Empty Netter Assists - 3-17-09

Penguins

-What are the Penguins' long-term plans with Sergei Gonchar?

-Why does everyone "hate" Sidney Crosby?

-Shelly Anderson chatted with some of yinz yesterday. Here's the transcript.

-Does Eric Godard have any purpose with the Penguins any longer?

-Miroslav Satan made his debut with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and recorded a goal and three assists in a 7-2 rout of the Albany River Rats. Andy Wozniewski added two goals for the Penguins while Jeff Taffe had a goal and two assists. With two assists, Janne Pesonen set Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's single season record for points with 68. Toby Petersen (67 in 2000-01) previously held the record.

-Satan was pretty dominant.

-EN reader Timothy McCollim spotted this XFLish jersey foul this past weekend:

Atlantic Division

-Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur will attempt to set an NHL record tonight with his 552nd career win.

-NHL Network will pick up tonight's Blackhawks-Devils game. No word on how this will affect Center Ice or Game Center packages.

-The NHL and Madison Square Garden are still battling over control of the Rangers' Web site.

-Does Islanders defenseman Mark Streit merit consideration for the Norris Trophy?

Northeast Division

-Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller (right) has resumed skating for the first time since suffering a high-ankle sprain nearly a month ago.

-Even if they're the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Bruins have a weak 6-10-3 record over their past 19 games.

Southeast Division

-The Lightning demoted former Penguins defenseman Josef Melichar to Norfolk of the AHL.

-The Hurricanes demoted forward Branton Sutter to Albany of the AHL.

-Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau was not pleased with his team's effort last night.

-Panthers defenseman Bryan McCabe is expected to return to the lineup tonight after missing three games due to an eye injury.

-Apparently God has Washington forward Alex Ovechkin in his/her fantasy league.

Central Division

-Joel Ward had a goal and an assist for the Predators who won at Los Angeles, 4-3. Michal Handzus led the Kings with a goal and an assist.

-The win moved Nashville into seventh place in the Western Conference.

-The Blues wouldn't be in playoff contention without goaltender Chris Mason.

-Assuming he plays tonight, forward Kris Draper (right) will appear in his 1,000th game as a Red Wing. Only Alex Delvecchio, Gordie Howe, Nicklas Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman have reached that mark with Detroit.

-General manager Scott Howson deserves a lot of credit for fixing the Blue Jackets.

-Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp has resumed practicing. A knee injury has sidelined him since Feb. 14.

-Forward Samuel Pahlsson is expected to make his debut with Chicago Wednesday. Acquired from Anaheim at the trade deadline, he has been out of the lineup due to Mononucleosis.

Northwest Division

-Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo cares not for questions about soft goals.

-Wild defenseman Kurtis Foster's come back from a broken femur has not gone that smoothly.

-Stop us if this sounds familiar. The Wild is having trouble clearing traffic from its own net.

-Forward Darcy Tucker's first season in Colorado has not gone smoothly.

Pacific Division

-Ducks forward Teemu Selanne (right) guaranteed his team will make the playoffs.

-After dealing mainstays Travis Moen and Samuel Pahlsson at the trade deadline, the Ducks are trying to reassemble their checking line.

-Coyotes goon Brian McGrattan is ready to return to the NHL after spending time in the league's and the NHLPA's substance abuse program.

Patrick Division

-Christian Hanson, the son of Dave Hanson of "Slap Shot" fame, is starring for Notre Dame.

(Kudos to Illegal Curve for the find.)
