsson, Brad Stuart, Henrik Zetterberg (right).

Ducks with Stanley Cup bling: Francois Beauchemin, Ryan Carter, Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Bret Hedican, Ryan Getzlaf, Todd Marchant, Drew Miller, Rob Niedermayer, Scott Niedermayer (4), George Parros, Corey Perry, Chris Pronger, Teemu Selanne.

Something worthwhile about the Red Wings: In the past two postseasons combined, Johan Franzen has 24 points (15 goals, nine assists) in 20 games.

Something worthwhile about the Ducks: Along with Washington's Simeon Varlamov, Anaheim's Jonas Hiller (right) leads the playoffs with two shutouts.

Something useless about the Red Wings that is vaguely connected to the Penguins: Former Penguins forward Andy Bathgate holds the franchise record for most power-play goals in a single playoff series. He had five in six games in 1966 against the rival Blackhawks.

Something useless about the Ducks that is vaguely connected to the Penguins: With four assists in six playoff games, Ryan Whitney is one of six former Penguins defensemen to have scored a playoff point for Anaheim. The others are Dmitri Mironov (11 points), J.J. Daigneault (nine points), Rick Jackman (2), Fredrik Olausson (2) and Dan Trebil (1).

Former Penguins on the Red Wings: Ty Conklin, G; Marian Hossa, RW; Mikael Samuelsson, RW.

Former Penguins on the Ducks: Randy Carlyle, head coach; Erik Christensen, C; Ryan Whitney, D.

Who needs to be the difference for the Red Wings: Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen, Marian Hossa. The Red Wings were able to overwhelm the hapless Blue Jackets in the first round due to superior skill and experience. They don't have any sort of experience edge on the Ducks who won the Stanley Cup two years ago. Detroit's depth at forward will need to overwhelm the Ducks' substantial depth on defense to claim a win.

Who needs to be the difference for the Ducks: Hiller. The Ducks were able to beat the top-seeded Sharks despite being outshot 230-156 in the first-round series. Most of that was due to Hiller who replaced Jean-Sebastien Giguere, a former Conn Smythe Trophy winner, as the full-time goaltender for the playoffs. He'll need to stay hot in order for the Ducks to score another upset.

Best Red Wings YouTube Video We Could Find: Steve Yzerman doing whatever he can to support the American auto industry in arguably the sweetest jacket ever:

Best Ducks YouTube Video We Could Find: This pretty nifty backhanded goal by current Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, then a member of the Mighty Ducks:

EN Prediction: Red Wings 4-3. While the Ducks showed a lot of guts in knocking off the top-seeded Sharks, trying to eliminate the playoff-proven Red Wings is a whole other ball of wax. Unlike the Sharks, the Red Wings know what it takes to succeed in the playoffs. But they also know what it's like to lose to the Ducks, which they did in the 2007 Western Conference final. Anaheim has the depth on defense and the right amount of physical play to combat Detroit's skill. This will be the most even series in the second round, but we see Detroit having an edge.

Canucks-Blackhawks preview - 4-30-09

Note: We will be previewing the second-round series in the Western Conference today. The Detroit-Anaheim preview will appear at approximately noon. Our Eastern Conference previews will be available tomorrow.

(3) Canucks vs. (4) Blackhawks

Canucks Leading Playoff Scorer: Daniel Sedin, five points (two goals, three assists).

Blackhawks Leading Playoff Scorer: Kris Versteeg, seven points (two goals, five assists).

Canucks Statistics

Blackhawks Statistics

Canucks with Stanley Cup bling: None.

Blackhawks with Stanley Cup bling: Nikolai Khabibulin, Andrew Ladd, Sammy Pahlsson.

Something worthwhile about the Canucks: At a success rate of 52.6 percent, the Canucks have the best faceoff-winning percentage in the Western Conference playoffs.

Something worthwhile about the Blackhawks: Chicago has the second-best power-play in the playoffs after Detroit at 29.2 percent.

Something useless about the Canucks that is vaguely connected to the Penguins: The first three players of the Canucks' 1990 draft class, Petr Nedved, Shawn Antoski and Jiri Slegr, all played for the Penguins at one time or another.

Something useless about the Blackhawks that is vaguely connected to the Penguins: Former Penguins forward Troy Murray (1986) is one of two players to have won the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the Blackhawks. The other is Dirk Graham (1991).

Former Penguins on the Canucks: None.

Former Penguins on the Blackhawks: Marc Bergevin, assistant coach; Scotty Bowman, senior advisor, hockey operations; Dale Tallon, general manager.

Who needs to be the difference for the Canucks: Roberto Luongo (right, above). This team goes as far as he goes. Even though the Canucks, swept the Blues in the first round, three of the games were air-tight, one-goal wins. The Canucks beat the Blues because they had the better goaltender. Luongo will have to better than Nikolai Khabibulin (right) in order for Vancouver to win this series.

Who needs to be the difference for the Blackhawks: Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Adam Burish, Samuel Pahlsson. The Blackhawks were able to deal with the physical Flames with some grit of their own. They'll need to get physical with the somewhat brittle Canucks in order to nullify Vancouver's offense.

Best Canucks YouTube Video We Could Find: Following a perceived series of slights from the officials during a 1982 playoff series against the Blackhawks, Canucks coach Roger Nielsen began to wave a white "flag" of surrender:

Best Blackhawks YouTube Video We Could Find: Here come the Hawks. The mighty Blackhawks:

EN Prediction: Canucks 4-2. It's a little cliched, but we're firm believers in the best goaltender always giving you the best chance of winning a series. Luongo is clearly the best goaltender in this series. If Luongo can shut the door on the Blackhawks the way he did against the Blues, this is Vancouver's series.

Empty Netter Assists - 4-30-09

Playoff Stuff

Penguins

-"Yeah, he's getting old." - Hal Gill on teammate Bill Guerin.

-Dan Bylsma has Evgeni Malkin in his Hart Trophy pool.

-Who should win the Hart Trophy?

-How much should the "V" in "MVP" matter?

-Should the Penguins have waited to make Dan Bylsma the full-time head coach?

-Stephen Brunt of the Globe and Mail goes out on a limb and suggests Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin might be profiled a good bit in the second round.

-Someone over at LetsGoPens.com spotted a Sidney Crosby ornament in the 2009 Hallmark catalog:

Bruins

-Boston defenseman and former Penguin Andrew Ference is expected to be in the lineup for Game 1 against the Hurricanes Friday. He has been sidelined since April 4 due to an undisclosed injury.

-The Bruins swept the Hurricanes this season and outscored them, 18-6.

Capitals-Rangers

-Capitals owner Ted Leonsis is trying to get President Obama to a game against the Penguins.

-Is Washington forward Sergei Fedorov (right) worthy of the Hockey Hall-of-Fame? (Kudos to Illegal Curve for the find.)

-"Pittsburgh won't allow us to play the kind of game we were playing against the Rangers. We have to play very focused, especially in our own zone without turning over the puck." - Sergei Fedorov.

-Is Washington goaltender Simeon Varlamov this season's Cam Ward?

-Everyone with a vested interest in the Penguins should know this, but we'll type it because we'll freely admit it feels good to reguritate. The Capitals have lost six out of seven playoff series against the Penguins.

-Will Penguins-Capitals become the NHL's biggest playoff rivalry since the Avalanche and Red Wings in the 1990s?

-Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said the Penguins are not the same team that lost three games to Washington this season.

-If you're going to watch the Penguins-Capitals series near the Beltway, the Washington Post has Comcast SportsNet's broadcast schedule.

-The Rangers once against have a roster full of old, bloated, overpaid, underperforming talent.

-New York is facing a lot of changes this offseason.

Devils-Hurricanes

-Versus explained why it couldn't air the end of Game 7.

"However, VERSUS aired a live look-in of the Devils/Hurricanes game during the network's studio show, Hockey Central. For live look-ins, due to regulations, VERSUS cannot air more than two minutes of live game action nor can the network air the last two minutes of the game or overtime coverage. The network also extended its Hockey Central telecast to show Devils/Hurricanes highlights after they happened so that hockey fans were able to see the amazing finish to the Devils/Hurricanes game."

-Seriously, what kind of brain-dead arrangment is that? Anytime a baseball game has no-hitter going through three innings, ESPN has no issue whatsoever jumping in on the local FSN affiliate's coverage. But Versus, one of the national rights holders for the NHL, can't show the final minutes of an epic Game 7? Is it just us, or does the NHL make it almost a difficult chore to be a fan of the sport in this country?

-Hurricanes forward said his teams grueling seven-game series with New Jersey will be easy compared to what they'll have to go through in Boston.

-Unlike the Penguins with Dan Bylsma, the Hurricanes have yet to remove the "interim" from head coach Paul Maurice's title.

-Here are the calls of Hurricanes radio play-by-play guy Chuck Kaiton for the final goals in Game 7. Kaiton is the Hurricanes'/Whalers' version of Mike Lange.

-After only scoring one goal in 25 regular season games with Carolina, forward Jussi Jokinen (right) scored two huge goals in the first round.

-Did the collapse of New Jersey's Martin Brodeur in Game 7 put doubt in his status as the best goaltender of all time?

-A day later, Devils overlord Lou Lamoriello was still stunned by his team's defeat in Game 7.

-Lamoriello expects coach Brent Sutter to return next season. Sutter, a native of Alberta, has admitted to having feelings of home sickness.

-There was some good new out of the Devils' loss. They had their highest television ratings in 12 years.

-New Jersey has quite a few key unrestricted free agents to worry about this season.

Red Wings-Ducks

-Since 2003, no franchise has won more playoff series than the Ducks.

-Anaheim forward Corey Perry (right) isn't a fan of long layoffs between series.

-The Ducks need to be disciplined in order to beat the Red Wings.

-With the prospect of facing a physical Anaheim team, should the Red Wings recall a tough guy like Aaron Downey or Darren McCarty from their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids?

-Anaheim defenseman James Wisniewski will be playing his hometown team.

Canucks-Blackhawks

-The last time the Blackhawks and Canucks hooked up, things got nasty.

-Chicago isn't exactly happy about having its games on Versus.

-With Rockford, their AHL affiliate, eliminated from the postseason, the Blackhawks recalled forwards Bryan Bickell, Evan Brophey, Jacob Dowell, Pascal Pelletier, defenseman Jordan Hendry and goaltenders Corey Crawford and Antti Niemi.

-The Canucks will have their hands full with Chicago's defensemen.

-"I’m 26 and I feel like an old guy." Blackhawks forward Adam Burish on his young teammates.

-"I will be running a lot of their players." Vancouver forward Darcy Hordichuk not exactly mincing words on how he'll play Chicago.

-In order to move on to the Western Conference final, Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook (right) will have to defeat his hometown team.

-Blackhawks general manager and former Penguin Dale Tallon is making a return to where his NHL career began.

-Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo is sick of being asked if he has had too much time off.

Adams Division

-Here are your officials for the second round.

Calder Cup Playoffs

-Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland has seen both sides of his team's rivalry with the Hershey Bears.

IIHF World Championships

-An overtime goal by Blue Jackets forward Kristian Huselius gave Sweden a 6-5 win against the United States. Former Penguins defenseman Dick Tarnstrom recorded an assist for Sweden.

-Former Stars forward Niko Kapanen had two goals and two assists and led Finland to a 4-3 defeat of the Czech Republic.

-Edgars Masalskis made 21 saves and led Latvia to a 2-0 shutout of Austria.

-Tore Vikingstad, who might have the coolest name ever, had a goal and an assist for Norway which edged Denmark, 5-4, in overtime.

-Check out this insane but legal hit Denmark's Nichlas Hardt stuck on Norway's Erik Lars Lund:

-Stars forward and Canadian forward James Neal suffered an eye injury.

-Thrahsers and Swedish defenseman Tobias Enstrom needed surgery to repair some facial injuries suffered following a hit from behind into the boards.

Non-Playoff Stuff

Northwest Division

-Flames coach Mike Keenan expects to be back next season.

-Calgary forward Mike Cammalleri seems to be the only guy who thinks the Flames can re-sign him.

-If you're a fan of the Norris Trophy, this is your series.

Pacific Division

-The Coyotes denied a report that the NHL has taken over the franchise's operations.

-Sharks general manager Doug Wilson apologized to his fans for another quick playoff exit.

Patrick Division

-Leave it to White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen to be a proponent of fighting in hockey.

Overtime on Saturday? - 4-27-09

At least NBC is being up front with its contempt for the NHL this week. Due to the Kentucky Derby broadcast which is due to start at 4 p.m., should Game 1 of the Penguins-Capitals series go beyond one overtime, the game will be dumped off on Versus outside of the Pittsburgh and Washington markets.

EN Says: This "partnership" can't end soon enough with NBC.

(Kudos to Kuklas Korner for the heads up.)

Malkin, Ovechkin, Datsyuk named finalists for Hart Trophy - 4-29-09

Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was officially named as a finalist for the Hart Trophy. He was named along with Detroit forward Pavel Datsyuk and Washington forward Alex Ovechkin.

Malkin led the NHL with 113 points (35 goals, 78 assists) this season. It was the first time he claimed the Art Ross Trophy in his career.

Ovechkin won the Hart Trophy last season.

Datsyuk is a nominee for the Selke Trophy as the league's top defensive forward and the Lady Byng Trophy as the league's most gentlemanly player.

As pointed out on NHL Live, Don Cherry must be sick seeing three Russians nominated for the award.

Capitals-Rangers

-Fedorov's game-winning goal and the handshake line:

-For a team with all sorts of youth, it was Fedorov, the oldest player on the roster, who came through when it mattered the most.

-Is this Fedorov's last chance at another Stanley Cup title?

-Did Varlamov save the Capitals' postseason?

-Varlamov got a fine birthday present a day after turning 21.

-Washington captain Chris Clark played his first playoff games since Game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup final. He was a member of the Flames who lost to the Lightning.

-"My ears are still ringing. It was like a rock concert. I just couldn't believe how loud it was." - Clark on the noice in Verizon Center last night.

-Check out this hit Washington's Alex Ovechkin stuck on New York's Sean Avery:

New Jersey forward and captain Jamie Langenbrunner underwent arthoscoptic knee surgery April 18.

Sharks-Ducks

-Anaheim forward Teemu Selanne compared teammate Bobby Ryan to Mario Lemieux. Uh... not quite.

-"Now I think we play what is the best team in the league, in Detroit." Ducks defenseman and former Penguin Ryan Whitney.

-After another early playoff exit, which was possibly the worst in franchise history, what direction do the Sharks take?

-Sharks president Greg Jamison said general manager Doug Wilson's job is safe.

-Are San Jose forwards Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton (right) really leaders?

Red Wings

-Detroit isn't afraid of the big bad Ducks.

-Are the Red Wings and Ducks rivals?

Canucks

-The Canucks are Canada's last hope.

-Vancouver's Sedin twins are more than familiar with Chicago forward Samuel Pahlsson.

-The Canucks probably could have not asked for a better match up in the second round than with Chicago.

Blackhawks-Flames

-The Blackhawks aren't satisfied with simply winning a playoff round or two.

-Rocky Wirtz and John McDonough have transformed the Blackhawks.

-"I didn't do enough." - Calgary captain Jarome Iginla taking the blame for his teams' 4-2 series loss.

Kind of interesting NBC would start the broadcast Saturday at 1 p.m. with their Kentucky Derby coverage starting at 4 p.m. If there's overtime or some sort of delay, that cuts things awfully close. After the Senators-Sabres fiasco with the Preakness Stakes from a few seasons ago, you would think the NHL and NBC would do whatever it takes to avoid that mistake.
